Sorry. I misread.

A guy that starts 4 or 5 games and is in a nickle/dime package, has 35 tackles and 7 passes defended is not an awful identification of talent in the 5th round. The Cowboys deciding to keep only 3 corners was one of the strangest personnel moves I've seen in a while when 5 is the norm.

Wouldn't disagree with that one bit.

And if you want to say that the 'mistake' was not in drafting Thomas (though Sherman was obviously the better choice), but cutting him, I would not have a huge argument.

But no matter how you want to slice it, our favorite team screwed up.

And I wouldn't blame you, it was when the conversation started with 'sigh' that it went downhill for me.

I enjoy good debate, but can do without a condescending attitude.

How was Sherman obviously the better choice? The guy was a WR up until his JR year at Stanford.

Broaddus didn't answer the question posed to him in terms of his strength. That is the answer that I am interested in. Gross characterizations don't do much for me.

Its not a lack of effort or desire to do his job...its just he hasnt developed as a player...there were times on film in college playing left tackle against schools like Kansas State getting the job done...his movement and strength were good...he finished blocks and played at times even after the whistle...there was some nastiness to his game...but now he plays too high and he can't sit down on rushers...he doesnt play with leverage...can gets put in terrible positions as a blocker...he is just not powerful enough to handle rushers one-on-one...they have appeared to miss....and I missed right along with them...it sucks.

Are you saying that you can see from the practices without pads that he is not strong enough or is your opinion all based on last year's training camp?

proscout;5092374 said:
He hasn't been strong enough with or without pads. Don't let the without pads fool you...the one thing you can see is strength...you physically have to get in front of the man and slow him down...he doesn't do that...he gets compressed at times....it happens on tape....I see it with my own eyes...he just isn't powerful enough to hold blocks...I don't know how I can explain it any more...

Ok, thanks. I couldn't determine from your initial post if you were referring to now or last year.

What more did you want to know? Like he said, it isn't that complicated.

This is a large thread for a small school project.

For me, it wouldn't mean as much if he weren't a 4th round pick and looking like yet another miss at a position group where we have notoriously struggled.

Yes, a lot of us bemoaned the decision to release Thomas only to later add really bad washed up CBs from another team who was useless and out of the leauge (?Frank Walker).

He had showed some ability in preseason and had good measurables. That should be enough to get on the team when you only have 3 NFL CBs on the roster (TNew, Jenkins, OScan).

If I remember correctly part of the problem was that one or two of them got injured early and they felt they needed some experience back there. But that was only for a couple of games and instead we kept a player who may have been marginally better at the start of the season but was near the end of his career.

This was a bad roster move and the blame goes on Jerry Jones for making yet another bad roster decision.

Most 4th rounders don't pan out no matter the position group. I mean there isn't much more to say than that. And we have notoriously struggled since the line all fell apart at once some 5 years or so ago. It takes time to rebuild that line.

I like the investments we've made over the last 3 years into fixing the problem and I like the competition we have going with some guys who still have tread on their tires.

I have no idea however why so much talk would be had on a small school 4th round project a few years in and before we see the guy in pads.

The Cowboys scouts seemed to have whiffed on evaluating this player. You don't use a 4th round pick on a guy who isn't expected to play at all until his third year or later unless that guy can be something special one he actually sees the field. That is reserved for UDFAs.

Offensive linemen are different in that regard....I do understand what you are saying here but scouts think about that position in the way of a longer term than just right now....they gambled on Arkin...he just didnt develop and that is why you still see him on the roster other than a player like AOA or Jason Williams that played another position...

The answer to the question.

I thought I painted a picture for you...I said he got compressed....he doesnt handle one-on-one blocks well...he doesnt get in front of his man...does that show a lack of strength???

I know what you are talking about. In the preseason games that he started he was sometimes able to get underneath a guy and drive him a bit but all too often like you said, he would snap the ball for only a guy to trap one of his arms inside get up into his chest and ride him straight back.

Are you saying that is still happening in these half speed practices? We don't get to see the practices but from the blurbs that I do see all I see amongst the linemen is a slightly more vigorous game of pattycake. If he is still getting turned and ragdolled then why is he even still on the roster I guess is my thought?

Oh and as an aside, on the Break last week when you were talking about Ron Wolfe and how he had an advantage in watching the college game year round that the Cowboys GM doesn't. Let's just say I appreciate objective criticism like that. I thought Eatman was going to have kittens while you were saying it though.

This is the type of thing that starts us behind the eight ball every year.

It appears that Mr. Broaddus is back to enjoying a fine Saturday afternoon. I do think it is awesome that he comes on here. Much appreciation to the site and Broaddus himself.

So what does an OL getting compressed mean? Anyone know?

I would like to think that Broaddus is being stubborn but his recent takes on Costa underscore his objectivity.

That sucks but here is to the Rise of Killer!! :toast:
