Cowboys to leave door open for a FA RB?

No need if McFadden is coming back next practice. We have our 3 rb's, plus the other 2 we signed as camp bodies. Only way we bring in someone else is if one of the 3 has a big time injury.

I like Dunbar, haven't really seen enough of the ocean kid to warrant an honest opinion as a viable option. I'll take your word for it.

This thing will go nuclear if we bring in Ray Rice after already signing Hardy.

What's the worst that could happen?

I posted this elsewhere, but I'd be curious to see what the Bears will do at RB.

They have a legitimate starter and workhorse in Matt Forte -1038 yards rushing, 6 TD, 102 receptions, 808 yards, 4 TD receiving

They signed free agent Jacquizz Rogers this year

They have 2014 4th rounder, Ka'Deem Carey

and they just drafted Jeremy Langford in the 4th round this year

These guys would be an up grade.

I think one gets released barring injury to one of the others but I also see situations like this as a reason Dallas may wait before going after a RB. Fans can panic all they want, but hopefully Dallas will not. There will be some decent options out there as teams cut down and in the meantime Cowboys will continue to work with the guys we have

Absolute PR nightmare. It's one thing to take the blow of a guy who was accused of DV, but a whole nother animal to take him and then also sign a guy who was on VIDEO knocking the stuffing out of his wife. Sponsors would drop us, people would probably start boycotting our games, a bunch of foolishness. Beyond the fact that he looked washed up the last season he played, Rice isn't good enough to offset the hell storm that we would deal with from signing him.

Well the coaches love the 3 we have. Yes they are frustrated with McFadden's injury, but do want to see what he has on the field. If he has nothing and is still injury prone, then we most likely look elsewhere.

I am curious what you guys think of the available free agent running backs. I know that we have been linked to CJ but I'm not really sure what he has left. Ray Rice is obviously still available as well. The scope of this thread EXCLUDES who they are as people. I am just curious who is still out there that can still PLAY NOW at a high level, or any up and coming backs which might be on the street or available for trade.

I think Chris Johnson is the best current free agent option still available. And anyone considering him 'done' needs to consider McFadden a never was. Johnson was better last year than McFadden has been in his last 3 years.

Off field issues aside, I think Ray Rice looks done.

But if we're looking for strictly a backup for Randle, I think Ben Tate can get that job done on the cheap.

If we're talking about a trade option, I think Montee Ball is the best option that I feel could be available. I do not feel that Lamar Miller has any chance of being traded by the Dolphins.

Chris Johnson, but he has to learn how to block. I think McFadden is on the roster because of that...

So if we got any of these guys that no one else wants so far, you would bench Randle who by all accounts has looked really good?

Or these guys are backups? Yeah I'm sure Chris Johnson would love that.

It's Randle's job to lose period. Anyone we bring in will be for depth.

Thi sis exactly why Mcfadden is here. He will be the passing down RB. I honestly think Randle is > than CJ2K at this point so I wouldn't waste my time on any free agent RBs unless or until one of our 3 guys is injured. Dubar has a spot on the roster due to special teams. And there is no way we carry more than that on our roster so why bring in a free agent. Who do you cut?? CJ wont play special teams, Steven Jackson wont and Ray Rice wont. I do not see a scenario where any of these guys are signed unless theres an injury

I think it is Randle job as long as he can produce. I would expect any player brought in later would come in as a backup unless they proved to be the better option as the season progresses

Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar is undergoing an MRI on his ankle.

Dunbar got rolled up in Wednesday's practice. Per reporter Brandon George, the team doesn't believe Dunbar's injury is serious, but are "making sure." At the very least, he's going to miss the next few days of practice, and quite possibly more. There are touches there for the taking for Dunbar, but he has to stay on the field.

There are going to be a lot of serviceable players in the cut-downs. We don't need a starting RB. At most, we're going to need a guy who can carry it a bit and who could serve as a decent injury replacement.

There's also the chance that we could flip an extra TE or maybe even a DL at cut downs to a team and bring in another player. I don't have much interest in any of the veterans out there right now (Pierre Thomas, maybe a little bit, but we seem to have little interest in him). Other than that, I'm content to wait for a guy as long as he's healthy and smart enough to pass protect. If that guy's Darren McFadden, then, great. If he can't cut it, I'd rather churn through young guys we like like crazy for now and wait for the cut downs. Fortunately for us, RB is probably the easiest offensive position to fill, and you can do it with the right rookie and still survive. I'd rather see us have healthy smart players in that group and then just roll with Randle than try to reach for an upgrade at starter.
