Dez Contract Speculations

He is the heart and soul of this team.

To the posters suggesting we get two years out of him and move on....what is your reasoning???

I hope they sign Dez...today would be fine with me...but I don't think he is the heart and soul of the team.

Tony gets my vote for that.

Pats would pay Dez if they had one. Just like they paid hernandez and gronk big money. Just like they've paid a number of guys big money. They moved on from Welker and guys like wilfork because they were no longer worth their money. Sort of like we did with ware.

Please at least try and compare apples to apples.

Apples to Apples!!! isn't Gronk still on his rookie deal, often injured and last time I checked, Gronk and Hernendez are both tight ends, not receivers...Welker is a receiver, and Patriots rarely spend big money on receivers not because they can't find them but because the return on their money you pay them is NOT there....name the last five Elite receivers that led their teams to Superbowls... two play off games last year didn't Dez have a total of 7 catches in two games, not the game changer you think he is so you'd be paying big money on a decoy in your offense..... I'd put my money on the offensive and defensive lines, that's where you win games, not on over paid playoff decoy receivers...

Gronk signed a 6 year extension 3 years ago to become the highest paid tight end in football history.

Stopped reading.

I agree on the contract length and productivity.

As for the research; that dates back to the NFL for 20 years. With a few exceptions (Jerry Rice for example) the decline is sharp after 29. Why would think that only applied to Fitz and Calvin?
And again, I don't disagree that it just goes wit the turf when you write a longer contract.

This cuts both ways and explains why Dez knows this is real chance to cash in. The odds are very high that he won't be producing like a top 5 receiver in 3 years. So they want a 7 year deal vs maybe the 5 year deal the team would give him.

BTW, I'm one who's really surprised we don't have Dez signed long term.
I thought if we tagged anyone it would have been Murray...and that was a big if.

Wrong. They don't drop off at 29. They simply stop rising. In fact by your own research they don't drop off until after age 31. And are actually pretty stable through age 34. And i'd bet the guys who age the best aren't the speedsters...they are the big guys like Dez who have unbelievable hands and are beasts in the redzone. Thanks for agreeing with me that we should have signed Dez yesterday.

You make valid points about the whole production vs. age thing.

But it still come down to the amount of compensation... There's probably about a $4 mil per spread difference between the two camps.

Obviously the team just feel justified in giving Dez a "megatron" equal contract.

You don't know what Dez is asking for in negotiation. And all parties agree that the WR market is being reset. That's why Dez, DT, Green and Julio haven't signed massive extensions.

No we do not.

But if I had to guess, I would guess high.

the thing is I think they the cowboys are afraid of giving dez a huge contract I think they still don't trust him. I don't think they will giv e him a calvin Johnson type contract either, and also the wide receiver market is being reset but even if he don't get a deal by july 15 it wont do no good to hold out first game because they cant workon one until after the season. so he may miss lots of games he only has toplay 6 to get credit for the year.

If only that was the truth. Your prior posts seem to indicate you having an opinion without knowing any offers...reported or otherwise.

Nope... just offering a balance to opposing views. :)

Other than Dez, his representatives and the Cowboys braintrust... no one knows what's transpired.

You're welcome

Anyway, it looks like a steady decline begins after age 27 (Dez' age in mid 2015 season).
Good point on the actual "steep" decline not hitting until 34.

I'm sure the sample rate drops each year after the late 20s and is borderline non-existent by the early-mid 30s. And of course, any player not drafted or that has retired would not have fantasy stats.

A guy like Boldin would fit the physical brute longevity....though not a true match with Dez.

Many of the local media in DFW have said 11M to 12M average in regards to the offer. Most think that the Cowboys would make him the 2nd highest paid WR if he would negotiate reasonably and give up the quest to make Calvin Johnson money.. The current #2 WR contract is 12M average.

So the current number 2 contract is 12M and they want to start negotiation for Dez at 11M? When his franchise number is 13M? And his 2 year take home is 28M?

Well. Is it really Dez being unreasonable? Is DT being unreasonable? Julio? AJ? Etc?

Nope. Just a bunch of teams terrified of setting the market at WR.
