Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo Set To Retire

He did play a lousy bunch of golf this weekend. Maybe he felt after that some doubt that he could do another training camp.

As for the Schefter tweet, that is kind of a duh one. Of course he would be that. So was Aikman. He was flirting with the idea of playing with the Eagles and Chargers for a while.

Playing golf as an amateur is probably also a big factor as well.

Also, Damon Hack tweeted that he once asked Romo what he wanted to do when he retired and Romo said cover golf and the NFL for Sport's Illustrated.

If Dak goes down this year I expect Romo to put down the headset and come back for his chance to ride I to the sunset with a ring.

Sports is like life, the good guys don't always win.

Dude, I couldn't even imagine that storyline!

Good. The drama can end.
Good luck and thanks Tony. Now most importantly how does it affect the cap?
It doesn't affect anything the Cowboys are going to do. Not sure why everyone is so fixated on this

You honestly think, mid-season, that Tony would quit a lead broadcasting job, leave the network hanging, and then hop back on the field on his 3rd year removed from sustained football? Come on...

I didnt take Romo for a quitter. A little disappointing.

Not strange at all. Tony doesn't want to be traded. He wants to be released. This is nothing more than a tit for tat move. If Jerry actually releases him, he will be on a roster within a few weeks. I hope Jerry doesn't buy it or has an arrangement with Romo.
Retiring isn't going to force their hand into releasing him, so yes it is strange.

As base salaries are obviously not paid to retired or released players, the important parts here are the prorated amounts on each of the years remaining.

Romo has $19.6 million remaining of unamortized signing bonus. If he outright retires, that would accelerate onto the 2017 ledger, meaning the Cowboys would save $5.1 million of space on next year’s cap.

That would also clear up $25.2 million of 2018 space that is currently earmarked for Romo, and $23.7 million of similar 2019 space.

Financially speaking, that flexibility would be a boon for the Cowboys.

Well the report is that they are releasing him as well. Hopefully, they change their mind once again.

Best decision for his quality of life going forward and his Wife's sanity going forward as well.

Best Wishes to him. He gave it his all, and his body has paid the price over the years.

IMO, he will never will be truly appreciated by a majority of the Cowboys fan base.

lol I was talking about his whole career here. Led his team to 2 wild card wins. Pathetic. I'm just glad the drama is almost over.
I guess we need to cut Witten also. That guy has only gotten us 2 wildcard wins...and Sean Lee...that loser hasn't done anything for us... Tyron Smith...dude is cashing huge paychecks and hasn't won us crap...Dez Bryant? Nah.. trade his sorry but to the patriots for Chris Hogan...

Cut em all!!!!!

If Tony actually quit mid-season, leaving a network hanging (which I can't see him ever doing), his time doing either would likely be at an end.

I would think that would already be discussed before taking the job. That possibility is real and it's one he probably couldn't turn down. Aikman nearly did it and I don't think it would have blackballed him from covering games again.

Based on his interviews and what people have told me who know him personally, I actually don't think he will be good at all.

He's a more quiet, introverted person. That's not good for national media.

Many of the best public performers (speakers, actors, etc) are quiet, introverted people. Quiet or introverted has absolutely nothing to do with whether a person is effective in front of the public.
