Spencer came on after he got a chance to start. There is a distinct correlation there.

So when do we bench Witten to get this awesomeness on the field more?
Hey, show some respect. It's Martellus Norris to you.

So what you're saying is that that's the law? So would it be safe to assume that if we signed J.P. Losman that he'd be the next Steve Young simply because he just needed time to develop his talent?

Nobody ever though J.P. Losman had Steve Young's talent. Your post was a complete FAIL.

Exactly.

And I love having insurance policies all over the field, but I want to either:

A) Bolster our OL
B) Add in a safety with the chance to make this defense really special.
C) Add a receiving threat opposite of Miles.

Are you saying we should have just traded Spencer if he hadn't had the chance to start this season?

No TE plays like a LT. If one did, he would be converted to the more valuable position.

They already said they could put the weight on him and move him there if they had to.

Speaking of lack of foresight, you're the one wanting to keep a $8 million RB who offers nothing but blocking ability. By the way, you do realize that Witten isn't going anywhere until either a) his contract is up (2013) or b) he goes down with a career ending injury. Bennett's contract is up before Witten's contract is up, I guess we should pay Bennett like a starter to sit on the bench because of all of his "potential" when his contract is up right? By the way, due to the Miles Austin factor Bennett is going to be used a lot less due to the fact that we've moved away from the regular 2-TE set. If someone offers us a second round pick we'd be ******** to turn it down.

Some of you kids are too obsessed with what "might be" rather than what is. Damn this Madden generation.

Please find where I have said that.

You better go rewatch his carries before he was hurt last season. Dude was still a beast.

What do you actually thing you're going to get for Bennett? At absolute best, a very low second round pick, most likely a third or below.

A third round safety is going to make this defense special? I think not.

In the third round? Odds are very slim you will get a player that offers more receiving threat than Bennett already provides when the Cowboys split him out wide.

You didn't pay much attention to that draft. He was regularly compared to Kenny Stabler and Steve Young.

Not if you know feel strongly that "Pro Bowler" won't achieve that in Dallas.

Personally, I don't think Bennett mentally has what it takes to be what some people believe he can be. He would not be the first elite talent to be derailed by a ten cent brain.

Well as long as Dallas sticks to trying to be balanced than we are always going to pass out of run formations and use 2 TE's.

We throw a lot of formations at teams and Bennett adds a lot to that dynamic.

And there lies the problem, the guy cannot stay healthy. The guy is 26 and already looks like he's 31.

Question for you guys wanting to trade Bennett. If Witten goes down, do you truly believe Phillips can step in and take his place as a receiving weapon?

I think not. Could Bennett? Without question.

Disagree. I don't think Bennett could step in and do what Witten does.

He was a terrible route runner last season, and when he did manage to line up in the right spot and wind up in the same zip code of where he was supposed to be half the time he dropped the ball.

Phillips doesn't have the ability Bennett does, but if you are not where you are supposed to be or dropping the ball, what good is ability?

Would Bennett be better than Phillips? Maybe, if he gets his head out of his butt this offiseason. But he won't be in Witten's universe production wise unless he really turns into something he hasn't even pretended to be yet.

You act like he has done absolutely nothing. You do realize that he is one of the more productive SECOND TEs in the league right?

I believe I just read an article that puts him around #3 in the league in productivity for teams second TEs. Thats even with a down year compared to his previous year.

I would like to see this article you are referring to.

Just a quick glance shows that the following second or even third TEs were more productive than Martellus Bennett last year terms of receptions:

Donald Lee
Will Heller
Daniel Graham
Alge Crumpler
J.P. Foschi
Joel Dreessen
Dante Rosario
Delanie Walker
Daniel Fells
Zach Miller (Jacksonville)
Leonard Pope
Desmond Clark
Joey Haynos
Shawn Nelson
Daniel Coats
Jerremy Stevens

If Witten goes down, without question, I think he can produce 40-50 catches 700+ yards and 5-7 TDs this season.
So what makes you think this? Oh yes, that vaunted potential he has rarely shown as a professional. So let us just hang on for dear life and hope we do not have to find out.

How many teams run as many two TE sets as we do? 3? 4?

Awesome, well since you clearly have a far superior knowledge when it comes to players and how great they are going to be can I ask you a few questions? Bill Walsh and countless NFL scouts are below you.

So why was he so alarmingly unproductive last season?

Could it be the fact he did not run good routes and apply himself properly even when he could have been an option in the passing game?

Oh wait, someone said it earlier. He was just "bored". Poor Martellus.

i would deal barber but not MartyB. He has the talent to be a Pro Bowler for 10 years. You just don't give up on that kind of talent.

It is interesting how quickly we may give up on a player. Some take longer to mature, and I guess the question is, are we willing to wait because of his "potential?" I love MBIII, but think Choice and Jones can carry the load.
