I agree that if the Cowboys don't get Prescott signed to a long term deal before free agency starts next season that they will tag him but that does not automatically mean that Prescott will play on that tag offer. The Cowboys tagged Lawrence a second time and then a short time later signed him to a long term contract. Now if Prescott does end up playing on the tag next season how he plays and the Cowboys play will have an effect on how they approach Prescott after next season. If Prescott and the Cowboys do really well and get to say the NFC championship game then the would be one thing but if the Cowboys only get to the wildcard game or not make the playoffs but most of the sporting world places the blame for the Cowboys failure on the defense, that would be another thing. Now if Prescott doesn't agree to a long term contract before free agency starts then the Cowboys should use the non-exclusive franchise tag so the Cowboys and Prescott see what his actual value is and if Prescott submits a contract offer from another team to the Cowboys they can either match that or they will get 2 first round picks from that team.

Prescott signed his franchise tender quickly last year. Perhaps he reevaluates because of injury but then again if the injury is that bad he probably signs it anyway.
You only give the nonexclusive to a QB if you do not intend to keep him. That is not going to happen.
Do you not remember 2000-2005 when we last were searching for a QB?
