Have you noticed how many choices the Patriots have wasted on defensive backs in recent years?

That is not exactly an endorsement.

Really is stunning how often you ***** about a team that you apparently are a fan of.

He looks out of position quite a bit in the highlights that i've seen..but in some highlights he looks ok. most of his good highlights were poor pass attempts that he jumped on.

I will embrace him now that he is a Cowboy though.

That's what I saw, but I didn't watch much. I'll wait...

I think most of us liked the Martin pick, most on here didn't like Frederick pick.

Callahan isn't here anymore building the line. Commanders as an aside went first pick on OL and I have a strong feeling BC is going to do what he did here.

I don't trust anybody here anymore from personnel besides Rod Marinelli, because at least he was constantly churning his roster to get guys to play, until I see some results on the field.

To all of you throwing a temper tantrum about the Claiborne pick, let me try to provide a little big-picture perspective.

Think of a scenario in which someone approached you four years ago with the following proposition. Your favorite team can head down one of the following two paths:
  1. Over the next 4 years, the Cowboys will select 4 solid, first round picks that very few people will really be able to really complain about
  2. Over the next 4 years, the Cowboys will select 3 Pro Bowlers in the first round, but one of the 4 picks will flame out
Which scenario would you choose?

I'd posit that both scenarios are HIGHLY unlikely because the draft has an inherent "crap shoot" nature to it and few teams can get through a 4 year span without any disappointments. I'd also argue that very few teams can get through a 4-year span picking 3 Pro-Bowlers in the first round (although I haven't done the analysis to prove the point).

In the grand scheme of things, I'd say the Cowboys have done pretty well in the first round over the past 4 years with Garrett at the helm (heading down Scenario #2).

I also think that throwing a continued tantrum over one pick seems pretty futile, given the improvement this past year and the positive direction that this team seems to be heading.

As someone else pointed out, the Claiborne pick seemed to be an impulse pick, and they hadn't done their homework on the kid because they didn't expect him to slip (shame on them). But it seems to me that when this staff has the time to think and work methodically through their board, they do seem to make pretty sound decisions (at least lately).

And for that reason, I remain optimistic about the pick.

What was the point of this thread? To complain about a pick that happened four years ago?

Yeah Callahan wasn't the only reason the oline was very good and great at times. The actual PLAYERS were THE reason. It's not like the players are going to be completely clueless because Callahan isn't here anymore. Most of our line were very talented players before being coached by Callahan. Screw Callahan. And I trust the coaching staff as a whole.

He will play some FS.

If you watched the press conference, they made it painfully obvious that he would see some time there.

why wouldnt they just draft the best safety in the draft if they wanted a safety?

A complete CYA choice for the Claiborne debacle.

Do yourself a favor and ignore the talk he will be some savior at FS.

Not sure I would call it CYA we drafted Claiborne in 2012 and have not been drafting many CB since then. You could just as well call it a CYA for Carr. Bottom line Dallas needed to address the position and did so with a very talented player in Jones. As for the position of FS I think Jones is here to play CB however should a time come when Dallas feels they should move him that option is available to them. That could be 2 or 3 years down the road who knows how things will be at that point.

Callahan is a loss, there is no sugar coating that. Garrett pretty much ran him off with the way he treated him. However, I agree that the players are great and far enough along. But coaching does matter and we can only hope the new coach is as good as Callahan.

This should help you...from Sturm -- he is impressed by his physicalness. In fact, according to the rest of his assessment (in the article) on his negatives, he's TOO physical at the point of attack and will draw flags until he learns some technique. He also is a consistent tackler.

Bob Sturm On Byron Jones...

With Jones, he checks the boxes for just about everything you like for a NFL corner in this present generation. He gets up on you in press coverage and tries to suffocate, knowing he can stay with you down the field. He is best like this where his long arms and huge hands are used to direct you on a re-route. He is right in the hip pocket not the fades and although he sees some action, he generally is able to handle what comes his way. He is also surprisingly physical for a gifted athlete (usually it is one or the other) and is willing to get dirty to make a tackle on your bubble screens or runs around the corner. His overall game is solid and he looks like he has the tools to develop into a #1 CB who is up for your best receiver and willing to travel side to side to stay with him. Absolutely best in press coverage versus the zones Connecticut would run. Nice ball skills over the top as well.

Thanks for that info. Strum does a good job of analysis in his game breakdowns so I tend to trust his opinion more than some of the " talking heads" on the networks

Good grief...........Clairborn was the 1st draft pick missed on, wont be the last............part of the risk of running a NFL franchise, the idea is to minimize them, and that the Cowboys have moved to well above average the last few years.

I would have gone another direction, but I can't get upset yet about the pick. I want my team to trust their board and have conviction with those choices. 4 out of the last five years have been home runs.

My problem with high corner back picks is it appears there is limited upside with these picks. I may be proven completely wrong here but I think you have more upside taking a pressure player. In addition, the corner back position has a lot of dependency on pressure players. The more plays you make the opposing QB's make hurried, bad decisions the more opportunities you give to your secondary.

Again, I want good players regardless of position. Although, I am just a firm believer that you find the QB first and then build your lines on both sides of the ball.
