But he wants $17MM per year. That's already been reported. I think if he came in at $13MM per year with say $30-35MM guaranteed, the Cowboys would scramble to get the paperwork together.

I have yet to see any where but here that he is asking for 17 mill. I would ask who is reporting that and can you please provide a link because I have yet to find anything of that nature

I am a firm Dez supporter but he needs to leave the social media alone in regards to negotiations.

He looks stupid complaining about a lack of financial security from a deal that will pay him in 1 year more than 99% of people make in their lifetimes.

Professional athletes in general... and elite professional athletes in particular, look at long term deals with up front money as security. You can't blame Dez for feeling like all of the other athletes do, which is that playing on a one year deal doesn't give you the security of a multi-year deal.

Maybe you can shake your head at the state of professional sports contracts these day... but Dez is no different than all of them are.

He should probably get another 60 or 70 million before he retires, conservatively. When looking at it in that context, getting 13 million does indeed seem bad.

Yes but then he contradicts himself. Because if he's worried about security, then why the heck would you threaten to sit out games and cost yourself $8MM if the team calls your bluff?

maybe his thought process is security in regards to the possibility of experiencing a career threatening/ending injury while playing under a one year deal.

The other angle to this that doesn't get mentioned by those just quickly siding with Bryant.............

Bryant is responsible for the atmosphere surrounding his negotiations. I think most would agree that one hang up with regards to the organization just handing him a big check is that there are concerns with his off the field stuff. That has been reported in a few places for the past few months since the season ended. That there are still concerns with Bryant's off the field baggage. And let's be honest, these aren't myths about some of his issues. They aren't false. Even the whole Wal Mart situation that was overblown by PFT, fact is, it was his "crew" that caused the situation. That type of stuff turns people off. It was an issue with Vick to the point that he had to cut his "crew" out of his life. Iverson went through something similar. He eventually started to wise up and cut some of his crew back.

I want Bryant to remain a Cowboy. I also think he deserves to be paid a healthy sum. But I don't have a ton of sympathy for him and his cries for fairness and security when he's created a situation where a team still has some concerns because he can't seem to get his life totally in order off the field.

In other words, I'd bet a heavy sum if Bryant had a background like Larry Fitzgerald who was a good soldier off the field when he got in the NFL, the Cowboys wouldn't be so hesitant at this point.

I'm sure that is part of what he's looking at. If that is your concern, then maybe you look at taking a deal that is less money, more guaranteed. If he signed a deal for 11 with 40 guaranteed and his career ended tomorrow, then he would still be secured and the team would be out a lot off money. That's the other side of the coin. It's not as if there is risk on only one side of the issue. Both sides have risk here. It's a negotiation.

I have zero problems with any player asking for the moon. I may think that a certain money figure is ridiculous but the player cannot be faulted if a team pays what's demanded. It's economics, supply and demand. Likewise I have zero problems with any team exerting control over their salary cap. I used to but it is the nature of the beast and it will never change under the current CBA format.

Good or bad, all contract negotiations finalize at some point. Bryant's situation will work itself out as well. On a personal note, I care only that players do not publicly proclaim security, etc., as a negotiation tactic. Every athlete shares inherit risk playing any sport, especially those playing football. No amount of income will overcome that risk. It is a tactic that individuals like Terrell Owens used in the past. I'm on record for saying Bryant is a different player and better individual than Owens. I would hope Bryant does not make me a liar even within the context of this particular topic.

Earth to you. the problem is it's only one year. he wants a long term deal. why do you refuse to get it?

If he should make $60 to $70 million before retiring, and we assume he has a good 5 to 7 years left, then how is $13 million for 1 year a bad deal?

There are ways to insure against potential injury. He will be very fairly compensated this season if he is on the franchise number.

What part of "He looks stupid complaining about a lack of financial security from a deal that will pay him in 1 year more than 99% of people make in their lifetimes" do you not understand?

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, no. What do you think he would do? Put all his money in a mattress and take out $150k per year for the next 50 years?

If he could earn 5% (which is very conservative), he would make $390,000 per year every year for the rest of his life - and still have the $7.8 million left over.

This is assuming his life afterwards is perfect. No other expenses. No other emergency situations. A lengthy hospital stay for Him or someone his family will eat that up quickly.

Earth to you. It's only one year because of the contract demands. It would be more years if the contract demands were not 17 Million. I don't know how much he is going to be paid but it's not just one sided. If you want a long term contract then negotiate terms that are acceptable to both parties. If you want to get paid 17 Million a season, then don't cry about being offered the Tag, which is what the players agreed to.

Like my grandpa always said...its only worth what someone is willing to give you for it.

In otherwords, he isnt worth it and no one would give it to him.

Just like my boss wont give me $150k to do my current job...and I can whine and cry and stomp about it, but I am not worth it and not going to get it.

And, he plays freaking sports...he needs to get some gratefulness in his life. Sorry but I am tired of sports players acting like entitled kids. Its getting real old.

Yeah except someone would give it to him if he wasn't constrained by a system designed to protect owners.

Not arguing against the system but it is what it is.

So Dez is doing what he can. Withholding his services and not agreeing to a bad deal.

Your grandfather would agree with me.

It is not equivalent to a guy making 33K when his colleagues are making 100K.

It would be more like his highest paid colleague is getting 160K and he is getting 120K while the average is well below 100K. The only difference is that some of the other 120K colleagues have a guarantee for several more years while he only has a 1 year guarantee.

That's not how the math works since guaranteed money not annual salary is really what is important. 13m vs 40m. Who here amongst us would be happy getting a 3rd of what they are worth?

constrained? the cap is the average of the HIGHEST contracts. ala...no one is paying anyone else what he wants, and thus, logically, wouldnt pay him that either.

Your statement about a system designed to protect the owners is not how it works either. The system is negotiated and designed to protect both sides. I agree with your state above but if your going to be fair, then be fair.

Not really.

If his demands are $17MM and $50MM+ guaranteed and he holds firm on that. No one will sign him.

That is the problem, Teams are still trying to figure out the market rate for all these Top WR's....D Thomas, Julio Jones, AJ Green, DEZ they all can't make CJ ($100mil) money....The WR position has a lot of up and coming... primetime WRs that will want paid a kings ransom.... there is a CAP on the amount of money a team can spend..... In the Salary Cap era, its all about drafting good players because you can't pay them all what the want or deserve....
