True
But he's not a free agent. Once the tender is offered it protects the franchise in the short term-- other teams can't just offer him a contract (and he accept it) without fairly large compensation to Dallas.

Correct...

That's another valid point.

The challenge in all this is that based on all sorts of data that's out there, Dez has a window of being a truly elite, dominant WR for probably 3 more years.

NOW, that doesn't mean he's going to go to crap after that, because he won't. But he won't be a $15 mil per season guy either.

Say you paid him as being elite for 3 seasons...

Season 1: $15 mil
Season 2: $15 mil
Season 3: $15 mil

OK now his elite years are over with... now what?

If you want to do the goofy thing you continue to pay him $15 mil per season for another 4 seasons. That's $105 mil over 7 years.

But if you're paying him for what his actual worth is, it's probably more like:

Season 4: $10 mil
Season 5: $8 mil
Season 6: $6 mil
Season 7: $4 mil

That's $73 mil over 7 years.

This would make the most sense which is exactly why it won't happen lol

I don't think so either.

They sent Ware packing.

They didn't retain Murray.

There's a group of fans here that simply ignore the truth.

Then there is the case of all our FA's we let walk just a few months ago. Lots of evidence to support the position the Cowboys are going to take and more importantly - mean it.

Sam baker just got released after a like 4/44m type deal after 1 year. The numbers are fluid. It's all negotiation. The "he's worth X amount a year" talk is silly. They let Murray walk bc they will invest heavily in dez

12.8 million is paying for a good player. 17 million is paying too much for a good player. I don't think we are going to see that happen but who knows. Jerry sometimes does things I do not understand.

You can also add that they didn't make a huge trade offer to get Peterson and his contract.

But maybe I'm stubborn regarding Dez, but I think we sign him long term.
If there can be a compromise of 15-15.5 per year ave for 6 and 35 guaranteed.

cant any team try to sign dez to a contract now and if dallas don't meet the offer we get two first round picks and he goes to that team. I personally don't think many teams are going to pay a wr 17 million dollars as its been stated not many teams with a dominate wr have won or been to a superbowl I know its not good that all this is going on in the press Jason press conference tomorrow he will be asked lots of dez questions to me its a distraction for the team

That is the problem, we have absolutely no incentive to give him that kind of money when we can franchise him for $12.8M million this year, $15.4M million next year, and $18.4M 2 years from now (yes over that 17 mark, but all in all still less over the 3 years). Yea that means we won't have the tag next year, but looking at who we are set to lose, I don't see a lot of big names other than Hardy (who we "replaced" with Gregory in the draft, and I have heard might not be able to franchise anyway) and Crawford (who is good but not that good). Things are a bit more dicey 2 years from now, but Fredbeard will get a long term contract before then, and no one gives franchise tags to RBs even if Randle is great. The power is entirely on the Cowboys side, so Bryant has to come down a bit if he wants guaranteed cash, and stop threatening holdouts that might make the Cowboys afraid to give him a long term contract as he might do it again.

P.S. I am not saying I agree with the franchise tag, but it is there, and teams will use it whenever they see fit.

The two firsts basically make that impossible, no team will trade 2 firsts for one players anymore, plus we can still match.

I offer $15 a year on a take it or leave it basis.

That's my limit and if that is not good enough for Dez then I tag him twice and let him walk afterwards

Help me understand those franchise tag numbers and correct me if I'm wrong. But the franchise tag for Calvin, which would have came at the end of the 2012 season, would have been 120% of that season's base salary ($14 million) since his base salary surpasses the average of the top 5 WR's base salary ($9.4 million) for 2012. Wouldn't Calvin's franchise tag number be $15.680 million?

The Franchise Tag is set off of your Cap Hit, not your base salary. His cap hit in 2012 was over 21m, so I might have even missed a year.

He would have earned 18.5m, 26m and 31m for 2012-2014. That is 75m over 3 seasons. In comparison 48m over 8 years was bargain.

It is the same reason Suh was set to have a 26m Franchise Tag this year.

Those old rookie deals were really getting out of hand and DET got hit hard 3 years in a row with Stafford, Suh and CJohnson.

Dez' situation is a lot different and no one is using CJohnson's contract as a starting point. Even Larry Fitzgerald had to tear up his 15m a year deal and he was more like CJ than Dez.

BUFF just used 2 firsts to get Sammy Watkins. They traded a 2015 first to move up with CLE last year.

Granted they don't have to pay Watkins 15m+, but they did spend 2 firsts.

Since the draft is over, it would be a 2016 and 2017. For a team like NE it might be worth it. A couple late firsts for a top WR to match with Gronk, Edelman and Brady.
