Breaking down the College Football Playoffs

WOW TCU.

Dropped from 3 to 6?

YIKES!!!

Like they said last week.
It was really 3a, 3b, 3c, 3d....with a paper thin difference with 3a having the benefit of already playing all the best teams on their schedule, while the other 3 still have tough completion left to boost the past 3a.
If TCU had not yet beaten K State, for example, the for sure would have not been 3a.

It's not like the polls of the old days. The entire body of work is not complete until the season is complete. It changes weekly.

The thing I hate about the whole process is how back-heavy it is. Human being are going to naturally be biased towards the games that they saw most recently.

If you took the exact same teams and the exact same opponents and the exact same results but simply shuffled up the order in which the games were played, you would have a different Final-4.

I think the Committee got it right based on what they said would matter before the season started.

I still say going forward they need to make some changes.

1. More teams make the playoffs. My preference is 16 teams.
2. Conference Championship for all 5 Power 5 Conferences.
3. Committee handles out of conference schedule for 2 games (1 home 1 away) against other Power 5 schools.
4. Get rid of rankings altogether

Oh by the way, I crunched the numbers and going into yesterday, the BCS top 2 would have been Alabama and Florida State (they were the top-2 in the Coaches and Computer polls, so even though we don't know what the Harris Poll would have said, there is no way it would have overrules the other 67%). I haven't done the numbers after yesterday (since not all the polls are available) but I don't see any way it would have changes since everybody won.

That is because making the playoffs is based on rankings which means it is biased and subjective. They need to get rid of the rankings.

I have to wonder what others have said: If you changed the team names from TCU and Baylor to Texas and Oklahoma...hmmm.

OK. So then how do you do it? Give it all to computers?

As I mentioned just a few posts above yours.

Edit: Forgot to add you get in the playoffs by winning your conference.

Texas and Oklahoma played more respected non-conference games than TCU and Baylor, so yes it would make a difference if those teams were in the mix. It still may not have been enough to get them into the playoffs this year had they put up similar records.

Well you still haven't really said how the rest of the 16-team bracket gets filled out once the conference champions are decided....

my advice to all teams going forward, screw sportsmanship, win every game you can by 70 points.

Yep. Not sure. Could easily be the top 2 teams per conference and then the best teams from the rest of the pool.
