I like this if true. Romo goes out as a Cowboy; moves into the broadcast booth, where he will shine; and we retain his rights and can try to coax him out of the booth if something happens to Dak.

Do we know if there is going to be a press conference on this?

If Tony actually quit mid-season, leaving a network hanging (which I can't see him ever doing), his time doing either would likely be at an end.

Happens a whole lot in the NBA side of coaching/broadcasting. Mark Jackson, Steve Kerr, Jeff Van Gundy, Doug Collins and a few others have alternated between coaching and broadcasting.

Tony wouldn't have anything to worry about. If he quit broadcasting mid-season to play QB again, he could get another analyst job when he was finished playing - if that's what he wanted to do.

Btw, Houston has themselves to blame.
Had they not played chicken and offered a 3 at beginning of free agency, I believe they could have gotten Romo and he would have played this year. But I believe that Romo saw that the market for him was not great and that factored into his decision. Have to feel wanted.

Makes me wonder if the owners' meeting was the final straw, possibly along with getting back into golf.

Why stay in the game at 37 if no one wants you enough to trade for you?

Well a trade would free us from contract and give us even more salary cap than release or retirement
No, all three free you of the remaining contract.
All bonus' paid in advance (when we kicked the contract can down the road earlier) are the only thing remaining cap wise...and that is an obligation regardless.

Good move. He has a family now. He has dealt with back injuries for a while now, along with other aliments(collarbone for example). Why risk taking another hit and suffering another back/ other injury?

Is it worth trying for a ring and possibly not being able to play with your kids without popping pain pills?
He loves Dallas and I wonder if he had second thoughts on playing for another franchise.

In an interview a year or two ago, Romo said how distasteful it would be for him to ever play his whole career in Dallas except for some final year to try to get a title elsewhere. He said it just wouldn't be the same going somewhere else than the only franchise he had ever played for...win a title..then go back home to Dallas...like a hired gun or something.

I guess he wasn't kidding, if this rumor is true.

he's turning down a lot of potential money to not play another year or two. Not that the money part surprises me one bit.

The Tony Romo saga has ended.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback has opted to retire, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. He is retiring in order to pursue opportunities in football broadcasting, Rapoport reported on Good Morning Football on Monday. Romo has received offers to work for CBS and Fox.

Around The NFL will have more on this story shortly.

Very happy I won't have to see him in another uniform. One of my favorite Cowboys I've ever watched. He's going to be a fantastic broadcaster.

Thanks for the memories Tony. Sorry we never gave you an Oline and a defense.

This is a release not necessarily a retire. Romo is already talking comeback in right scenario. I believe the booth job is temp play by Romo (who will be free to sign with anyone) and that we will see Romo playing for team by end of season. This was Romo only move

at the moment.

If Romo retires under contract, we have the right and a great argument to force him to pay back the signing bonus that we already gave him through the restructures.

I believe it's 10 million dollars.

The team is reportedly not going to do it.
Right. But like I said, that is unrelated to the cap. That is only related to Jerry's personal pocketbook.
