Cowboys trade 2014 6th rd pick for Chiefs 2014 7th rd pick and DE Edgar Jones

Based on the original trade chart, the "value" of the swap could be anywhere from R6-6 to basically nothing. (Calculations do not consider comp picks that occur between rounds)

Best Case:
Cowboys: R6-32
Chiefs: R7-1
Difference: Basically Zero Value

Worst Case:
Cowboys: R6-1
Chiefs: R7-32
Difference: R6-6

If they both have approximately the same picks as in the 2013 draft:
Cowboys: R6-18
Chiefs: R7-1
Difference: R7-20

There are still players to be had at the end of these drafts. As silly as it sounds, it's perfectly sound reasoning to want to get those picks back.

I agree. That is why when people say "it is just a 6th rounder" or "just a 7th rounder" it is silly.

Every pick can become great if you know what you are doing. They are valuable.

This one really feels like a non issue. We traded down probably no more then 15 spots to get an apparently good special teams player who can be DL depth in a pinch.

We traded for a special teams player?

Considering the amount of players that get knocked off the roster for these special team aces, you would think special teams would at least be decent for the Cowboys. Seems like this quality of player could be picked up off any street corner instead of actually trading for them. At least an effort could have been made to find a player that has a history of playing at a decent level on defense with some production. He will knock a player off the roster with ability to get more than 1.5 sacks in a five year period.

6th for a 7th is minimal value. For a core ST guy, it is a good deal

Not trying to go Spagnola here, but if he were a "core ST guy" why would the Chiefs trade him?

Keep in mind, they have perhaps the best ST coach in the league in Dave Toub on their payroll before you answer.

Good point.

Could it be they have young guys coached up by their excellent ST coach who are cheaper?

The bigger issue here isn't the compensation to KC, but rather that this puts us +1 on cuts.

If you're saying that we will be sitting at 54 players, then I don't think we are because we moved Livings to IR.

If that isn't what you're saying, then I apologize.

It is very rare that a contending team takes special teams so serious they make a trade at the final cuts like this.

I get the idea we needed to improve the unit. This just seems like a drastic and risky way to address it.

How is it drastic and risky? I don't see how it's either.

I'm curious if he will ever sniff the field as a DE. It sounds like he is a very good special teams player. We have good reason to address that area. I like the deal.

It isn't what I'm saying. We're still at 53, but I'm certain we're not going to keep just 4 corners on the roster, someone is going to have to get cut.

We have 5 defensive ends on the team, he won't play a single snap at end.

I don't know man... I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility for him to take some snaps away from Selvie or Wilber at some point. It's not like they're all that.

And he is at 1.5 sacks over the course of his career?

Edgar Jones was slated to earn $715K.

We just negotiated Danny McCray down to $700K.

If they did, good for them. But funny how they can move their "ace" yet feel good about it, yet we bargain with our overpaid one to get him to stay.
