Again. Players don't like the tag despite the "good pay"
So I disagree with what you first said when you argued the tag protects the players. The tag is a tool of owners.
But they do like the increase in revenues they received under the new agreement so it's all about negotiations. The simple truth of the matter is that contracts for a short period of time were over inflated to meet the negotiated increase in salaries every team had to reach. Now the market is beyond that and contracts are starting to normalize again. This is an expected and predictable outcome. Agents know this and players should know this. If you want to avoid the tag, then negotiate a deal that is acceptable to both parties. Don't just hang the club out to dry because of the tag. That's not reasonable.
As for the tag and how it protects the players, well, it actually does. It guarantees them, for at least a year, an average of the top 5 salaries at their position. They could be making a lot less so yes, it does provide protection to the players as well but to be perfectly clear, I never said the tag protects the players. I said the contract negotiated between the players and the owners (the CBA) was designed to protect both sides.
You can still disagree if you wish. I'm fine with it.
