I believe you can cut him tomorrow and designate him a June 1 cut. If you cut him and don't designate him June 1, we save $5MM in cap space. If we cut him and designate him a June 1 cut, you can split the cap hit over the next two years, which means we would create like $8-9MM in cap space this year. However, that cap space can't be used until AFTER June 1.

So if you look at it like "we don't value a 4th-7th rounder as worth more than 5 mil" in their eyes it's the correct decision. Not saying I agree but doesn't releasing before June 1 free up a ton of cap room next year?

Some people are under an illusion that teams are tripping over themselves to throw away draft picks for a 37-year-old broken QB.

he has a value. They're waiting to see if Jerry is stupid enough to just release him

The book is out on Dallas and Jerry. Dallas is limited in cap space so they need whatever space they can get. Jerry will not screw over a player of Romo's stature and history of the team. People thinking Dallas would hold on to Romo until some needy team came knocking were fooling themselves. Jerry doesn't do that. He's going to give Romo a chance to get a good deal.
And it's a big part of the reason you get people like La'el Collins to sign here. Jerry does his level best to keep his word with the players. Did we get La'el because of things like this? I think it's a fair question if we are going to roast Jones for letting Romo have some say in this matter.

I totally understand what youre saying. And it all goes back to Jerry trying to please tony. Im sure theres offers on the table. Just not from the teams tony wants. I hate the fact jerry is putting romo over the cowboys organization.

What type of offer do you think he's getting for him though? BRonco's and Texans need him and they aren't offering anything for him.

Good Lord people, we can't trade Tony because no team is willing to pick up his current contract. They're just going to wait until he's released and then negotiate their own contract with him.
Mike Glennon just got 15m for 3 years

Romo is not getting less than that

Why people keep saying this is beyond me. I mean it's been explained a billion times how this isn't a good excuse.

I think they got Collins because they offered more. Could be wrong but he was given a pretty solid deal, IIRC.

Oh goodie. 2018 cap gets destroyed too. At least he played 2 years ago. By the time he is finally off the books we will have absorbed the largest cap hit in the history of the NFL for a guy that has hardly played for us. And we receive nothing in return while the team that gets him does so for nothing.

Except you save $5MM if you trade or cut him. It's the same cap hit. The only difference in cap hit is if you make him a June 1 cut.

And yes, if you take the full hit this year, I believe you are out from under him in future years.

I would have liked a trade, but its not surprising. I think this gives Cowboys ability to spread cap hit over 2 years though?
