I don't know what to tell you and I don't know what you're watching. I see an incredibly physical corner. One of the most physical in the draft.

You're way off on this one.

I actually like the pick... I just don't see an incredibly physical player from the highlight videos I've watched. There wasn't many plays that made me go "wow that was a great hit". You're probably gonna disagree because I guess we just aren't on the same page but that's what I see. I still think he'll be good, but that's just an observation I made. But what do I know... I hadn't heard of the kid until the combine.

Also just a public service announcement: Being the top guy left on Mel Kiper's board doesn't make you the best available player.

Malcom Brown is a fine draft pick ... that didn't go to a Tampa 2 system.

Those who thought Brown would be the selection have not been paying attention. There's been almost no connection between him and the Cowboys and he wasn't one of the invites to visit before the draft. The Cowboys obviously don't love the guy or consider him simply a 1-tech who they aren't going to spend a first round pick on.

Byron is a great selection and we are fortunate he fell to us.

ROD MARINELLI: did not want Malcolm Brown, or he'd be a Cowboy right now. The Cowboys have shown over and over they do not value the 1T DT as much as other positions. Why? Because they play NICKEL almost 75% of their snaps.

Jones was the right pick. I forget who said it on ESPN, but someone blurted out "it's all in front of him for this kid. all of it". I'm pleased with Day 1.

The Cowboys don't play much Tampa 2, if any. They mainly play Cover 3 as a base, and run variations off that. Either way, I would rather have Jones.

That's true. The front 4 is a Tampa 2(speed 4-3 obviously) front tho which is where it effects Brown.

Marinelli wants 3 light guys to rush the passer and one junk yard dog to hold up play and eat blocks. He doesn't want high picks in that holding position and they didn't grade Brown as a 3T here.

Doesn't mean they are right but it is very clear what they think. They like lighter, faster DL and will draft those types in that 280 range.
Rod M loves Hayden and someone clearly loves Brent. They've also got some developmental guys behind them.

Anyone who has been int he draft zone knew all this because it has been discussed every dang day for a month or so.

It's pretty obvious this is a make up pick for Claiborne, but I'm not writing him off purely because of that. Seems like more of a fit for what the Cowboys are looking for than Carr or Bustborne. That being a lot of face to the ball. He looks stiff trying to back pedal.

So did Richard Sherman, Z. That's why he fell to the 5th. If we got 85% of Sherman in Jones, I'd take it all day long.

sherman is 6'4 though and plays more physical than Jones. i hope the McCourty comparisons sticks.

This should help you...from Sturm -- he is impressed by his physicalness. In fact, according to the rest of his assessment (in the article) on his negatives, he's TOO physical at the point of attack and will draw flags until he learns some technique. He also is a consistent tackler.

Bob Sturm On Byron Jones...

With Jones, he checks the boxes for just about everything you like for a NFL corner in this present generation. He gets up on you in press coverage and tries to suffocate, knowing he can stay with you down the field. He is best like this where his long arms and huge hands are used to direct you on a re-route. He is right in the hip pocket not the fades and although he sees some action, he generally is able to handle what comes his way. He is also surprisingly physical for a gifted athlete (usually it is one or the other) and is willing to get dirty to make a tackle on your bubble screens or runs around the corner. His overall game is solid and he looks like he has the tools to develop into a #1 CB who is up for your best receiver and willing to travel side to side to stay with him. Absolutely best in press coverage versus the zones Connecticut would run. Nice ball skills over the top as well.

BTW, I predicted Jones to us in the mock draft contest.
He was the best of the likely guys.

High end character and good positional fit with high ceiling.
Exactly the kind of guy we have been hitting on and winning with.

If you don't trust this front office you have issues.
Garrett/McClay/Stephen are doing a fine job as draftsmen that keep Jerry from taking on knuckleheads in round 1 or making crazy trades.

I don't think this was some amazing value but I do think Dallas got lucky to get their guy.
They had KJ rated higher but with Peters likely off their board, the rumor of Jones as CB2 is believable.
Have heard scouts were split in Trae Waynes. --which likely means Dallas didn't rate him as highly as others since the rumblings came from local dudes.

I am thrilled Dallas didn't take Gregory and I was 99.99% sure they weren't taking Brown.

Exactly - they have earned the benefit of the doubt - especially in early round picks. Jones checks all the boxes, he by no means was a reach and is a solid first round pick. Also it's pretty clear Marinell doesn't value the one technique coming from the draft so Jones was the guy they really wanted.

The fact they didnt go DLine (DT) makes me think there maybe something to the Brockers rumor. A mid rounder in 16 perhaps.

OR.........
it could be they went DL high 2nd last year then signed the best DL on the free agent market in Greg Hardy this off-season.

The draft is far from over but DL wasn't as strong a need as gets suggested.

Nickel DL is likely Hardy, Crawford, Mincey and DLaw.
Base is likely Mincey, Crawford, Brent, Hardy

So a pick in the 30s last year may well be ONLY a part-time guy....
We aren't that bad off.

If they took Brown, you'd all be whining about them not paying attention to the secondary.

I'm satisfied with the pick.

you're convinced he sticks at corner? he looks stiff turning out of his breaks in the combine footage.

Where is the video of him doing drills at the combine? I've tried to find it but can't. I thought I saw it in the past.
