It's pretty obvious this is a make up pick for Claiborne, but I'm not writing him off purely because of that. Seems like more of a fit for what the Cowboys are looking for than Carr or Bustborne. That being a lot of face to the ball. He looks stiff trying to back pedal.

amongst all the stuff that gets tossed about this is probably the most annoying.

bob sturm says this stuff and it is easily the thing about him that most annoys me.

dallas needs to replace carr. he is older and expensive.
they will shortly thereafter need to replace scandrick.

so CB is simply a need REGARDLESS of Mo.

Dallas has another year of Mo and he may well retire a Cowboy for all we know.
He is here for 2015 and will become a free agent we can resign at any point this year.
We simply did not pick up an expensive option year.

If anything this pick is more closely linked ot BW Webb failing.
We are simply short of CBs even with Mo.

I think the simple question to ask is this, do you already have 3 starting level CBs. If the answer is no and you want to be a playoff team you probably need a 3rd. That's just the nature of this league right now. Carr is over paid, and I doubt will be here next year unless he takes a pay cut. Scandrick is a nice player but really is more of a CB2. The guy from NO is an upgrade or at least a lateral from Moore and Patmon has some promise, but neither of those guys is likely a starting level CB.

You not only need 3 starting CBs, you have to consider two of them are basically giving you the finger right now.
Scandrick is essentially holding out and Carr is refusing a pay cut.

Bruce Jones will make 1.4 on the cap in 2015. Carr is over 12 million. Claiborne is over 5 m and Scandrick is over 4 mil and wanting a raise.

The guy was rated properly on the board and he fits a need and salary slot nicely. Carr's base salary this year is more than all of Jones contract put together.

Weird to see a complaint thread about this pick. And started by Alexander.

We were widely reported to be targeting CB. It shouldn't be a surprise to anybody that that's where we went, given the way the board broke tonight. Given the player was well regarded at a position of need and on a defense badly in need of a talent infusion, how 'bout we wait to see him play a single snap before we try to diminish anything?
I can honestly understand not being happy about not taking Brown. I really liked Brown -- was my top 1-2 interior players in the draft, and he would help us a lot and immediately. But I just think Jones is on another level in terms of talent. You don't pass those guys up.

I liked Brown, too. After Dupree and Jones, he was who I'd have taken. But we only get one pick, and there's little to complain about with the guy we went with.

i just hate when we take a player thats "versatile" . It usually never works out for us. Just find a damn position and stick with it. I like Wilcox and Church just fine at safety. We went 12-4 with them last year with a bad pass rush. They can get even better. Hopefully this Jones kid is an upgrade over claiborne /Sterling Moore.

Eh...they called Tyron Smith, Zach Martin and Anthony Hitchens versatile. And those are some of our best picks in the past 5 years. I honestly can't think of any other draftees that the team has described as versatile in the past 5 years.

Not really what I meant . We knew right away Smith would be a tackle and Martin a guard . Hitchens is a LB. But safety and CB are two totally positions !

Not really. Not necessarily a bigger difference than LT vs. RT or OG vs. OT or ILB vs. OLB. I imagine they like the idea of basically having 3 corners on the field at all times with Smith possibly playing safety in the base (1/3 of snaps) and outside corner in the nickel (2/3 of snaps).

I really don't mind the pick. But I'm hoping he pans out at corner. I have a feeling we will play some dime next year!

If they did that, then they wouldnt be Cowboy fans!

He's played less than 3 full seasons.
He was a starter when he drove drunk and he is a projected starter today.
At the time he tried to end his career he looked like a future Pro Bowler.
He held up in the hole versus double teams with relative ease and was getting push up the middle on passing downs.

Malcom Brown was a really good collegiate player but he also completely disappeared at times for some of the saddest Longhorn teams of the last 20 years.

Might be best as a 5T DE. Not really strong enough to be a pure NT and not quick enough for a 3T.

You seem to like Josh Brent a hell of a lot more than me... hope youre right

I like the pick.

No matter who we take there is always an army of the " We should of taken **** bloke " and so on.

I am not against trading up in the 2nd Rd to grab Gregory either as there is no way he falls to us at 60.

Btw, last name Jones haven't been working for us . Curse of the Joneses. Haha jk. Kidding aside.

Wrote it on the draft forum and I made it clear what I think of Jones. I'm just curious if anyone has any tape on him being physical. I'm talking about maybe against a bigger WR or a good textbook tackle, a good disengage to get a tackle, maybe a tackle on a RB? I saw 3 film On him; 2 on draft breakdown and 1 on youtube just because we drafted him. I still feel the sameway that I do now like it did leading to the draft. Before the draft the 2 film breakdown on draftbreakdown just left a ... that's it? Feeling which is still lingering. Would love to get excited about this pick other than telling myself "its ok, at least we got a top ranked CB."

Without a pass rush, it does not matter how good Jones is. this team has got to find some pass rushers.

Cliche

Pass rush cant eliminate everything, like an average receiver, slicing thru your entire secondary on 3rd&10 for a 50 yard TD. You need someone in the secondary to make the damn tackle!

Have we forgotten about Sterling Moore's second half performance at GB?
