I'm fine with him after a trade down, but I don't know if he's real good value at 9.

I'm fine with drafting Smith just not at 9. He hasn;t proven anything as a LT and RTs are not and never has been drafted top 10.

Dont get siucked into the whole LT v RT thing. DCoords are moving guys around too much now to find mismatches so having two guys good enough to counter that makes too much sense to me.

T. Smith is intriguing but you do need to determine IF he can play RT in the short term which will be very hard at his weight and if you want Free or Smith playing RT long term.
The savvier move is to move down a bit and take a the best RT prospect. You will pay Free enough to where he is your LT or he is gone.

supercowboy8;3886914 said:sure but he couldn't play LT at USC. Not like Kalil is a god of a LT. If Smith was a LT he would have started there and Kalil would have played RT.
SDogo;3887086 said:This debate with Smith at LT is kind of silly. Pete Carroll himself said it was a flip of a coin that decided his fate. He was lucky enough two recruit to great athletes in the same class that could play LT and there was absolutely no reason why Smith was a RT then someone simply had to be.
There is not a team in this league that is not grading Smith as a LT.

I'm not even leaning one way or the other regarding the pick. I'm still not sure how I feel about it but it's getting kind of funny watching people label him as a RT.
NeonDeion21;3887090 said:Thats why I believe he is so intriguing of a prospect. 20 years old and still has a growing body. If he would have stayed in school and played LT for one year, I think he would've been the #2 pick in the 2012 draft.

I posted this in another Smith thread.
You may want to consider the following. The 'swing' tackle this year was Barron. No one thinks he's coming back. So who is your 'swing' tackle this year? The benefit of Smith is, while starting at RT he could serve as your 'swing' also. This will allow the Boys more flexibility on game day as your backup LT is already on the field and into the flow of the game.
Smith, if he is the pick, addresses two needs. A starting RT and back up LT in case Free goes down. As of today, we do not have a backup LT which is one of the most important positions on the field.
Given Smiths age, he could project to be the long term replacement to Free. I like Free at LT. If and I say if, Smith can handle speed rushers 1 on 1 and Free can handle his man 1 on 1, the passing game will explode.
For sure the OL and DB have to be addressed. I do think Smith is the consensus top pick at OL. I think Peterson is the top CB and I'm not a fan of Prince (I can't get that Blackmon abusing out of my head) and no FS is worthy of a 1st round pick. Of the areas of need and going with the BPA, Smith would seem to marry need to talent.
Last item, the entire draft is about projections. D. Ware never played OLB prior to Dallas drafting him. Ratliff never played NT prior to being drafted. The list goes on and on, but the draft is about projecting. There are no sure things in the draft but if you can lean on talent and work ethic, I think you will be right more than wrong. By all accounts, Smith is a very good run blocker and has excellent feet (LT worthy) and very long arms. Clearly he is dedicated, he benched 29 reps with 36 inch arms - no small task. So he has talent and work ethic, so in my book he is at least worthy of all the consideration he is getting.
