That's a good bit of cash for a #3 receiver. At first glance, it seems cheaper than Welker, though.
That was my feeling too. I like the deal but .. does this seal Glenn's fate for next year then? Or was I being naive to begin with that he might be back.

Glenn is extremely cheap next season. If he wants to come back, he will. He might not want to come back for just $1.7 million, though. But if we don't win a Super Bowl, you never know. That could be driving him hard -- it certainly did this season.

It's a good signing. It seems pretty cheap compared to what I thought someone else might pay him if he reached free agency. He's never going to strike fear into the heart of defenses, but he does tend to find ways to get open even with some of the physical limitations he has like his lack of speed.

I think we need some depth at the oline...

But Crayton got a fair deal. And he gets to stay in Dallas. I'm sure that he likes being 13-2 a lot. Not to mention, his role in this offense will somewhat increase. I think he'll be the Antwan Randal El of this team, but better in a lot of ways... he can throw the ball. So don't forget that in the post season... We haven't done any flea flickers or anything like that, but that doesn't mean that we won't run some trick plays in the post season.

Oh, and apologies for being harsh towards you in a post. We all have our opinions. I shouldn't have written that.

Peace

Just curious what makes you think we dont have depth on the line. We have procter, berger, free, mcquistan and marten.

Marten seems to project to a left guard at some point and free played well at left tackle in camp and of course mcquistan can play either side.

I am not sure we are not set on the line for a while. Obviously flo getting a new contract is the key and if he does I think our line is pretty stable for a few years.

I think Welker's a little overrated for the simple fact that he needs Moss on the field to open up the secondary the way it is which is why he spent so much time on the bench. But so do a lot of slot receivers and he does a better job of using his speed thru traffic than Crayton. They're about even with their ability get open thru traffic, but Welker is a great YAC guy. His size really benefits him to squeeze thru holes.

My Two cents, this is a good signing for the Cowboys, Crayton's not really costing us much money and he's alot cheaper then some FA, he has sure hands and good Chemistry with Romo. Good Job Jerry!, now get Hamlin done.

On the one hand, we know what we've got in Crayton. He's a solid #2 WR (but a #3 option on a team; behind Owens and Witten)

He's a great #3 WR and he could be that next year if Glenn returns...

Can you imagine Romo with Owens, Glenn, Crayton, Barber, and Witten to spread the field with? Dear God....

But on the #2 ranked offense in the NFL, Crayton has been a solid contributor. And if Glenn doesn't come back, we at least have someone who has shown the ability to play opposite Owens and play it pretty well.

At the very least "Paytrick Cratton" has proven to be a reliable 3rd option. And given the age of our established "starters" - this signing is just cheap insurance. Throw in the hometown discount... and it's a real no-brainer for Dallas.

I don't understand why Welker needs moss. Most of welkers receptions are in traffic within 5-10 yards of the line of scrimmage. He gets open because he out-jitterbugs the one on one coverage on slants and is compact enough that he is hard to defend.

Welker needs Brady. He fits the ball into the openings. But Welker is about 6M against the cap next year and will likely get a new deal.

Definitely agree with this. I thought that was the best part of the deal when the Pats went through with it. Welker and Brady were perfect for each other.

I love this deal. Crayton is an important part of this team, and I would much rather have him and his passion for the Cowboys than some mercenary free agent or some clueless draft pick.

I was talking long-term, good players who could back up Gurode or Flozell.

I'm quite pleased to read this news... Crayton has been a favorite of mine since before the Cowboys drafted him, and over these past few years has grown to be even more of a favorite, in the Walt Garrison/Bill Bates overachiever mode... I love those guys who might not be the most gifted, but make it because they work harder than everybody else...

This move makes sense, the dollars are reasonable and the Boys have some age in their WR corps...

SWEET!!!

Very friendly cap deal here guys, he only counts $1 mill in 2008 and I think right now we are projected to be around $18 mill under next years cap. This leaves us plenty of room for more extensions and to sign a free agent or two from another team.:)

He'll actually count 2.5 mil, pal... the 1 million in base salary, and 1.5 million prorated from his 4 year, 6 mil signing bonus...

Which is still quite reasonable, for a receiver with legit 50 catch potential... a team needs that kind of player...

