That's a bit extreme. There are millions of cars on the road every day. Are there millions of fender benders, hit-and-runs, vehicular homicides, etc., each day? Of course not.
Firearms aren't toys. Neither are automobiles. If there are individuals who intentionally misuse either of the two and someone gets hurt because of it, punishment is justified.
Punishments are defined by law. The law stipulates that Burress should be incarcerated. His attorney(s) have attempted to bend the legal ramifications facing him in his favor.
Sounds like he's treating the legal system in the exact same way as he treated his gun--in other words, carelessly. It's hard to feel sympathic for someone who has done wrong and then proceeds to thumb his nose at the harshest punishment recommended by law.
That's idiocy personified. He can share that 'worldly' mindset with his own self in my opinion.
