Anthony Spencer Signs With Saints

Never thought he was all that special. Wasted draft pick, IMO.

The dude never lived up to his first round draft pedigree.............had basically one really good season, got franchised, blew his knee out and was never the same.

That about sums up his time in Dallas.

Tough crowd when a probowl player like Anthony Spencer doesn't live up to his draft stock. What he didn't live up to was fans' unrealistic expectations.

Here's the list from that (good) 2007 first round, by the way. We could have done a lot worse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_NFL_draft

I'm one of those tough crowds. The reason why is, the FO is finally getting rid of high money players that Jerry paid...8.2 million for nothing worth that kind of money. Franchise him? Come on, now! I know that it is not Spencers fault that he got that kind of money. But getting rid of players that have already been payed makes room for young players that want some of that, too! lol

The moral of the story is...the names are changing, but not the game.

I thought Spencer was a pretty good player before the injury. Not elite, but pretty good. After the injury, he didn't look much different than any of the other guys we had playing defensive end. That is not a good thing, considering we were average at best at this position. I'm looking forward to seeing new blood battle for the job, now that the waiting for Spencer to regain form game is over.

Oh, it's time to walk away from Spencer. It's the right call. And the franchise tag was a disaster in retrospect.

Over the course of AS's career, though, he was a good player for us. By no means a waste of a first round pick. When you look at the rate that first rounds bust, and see that we got a full 8 years out of our guy, that's a win for that pick. Spencer's biggest problem was that the team was excited about him and his play never matched the expectation from some of the fans. He wasn't Demarcus Ware. He was just a good run stopper who held up to his responsibilities and gave you a little bit of pressure from that strong side.

Can't say as I'm especially upset to see him go -- candidly, it's much closer to the opposite.

While there's no denying he had his moments in the sun, he obviously wasn't exactly elite.

Too bad for him that we tend to expect excellence of 1st round picks. That's just how it is.

This revisionist history is silly.

His sack total went up in 2012 but so did his pass rushing attempts. Its been demonstrated statistically that his pass rushing efficiency remained constant to the previous several years. This was all hashed out back then and it bears out to reason because 2012 was when Ware started getting hurt all the time.

He was an excellent press LB and pancaked TE and RB routinely and was by far the best pursuit, tackling, and poa defender we had on the roster.

He got hurt and outside of that and handwaving at decent sack totals I don't see much to criticize him for.

After all the time we ran a 3-4 people never realized that you dont typically rush both LBs at the same time and when one of those LBs is Demarcus Ware your rush attempts are going to be limited

We got 8 years out of him but he was only great for 2 of those 8.

Spence was a decent player, not bad and not great, serviceable.... It's time to move on and let Marinelli stock the defense with young players that he thinks will make the defense stout.

Yeah. I'm good.

Unfair comparisons as he played opposite Ware much like Banks played opposite LT, but Spencer was always solid for us and a stud vs the run at OLB.

He will help NO more at OLB than he would help us at DE, though he was still a solid player for us last year.
Good luck, and good health Spencer. You played hard for the Cowboys.

The last of the Goodfellas on the Defense... Ware, Spencer, James, Newman... All good but no attitude..

Most first rounders aren't great at all, though. He was a good pick at that spot in the draft, and under appreciated by fans who were looking for another Demarcus Ware.

Greg Ellis II. We fans had higher expectations than what tjey produced for where they were drafted. If those two were drafted in Chris Canty's spot we would look at them totally differently(sp?). We could have done worse with the pick and gotten a Bobby Carpenter type player, or a Moe Claiborn.

Greg Ellis was a much better pass rusher though unless I'm totally misremembering.

What's up with all these teams signing our defensive players?

These other teams are trying to get any little piece of our 2014 magic that they can. Too bad for them we didn't have many offensive players as free agents. The few that were, were snatched up relatively quickly (D. Harris, Murray, Parnell... am I missing anyone?). I'm glad we resigned Beasely when we did, he would have been a relatively hot commodity in the open market.

I'm half joking, but maybe there actually is some truth to this.

oh noes, Spencer didnt live up to my expectations, nor that of the NFL. get over it, just beacuse he was a Cowboy doesnt mean he was the end all be all. It was a bad pick, it was bad before it was announced, it was worse when it was announced and it was terrible when it became reality. Thats it end of story. Bad pick. Not just for where he was picked, just a bad pick. Period, the end.
