As I've said, I have less problem with the way it worked out than I do that it could happen there in round one.

If there is one place you do not want confusion it is in round one, or your first choice, whereever it is. It sets the tone for the rest of the draft and how you proceed.

It just seems in recent years we have had a couple of instances where Jones has sided with a coach when making a choice on a top pick. It happened with Jason Williams, for instance. I have a hard time believing he was the best player available on that year's board.

I wonder what would have happened if they had the 13th pick. I appears that they would have drafted Richardon over Floyd despite Floyd being ranked ahead of Richardson on their board.

Almost guarantee they'd have taken OG or Richardson.

Jerry told us before the draft he'd rely heavily on Kiffin/Marinelli in the war room. Maybe that's a respect thing because these guys have more football coaching experience than Garrett or maybe it is a nod to the scouts not really have a full year with the Texas 2 Kiffin/Marilnelli scheme. Tom C has been open and honest about the scouts jobs being to find players who fit profiles the coaches provide. Hard to provide those working for someone else.

Jerry has been clear that they rank guys in groups not just in a singular order.

So if player 8 is r1 and player 6 is r1 it doesn't mean player 6 is automagically their best available guy.

We see their board but there isn't an in depth explanation of it.

Sometimes you make a bad decision that works out. I believe that happened here. Most NFL teams would prefer Floyd over Frederick plus Williams I'd GUESS... but it is INSANE to argue that Floyd over Frederick and Williams is better for the Dallas Cowboys at this point. .

Great post, but I think there is an argument to be made that it was a strategic decision rather than a bad decision. Teams consistently draft the premium positions like CB, RB, QB much higher than lineman positions. If Floyd was considered a good, not great, nose tackle when the team already had 1 or 2 starters at that position (depending on how the Josh Brent situation shakes out), you likely end up better in the long run to draft the position of need (OL) and picking up the extra pick rather than adding another NT. Especially if you think the guy won't start right away and may not be an elite talent anyway.

I don't know for sure that it was character-related issues that kept him off the board (size comes to mind more than character) but he did have two alcohol-related incidents at Florida.

I seriously think people will be impressed by his ability. I don't think his size is as big of an issue as some say. I was unaware of his alcohol related issues.

I'd certainly concede that it may have been more "smart" than lucky but it was certainly a gamble. We didn't have a ton of guys on our board so getting 3 of the top 26 was indeed somewhat lucky, IMHO. I can't logically disagree with the strategy EXCEPT versus a trade chart. Value of this draft was supposed to be rounds 3-5. Rounds 1 and 2 were mashed almost historically close to the talent of rounds 3 to 5. Just not many guys scouted out at proven elite levels.

I coach BBall and when my 2G drives to the hoop in a 3 on 1 and finishes for a bucket it is a bad decision but a great play. Odds before the bucket were the pass was a better move. Odds after the score is that 2 points is 2 points:)

We'll know how the draft turned out in a year or three. Until then, we don't know what was smart or not.

As it is right now, I'm a huge fan of all of our new rookies.

Yeah, I'm not arguing that its better to be lucky than good (though it is...) just that it was less of a gamble to pass on a NT when he had several on the team already. Time will tell if it was the right move, but I don't think the decision to trade out of 18 was nuts considering Floyd plays a non-premium position.

I've said it before, but I still don't understand why it is bad after the draft.
I think Broaddas thinks it's a bit of a pie-in-the-face for the scouts regarding Dallas passing on a player that was 5th on their board.
Other than that, I'm not really sure what harm could come of it..other than hindsite site type stuff.

I believe it benefits scouts.

Is Jerry really the mad king or are the scouts getting it wrong or is everyone really just doing a fairly solid job?

No sense hiding.

I've read the Sturm take that it is some weird counter intelligence but hogwash. Scouts, coaches, personnel guys all change teams. They take board knowledge with them. This stuff didn't link until after UDFA. How many trades occur over late round rookie choices? Fairly weak penalty if that is the criterion in the negatives,

Everyone understands what type of players teams want anyways.

Had boards been leaked before BP was hired maybe it'd be easier for guys on that scouting staff to find football jobs.

I don't understand the uproar over it either.

I don't see where it hurts the team.

And it gives the fans something interesting to talk about for a week. :D

Yep, the NFL should throw the hardcore fans a bone and release all teams draft boards after the draft.

Elam was off the board because the 49ers had a pre-draft deal with our genuis GM.

Looks like he was off the board because he was off the board, actually. What's it got to do with the 9ers deal?

My best guess is he's got him confused with Reid but then he's still confused because that has nothing to do with the board. Confusing huh.

That is what I was thinking, confusing thing. No one takes off names even when the team like the niners say we are taking Reid, because it is a constructed board already and the pick is happening simultaneously.