Dallas Cowboys to sign Crayton to new deal

10:05 PM CST on Thursday, December 27, 2007

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News
cwatkins@***BANNED-URL***

IRVING – On Thursday night, just days away from the regular-season finale on one of the best Cowboys' season in history, the team agreed to a four-year contract with wide receiver and DeSoto native Patrick Crayton.

The contract, expected to be signed today, can be worth as much as $14 million. Crayton received a $6 million signing bonus.

Dallas valued Crayton more this season after he replaced an injured Terry Glenn as the No. 2 receiver in the lineup.

Crayton set career-highs in catches (48), yards (689) and touchdowns (seven) this season. With this new deal, Dallas prevented Crayton from becoming an unrestricted free agent where he could have received a bigger contract.

But his desire to remain home was more important than going somewhere else.

"This is exactly where I want to be," Crayton said before Cowboys' practice on Thursday. "My client is very happy," said Crayton's agent Fred Lyles. "He didn't consider the money. He considered his family for making his decision. His wife, son and mother are very important to him because they live in Dallas. He's a family person and it means a lot to him."

Crayton will have a $1 million base salary in 2008 and $1.5 million in 2009. He receives a base salary of $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 in 2011. But in the final year of his contract he can earn an additional $1 million in salary if he reaches certain incentives.

This season, Dallas has re-signed quarterback Tony Romo and nose tackle Jay Ratliff to long-term contracts and reworked outside linebacker Greg Ellis' deal to give him financial security.

With Crayton out of the way, Dallas can work on restricted free agents, running back Marion Barber and defensive end Chris Canty for long-term deals. The Cowboys can also seek to keep some key unrestricted free agents such as left tackle Flozell Adams, safety and special teams ace Keith Davis and running back Julius Jones.

Dallas has roughly $3.8 million under the salary cap.

Crayton gets extension

Wide receiver Patrick Crayton has become the next Cowboy to agree to a contract extension.
Crayton, an unrestricted free agent, has agreed to terms on a new four-year, $14 million deal, according to a source. The deal includes a $6 million signing bonus.
Crayton said Thursday he was hoping to reach a deal by the end of the week. He defused any speculation that he might be interested in signing with Miami and reuniting with Bill Parcells.
“This is exactly where I want to be,” said Crayton, who is from DeSoto.
Crayton has produced career numbers this season while replacing the injured Terry Glenn as a starter. He has 48 catches for 689 yards and seven touchdowns.
Crayton will make $1 million in 2008, $1.5 in 2009, $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 in 2011 with a $1 million escalator. Crayton could have possibly received a bigger contract by testing free agency. But he had a strong desire to stay in his hometown area and signed now for the security in case of an injury.

Glenn was my boy last year. Obviously, he's out. So Crayton grew on me this year--though I always liked him. He's always been up on my list of favorites as well... just not as high up as some others. But I think since he'll be a Cowboy for a few more years :D, that I'll be becoming more of a fan in years, and even games, to come. He's proved that he's awesome!

I'd like our line-up to be Glenn, Crayton and Owens. I still think that if any of those 3 players get hurt, that each is capable of being the number 1,2 or 3 receiver depending on the call that is being made by Red Balls, which is what is so cool about this "interchangeable" offense with Jason Garrett's genius Ivy League touches on what he's learned from his previous teachers.
The genius in Garrett combined with the moxie of Romo in addition to the surrounding cast which consists of the likes of Witten, Owens, Glenn, Colombo, Flozell, Barber, Fasano, etc... coupled with a good defense--not to mention Phillips' swagger makes for an almost unstoppable team. We're good. Scratch that...

We're a great team. Any other year, I'd be saying that we're a shoo in for the Super Bowl Win. But this is a special year, which means that it carries much larger implications if we win.

We have the potential to set the stage for setting up the condition to trump all other dynasties. With players like Crayton leading the way in showing his teammates that both sides can be fair and, the more understanding you are, the more money your team has, thus, the better chances of winning your team has, it make for a good environment.

Crayton is one of the smartest players that we have. Romo, Crayton and Witten are a big reason why T.O. has been successful here. Without their mentoring, I don't think he could have come in and handled Parcells' disciplinary attitude. Romo befriended him, and Crayton just does what he does out there... plays football. That sets an example and I think all of those guys are well mannered enough to deal with his overly jocular manner.

Mr. Crayton, I send my regards... and an extended welcoming. I'll be enjoying it, for years to come. :)

I think we cut our losses with Julius. He's the one week spot on our offense, in my opinion.

And we can't afford him.:
