Here's a comparison of Welker's cap hits for 2008-2011 compared to Crayton.

I wouldn't have paid him any more than that, but in a couple years of cap expansion that might look like a smaller amount.

Still... Glad to have his dependable hands around for the future.

Small point but I think we can actually spread his bonus over 5 years starting this year so the cap hit is even less (300k less per year). It's a good deal for everyone.

Pretty solid deal for Dallas. Given Owens and Glenn's ages, we need a somewhat young, but experienced WR in case they get hurt next season. We also need a PR and Crayton can fill that role. In a few years with the salary cap constantly increasing, a $4 million cap hit for a #2/#3 WR who can return punts will be very reasonable.

Why did we bother keeping Jacques Reeves this season if we're going to let him walk?

Reeves is fast and young with upside, that isn't the type of player I want to give up on.

And retaining Keith Davis has nothing to do with the secondary, he's our best special teams player.

Will either player be that expensive?

Yeah, that looks like right around what Welker got and I agree that the Pats have the better player for similar $$$$$. That said, comparing this contract to the perception of Wes Welker BEFORE he went off this year makes it seem about right.......Also, I would agree Crayton probably could have gotten a little more on the market.

I don't know how much better Welker is than Crayton

Reeves is one of the better 3rd corners in the game, you need 3 good corners, even 4 in this league now, Keith Davis is a great special teamer, you win w/ depth and special teams, the cap increases every year, and I doubt it would take much to sign both Reeves and Davis considering they are backups

We cannot re-sign everyone.

Players like Reeves and Davis will have to go when you figure in what we need to look into signing better players like Chris Canty and Marion Barber.

No offense, but Jacques Reeves is a dime-a-dozen cornerback that we did an outstanding job of keeping shielded.

I think two fold - he is a shade better than Crayton and is really the second passing option now, behind Moss.

I don't know how much of that I agree with. I do think Reeves was shielded quite a bit, but I do think he has pretty decent ball skill. I dunno about a dime a dozen - I think there is a sizeable drop off between Reeves and Jones.

And you can't look at Welker's contract after this season. You have to look at it before he was signed. Before this season he had a 67 catch season, a 29 catch season and two seasons on the bench.

PFT is blogging that this signing is a preemptive strike to block Parcells from taking Crayton...

'BOYS BLOCK TUNA FROM TAKING CRAYTON
Dallas Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton, a looming free agent who was expected to be pursued by the Dolphins and new football poobah Bill Parcells, won't be going anywhere in 2008.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Crayton has signed a four-year, $14 million deal. The contract includes a $6 million signing bonus.
The commitment to Crayton could mean the end of the line for Terry Glenn, who is signed through 2010 at salaries of $1.74 million, $2 million, and $4.95 million, respectively, over the next three seasons. Glenn has yet to play in 2007 due to a knee injury, but is slated to make his debut in Week Seventeen.
Parcells selected Glenn in the first round of the 1996 draft, when Parcells was the coach of the Patriots.
I don't understand why this signals the end for Glenn? If he can perform, why not keep him.

I agree, but I really, really liked Welker and that deal. I thought they got a steal and that Welker was much better than his numbers looked. He was perfect for that system.

We have all the cap room we need.

If we want to resign any players, now's the time to do it before the spending spree begins in the off-season.

If we intend to draft a corner early, then Reeves is expendable, but you can't replace his starting experience with any rookie or second year player and not expect to see a big drop off, IMO.

And with our various issues in kick coverage this season, are we going to let the heart of the unit walk out of the door? You can't draft players to do what the Bullet does.

I think Welker's a little overrated for the simple fact that he needs Moss on the field to open up the secondary the way it is which is why he spent so much time on the bench. But so do a lot of slot receivers and he does a better job of using his speed thru traffic than Crayton. They're about even with their ability get open thru traffic, but Welker is a great YAC guy. His size really benefits him to squeeze thru holes.

Wes Welker is flat out quick and gets himself open.....

Like the Crayton signing a lot also.
