Bunting - Cowboys LOVE T. Smith

I'm fine with it if they, say, traded down with Minnesota.

I'm fine with him after a trade down, but I don't know if he's real good value at 9.

Minnesota is tough to trade with because they don't have a third round pick

Best thing to do is to trade back with a team that will need a player that will be there at 9. Texans need DL and CB help and the Lions need CB help. Lions might want to trade up ahead of Houston to get Prince.
SD might want to get ahead of Houston or NE. STL needs a WR and CB. Jacksonville needs alot. All these teams have needs that might make them want to jump up. Say we trade back to 13 Detriot takes Prince. Then we trade back to 18. I think at 18 all the OTs will still be thereand we get an extra 2nd and 3rd.

11. Houston
12. Minnisota
13. Detroit
14. St. Louis
15. Miami
16. Jacksonville
17. New England - from Oakland
18. San Diego

nothing but people were syaing he is a LT so why draft a LT when you have a good one. WHy draft Smith to play RT at 9 when you can get a RT in a trade back. I'm fine with drafting Smith just not at 9. He hasn;t proven anything as a LT and RTs are not and never has been drafted top 10.

really, cos jason smith was drafted 2 overfrall and played 16 games at rt last year. Left or right just get the best OT's you can and let them play. Dont get siucked into the whole LT v RT thing. DCoords are moving guys around too much now to find mismatches so having two guys good enough to counter that makes too much sense to me.

How bout the concensus is that Barron cant play.

Barron was a much better overall prospect coming out. He was a dominant collegiate left tackle with the same athleticism which is still first rate.

Yes, we now know he has failed but that wasn't the impression coming out of FSU.

T. Smith is intriguing but risky. He is boom/bust all the way. He played RT in college and played much smaller than he needs to be be in the pros.

For whatever reason, the point you are making doesn't seem to sink in for several of the posters. And the increased use of the 34 defense today versus 10 years ago . . . .

It is very common to play young LTs on the right side for a year or two. They were drafted to play LT and eventually will or they move on because you don't spent #2 dollars on a RT.

T. Smith is intriguing but you do need to determine IF he can play RT in the short term which will be very hard at his weight and if you want Free or Smith playing RT long term.

The savvier move is to move down a bit and take a the best RT prospect. You will pay Free enough to where he is your LT or he is gone.

I see what you are saying, but the Cowboys evaluation of Smith may lead them to believe he is a genuine top 10 talent in today's draft, and if he had stayed one more year at USC he would have been a top 5 talent?

They may really think his current talent combined with upside is too good to pass up.

Then again, maybe it's all a smokescreen. But I will add that Hos said several weeks ago that the Cowboys were truly interested in Smith. Before he started moving up in all these mock drafts.

I'm not understanding the dogmatic notion of having to play him at LT right off the bat. Drafting a guy like Smith allows you develop him for a few years at RT and affords you options in terms of dealing with Doug Free. I think even you would agree that Smith is a top notch athlete with an upside better than probably any other OT in the draft.

Rigidly saying "well, we already have our LT" is sort of missing the bigger picture IMO.

If they truly "loved" him, they wouldn't let that leak out. More pre-draft smoke.

I look at it like poker. I could pretty much bet anyway I want because you can interpret it in many ways. Whether it be a a slow-play, a bluff or whatever.

Just like when it got out that they "asked for the most tape on him". This stuff is being put out so heavily and so early it almost makes you think they want you to think its a smoke-screen.

This debate with Smith at LT is kind of silly. Pete Carroll himself said it was a flip of a coin that decided his fate. He was lucky enough two recruit to great athletes in the same class that could play LT and there was absolutely no reason why Smith was a RT then someone simply had to be.

There is not a team in this league that is not grading Smith as a LT.

I'm not even leaning one way or the other regarding the pick. I'm still not sure how I feel about it but it's getting kind of funny watching people label him as a RT.

sure but he couldn't play LT at USC. Not like Kalil is a god of a LT. If Smith was a LT he would have started there and Kalil would have played RT.

You've also missed the fact that Charles Brown played LT At USC too. Smith was a junior this past season and Trojans already had seasoned and talented linemen manning the spots.

Thats why I believe he is so intriguing of a prospect. 20 years old and still has a growing body. If he would have stayed in school and played LT for one year, I think he would've been the #2 pick in the 2012 draft.

SD,

I posted this in another Smith thread.

You may want to consider the following. The 'swing' tackle this year was Barron. No one thinks he's coming back. So who is your 'swing' tackle this year? The benefit of Smith is, while starting at RT he could serve as your 'swing' also. This will allow the Boys more flexibility on game day as your backup LT is already on the field and into the flow of the game.

Smith, if he is the pick, addresses two needs. A starting RT and back up LT in case Free goes down. As of today, we do not have a backup LT which is one of the most important positions on the field.

Given Smiths age, he could project to be the long term replacement to Free. I like Free at LT. If and I say if, Smith can handle speed rushers 1 on 1 and Free can handle his man 1 on 1, the passing game will explode.

For sure the OL and DB have to be addressed. I do think Smith is the consensus top pick at OL. I think Peterson is the top CB and I'm not a fan of Prince (I can't get that Blackmon abusing out of my head) and no FS is worthy of a 1st round pick. Of the areas of need and going with the BPA, Smith would seem to marry need to talent.

Last item, the entire draft is about projections. D. Ware never played OLB prior to Dallas drafting him. Ratliff never played NT prior to being drafted. The list goes on and on, but the draft is about projecting. There are no sure things in the draft but if you can lean on talent and work ethic, I think you will be right more than wrong. By all accounts, Smith is a very good run blocker and has excellent feet (LT worthy) and very long arms. Clearly he is dedicated, he benched 29 reps with 36 inch arms - no small task. So he has talent and work ethic, so in my book he is at least worthy of all the consideration he is getting.

There is no doubt in my mind if he stayed in school he would of been a top 3 pick next year and depending on who had the 1st pick and what their QB situation was that he would of been talked about as the top pick.

My problem with the Smith pick is that I dont believe from a minute that he starts a single game this year and if he did then we would be decimated by injury. I do believe he could be that swing tackle like you suggested and I have no doubts in 2 or 3 years you put him at a tackle position and forget about it for the next 10 which is what everyone wants. I just dont know if Dallas has even a year to wait for that.

Excellent points about Ratliff and Ware.
