I mentioned Mahomes in order for any reader to reply suggesting I was lessening his impact on the game. It is the OP's main contention that Mahomes' contribution outweighs anything that the defense did last night.
The defense did help win last night as well. Agreed, the defense scored on an easy gift turnover but it did happen. It was not a mirage. And it was neither Kansas City's offense nor Mahomes who tacked those points on the scoreboard.
It is my opinion, which may not be shared with many others, that the 'defense wins championships' analogy will always be applicable if-and-until a Super Bowl is decided by offense alone. No punts. No turnovers. No sacks. No safeties. No interceptions. No pass deflections. No tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Etc.
In other words, the phrase will remain acceptable for me if-and-until the National Football League converts to flag football. I mean, beyond the Pro Bowl that is. lol.
