Are we fooling ourselves hitching our wagon to Tony Romo?

I can't believe that no one on this board is keen on CFL All-Star QB Ricky Ray, at least as our backup. This may not be able to happen, though, as I believe he's under contract to the Edmonton Eskimos until 2008. Perhaps we could bring in Maddox until Ricky Ray is freed up for 2008. Thoughts?

i can't believe it took you this long to ensure your pet-boy-toy got mentioned when the rest of the free world knows bringing in someone like ricky ray is just foolish.

You've heard our thoughts on this.

He couldn't beat out Quincy Carter in New York with the Jets.

We didn't and don't buy your spin control on this. Guy is an NFL bust. Let him stay in Canada.
We'll simply have to disagree on this. Have you, by chance, seen him play? No spin control by me, the guy can play. For the record, the dreadful Carter was handed his spot on the Jets, he never competed with a soul. Herm Edwards just installed him as the backup to Pennington due to his "vast" (yet awful) NFL playing experience.

Ricky Ray's got talent, folks - hate to break it to you. He can't get out of his CFL contract currently, and who would want to - Canadian icon as he is? but once he does, prepare for a revolution at the QB position, heck...the way the whole league thinks about QB prospecting will change.

Just remember philo's name when that happens.

Yes, I have seen him play.

No, I don't buy the Carter was handed anything nonsense.

At one time I was intrigued by him. That was 2 and a half years ago when he first dreamed of playing in the NFL.

I have seen him since he bombed out of the NFL as I do on occasion watch the CFL. I think he has too many bad habits ot ever do squat at this level. He throws too many interceptions in the CFL to ever give credence to him in the NFL.

And like I said, he couldn't beat out Quincy Carter. That told me all I needed to know.

Foolish? I don't think you know this subject very well, to be honest. Ray can play.

Carter was brought to the Jets late and handed the job. The first year Ray returned to Canada he won the grey Cup again. Since then the Eskimos have had RB, DB & especially OL problems aplenty that have hurt Ray. They've shored up a lot of things this off season. Keep an eye out for Ray this year, I think you'll like what you see. I say he has potential, just my opinion of course. Ray is only 27 years old, by the way.

No one in the NFL gets handed a job. If Ray was good enough the entire Jets offensive staff and players would have been squawking that he wasn't in ther einstead of Q.

I don't buy this spin control. Finding new ways to try and convince me are a waste of your time and mine.

I will watch him. As I said, I do pay attention to the CFL. I doubt he shows me anything this year that I haven't seen the last 2.

I can name 20 QBs I'd rather go with over him and most are college.

I realize that this post wsa more of an effort to troll more than anything else and in an effort to rebutt it i started thinking of QBs that had a similar experience to Romo's and how their careers went.

Basically what i was looking for was a QB that sat at first and then came on like gangbusters their first season and how they fared.

All i did was review the list of QBs on ESPN.com and looked to see who fit the criteria so dont shoot me if i left anyone else out. Here is who i came up with:

Tom Brady
Marc Bulger
Dante Culpepper
Jake Delhomme
Brett Favre
Matt Hasselbeck
JP Losman
Phillip Rivers
Kurt Warner

It really is a mixed bag. Is Romo a Brady or a Favre or is he a Culpepper or a Warner?

Of that list Rivers, Losman, and Culpepper all had pedigree but the other guys all were low draft picks or undrafted.

But the one thing that has to sit well is that despite his 'fade' at the end of the season Romo still put up a 95 QB rating. Even if he slides 10 points he still would be darn good and that is even before you consider how the defensive collapse may have affected him.

There is also the idea that players that are only 26 years old tend to get better at the QB position with experience and not worse

I think you guys are misunderstanding phildo's point...

Checking out the NFL stats for Ricky Ray, you may or may not find out that maybe, just maybe he can play in the NFL. He has before, so his experience will help him if he comes back...

Check out his NFL stats...

or maybe not...

Who here thinks that we could possibly be kidding ourselves by hitching our wagon to one undrafted T Romo as our franchise QB for years to come? Don't get me wrong fellas, I was pleasantly surprised in what I saw in TR last season (although he seemed to fade a bit down the stretch). Have we seen the high tide of TR's career already? Just wondering if this is a chancy proposition and if we would be better served moving up in the draft and picking more of a sure thing. These Cinderalla stories don't happen too often. Will TR really be the exception to the rule? I guess it boils down to: is he really something special or just fool's gold.
Let's get some objective, thoughtful opinions going on this very important topic, before we sign this guy to a huge long term extension.
Looking forward to hearing from all.

I, for one, think we should think twice about hitching our fortunes to Romo. But I live in Farmers Branch where we pride ourseleves on being idiots. :lmao2:

Er, no, it was a legitimate question. You just don't like the person posing it. Some of us would like to see a little more from Tony before turning him into a multi-millionaire. Would you buy an expensive car without test driving it first?
