The problem for the Commanders is this just becomes a self perpetuating cycle.

Phillip Daniels is an old, serviceable starter at the end of his career. He's not someone who should make or break your season. He should be a replaceable player. Given that he's 35 years old, the Commanders should have already had someone in place in their organization to step in for him. Why don't the Commanders have anyone grooming behind him? Because they throw high draft picks at old vets and mid-level role players to fill holes for the here and now with little to no regard for longterm roster building. And now they've just done it again, and they're going to find themselves in the same exact situation 1 to 2 years when they're looking for Jason Taylor's replacement. The Commanders just slap a temporary patch on the problem and stay in franchise pergatory ... just bad enough to not really contend and just good enough that they can't really rebuild and upgrade the talent.

My thoughts exactly... also ..

What does this trade do for the skins?

in the short term and in the long term

Short Term

Does it make them a better pass rushing team? well.. yeah maybe, but having just one guy being able to rush the passer makes him pretty easy to shut down. It also somewhat decreases their ability to stop the run so other teams may not have to pass as often negating much of the increase of the pass rush...

Long Term

I see no benefit... they will have no tradeable commodities from this deal.
No long term deal in place I am guessing as a normal 2nd rnd pick will sign for 4 years.

I just do not see the benefit... now time may prove me wrong but if I had been GM I would not have done it.

A 2nd round pick for Taylor is not a bad deal. The guy is in tip top shape and he says he will only play one more season but we know how that goes. The next thing we hear in a month from now is that he loves it in D.C. and he wants to play 3 more years.

They needed a DE and he was the best available. Snyder went and got himself a Pro Bowl DE to replace an average one. His team was in the playoffs last season so of course he's going to take a risk like this.

I get all the bashing that this is a not a good trade for them because it's the Skins, but if it was another team who made this deal they would be getting kudos.

And as for people who say that 2nd round pick is worth more I got two words for you - Anthony Fasano. You can never tell what these draft picks will become and Taylor is a known commodity already.

The Skins still don't scare me anyway because he's the only pass rusher they have anyway. Besides we handled Taylor last season when we played the Dolphins so we know how to stop him from getting to Romo.

There were rumors (Peter King)that the Giants were eyeing Taylor if Shokey plays up in camp . In that trade the Giants sent Shokey to the Saints, the Dolphins sent Tayor to the Giants and the Saints sent their 2nd and 5th round picks to the Dolphins .

I would have wished it had been a 3rd pick instead of a 2nd, but the 6th round pick in '10 doesn't bother me. I hope we get two years out of of Taylor though. Sad to say but we just upgraded our Defense, but not in the way I wanted to.

BTW, I'm new here...don't worry not a troll, etc. Just a Skins fan that likes to see what the rivals are discussing sometimes.

I hate when news about another team's acquisition has over 4,000 posts on a Cowboys board. Oops... I just added to it...

It's a 300 post thread predominantly about what a horrible deal it was and how it won't help the Skins at all and how unworried everyone is. Did Erasmus James get this much attention?

Oh yeah and it gives the know-nothings a chance to compare Campbell to Quincy Carter...again. And to go on and on about how the Commanders have no talent...despite being a 9-7 team and making the playoffs with six starters on the IR. But I digress...

I got a text message from a friend telling me about the deal -- my 1st thought was "Crap, they gave up the farm again..." I was thinking at least a 1st rounder next year, possibly more. I was relieved that it was a 2nd round pick and a 6th next year.

Unless he only plays for one year -- I believe this was a very smart move. With 2 DEs going down for the season in the 1st day of camp, this is a no-brainer. This guy was the DPOY 2 years ago. He's 33, almost 34. And he's only about 8 mos. older the Flozell Adams (and in better shape) who the Cowboys just gave a huge deal to...and he's about 10 mos younger then TO...who the Cowboys just gave a huge deal to...and he's on the field, unlike Terri Glenn...who the Cowboys gave a huge deal to last year...get where I am going with this?

This is NOT Bruce Smith. Smith was 36 when he came to Washington (and still put up 10 sacks that year). Smith did however put up 14 sacks at 34...so I kinda hope this IS Bruce Smith...

And Hostile, as for point about young DEs, remember the name Chris Wilson. He's an undersized UDFA from last year (6'5" 241). In VERY limited playing time, registered 4 sacks in the regular season, and one more in the playoffs against Seattle. They are trying to bulk him up. He's at about 250 right now. He is showing some promise. And there is Erasmus James -- who hopefully will stay healthy. A lot to wish for...but I am excited to have them learn from Taylor.

Its not a bad deal for someone who is a legit title contender.

The Skins have a long ways to go still.

Is Taylor the teaching kind? I really don't know, but he strieks me as a self-centered guy who doesn't have football as his top priority.

I have a feeling a 1-15 season will do that to you :)

I have heard whispers, not much more then conjecture at this point, that he would play for longer for someone who is in contention for the playoffs. We'll see.

I can't help but think, even watching the guy work in practice, in the weight room (he's still in phenomenal shape at 33) can only help.

That is another reason why I like this move.

See, I'm still my same selfish Skins hating self.

Well then consider your Burgundy Gold and Black Fan Card rescinded. Too bad b/c it was worth a free kids meal at Johnny Rockets! :D

I did not realize you gave up a 2nd for Erasmus, come to think of it, I also did not realize he was 34.

I wouldn't say we have a long ways to go. You never know what Zorn will bring (or take away) from the table, but we were a playoff team last year, returning all of our starters (minus Sean Taylor). The Giants showed last year how an above average team can get on a roll - it's not like the Giants were much better than the Skins last year.

Zorn will bring a west coast offense that your not going to fully be able to jump into within a year and even if you do I dont think your talented enough on offense or defense to make a strong enough push.

And the Giants had a lot of strong pieces that help win a Superbowl.

The Skins have some pieces but they arent very strong. They are just good.

I think you guys finish last in the division.

Quite right. I think the Giants are much better, at 2 key positions, than the Skins that really helped allow them to do that sort of run, but there is no denying that any team can get hot at the right time and go on an unexpected roll.

I still believe the Skins are 3rd in the NFC East, at this point, but you never know how things will shake out.

As opposed by the denizens of Commanders fans over at Commanders boards (and Cowboys boards) who write about how the Cowboys have no talent and everybody on the team is overrated, despite not having a losing season in the past 3 years and with a 13-3 record in 2007.

If they can get two quality years from Taylor, then it was worth the risk. But if they don't or he only plays for one year, it's a bit of a mistake given the cost of his salary and giving up a 2nd rounder for a very old roster. I'm not so sure the Commanders are close to being a Super Bowl contender as they went 5-7 before the win streak to get them into the playoffs, with Campbell going down and having to start an aging QB in his place.

He'll also be switching positions, which doesn't guarantee gloom and doom, but is definitely less than ideal.

Interesting these two statements are in the same post...considering where the Giants were picked to finish last year :D
