After listening to the Shefter report yesterday (I know I know) about Rice it might have changed my mind on him.

Basically he said that because of Rice's offseason work, the Ravens thought he was primed for a huge year last year. Then the suspension happened. Now he has changed his workout routine and is in the best shape of his life and could still be an effective RB if anyone would give him a chance.

Without saying it, Shefty basically indicated Rice is the best FA RB option available. The question is, would the Cowboys be willing bite off another PR nightmare this off season?

I think the situation is far from dire, obviously management feels the same way. If it was a dire situation they'd have drafted for a RB, or traded for one, or brought in some of the free agents out there.

Not dire but it should be noted that its a big concern. I would not be comfortable Randle being the only runningback come game day. Clutts also subbing in for a runningback position also does not deem well for a position which comprised of 40% of our offense and was the reason we went into the playoffs.

Ya draft Coleman and miss out on Gregory, Jones, Green or Wilson. Sorry but we had other needs then running back, don't draft for need unless they are best player available on the board.

Yeah I hear ya, Coleman in the 3rd will turn out to be a bargain for the ages, hope Gregory in the 2nd does the same...

So a door that was never shut has now been opened? And "leaving options open" means "OH MY, WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO NOW!!!!!!"
And "gas in the tank" means CJ.
This is a great thread!!!:angry::thumbup::)

I am curious what you guys think of the available free agent running backs. I know that we have been linked to CJ but I'm not really sure what he has left. Ray Rice is obviously still available as well. The scope of this thread EXCLUDES who they are as people. I am just curious who is still out there that can still PLAY NOW at a high level, or any up and coming backs which might be on the street or available for trade.

Which basically means you're asking people to waste your time. If you exclude something that all but assures a player isn't a viable option, what's the point?

This organization obviously trusts Will McClay to make the right decision when the time comes to do so. Whether it's CJ, Rice, or sombody else, I'm betting McClay will be likely to offer some sage advice whenever this organization is ready to pull the trigger on a deal.

It's tough for us, as fans, to sit by and await a decision but, obviously that's what's in the offing as things now stand. The FO is evidently reluctant to abandon their hopes to keep what we already have in house but that option appears to be getting exhausted with each passing week.

Seems to me it's just a matter of time before the decision to add the best RB available will be forthcoming. I''m betting McClay and the FO will hammer it out eventually when the need for a HEALTHY candidate at the RB spot makes their impending decision a must. Like the rest of us, I'm anxious to see it materialize.

I think the front office is hoping the right candidate surfaces once the final cuts are in the books. If so, let's hope they're right. At any rate, they seem more patient than the rest of us -- not too sure if that's a good thing or not.

Forget public perception, I wouldn't want Rice if he came to play for free. The guy is a scumbag.

Don't even factor what happened off the field with him all you have to do is look at his body of work before all the crap and its pretty obvious the tank is empty with him. This team does not need an old washed up veteran; if Randle does not seize this opportunity there will be plenty of young vets that are going to be available. There are to many teams right now with 3-4 quality rbs on their rosters.

Great post. Nailed it.

No, it means that I don't care to discuss his off the field issues in this thread. It is thread about who is out there that can still contribute on the field. A guy who can still play is always an option to play for us, even if he has off the field issues, unless of course he is currently suspended. The team must then decide if the player is worth the bad publicity and/or headache. A guy who can't play isn't a viable option, no matter how awesome they are as a citizen.

Watch for 1st cut lists and teams looking to trade a back up RB.

I would GLADLY take Rice right now. I think they will avoid him due to the bad PR but I think he would be a solid backup.

Coleman will probably be a good back longer term, but right now he is not practicing due to a hamstring issue, so he would have fit right in here.

Jonathan Dwyer o_O

I've given up on GT backs after being let down too many times.

Never thought any would be studs, but at the same time I didn't think they would be duds.

I thought Dwyer was one of the better backs I've seen come through GT in the past 10 years. Thought he could of had a nice solid career in the NFL once he adapted to playing in a pro style offense.
