Do you think Williams beats out Austin before the end of the year?

Thoughts? I've always been a fan of Williams, so I think he has a shot.

rookie receivers rarely have big impacts in their first year, usually takes three years to develop..

Have you actually watched him play? Or are you just reading about him?

Um, yes, yes I've seen him play. Have you? Because you're not actually making a point.

I understand the need for a WR to take the top off the D...and some day Williams may fit that bill.

But if Dallas was looking for a replacement for Austin, Keenan Allen was an awfully good one.

I think Williams will work out though.

No.

Let's see if he can even beat out Harris first, mkay?

2 different spots. Harris is a slot guy Williams is an outside WR not even competeing with one another.

He won't have to. He'll already be moving Miles to the slot. After that, Miles probably won't be here next season anyway.

This, sort of. He'll be getting snaps at wideout, with Austin in the slot. Not beating him out or taking reps, but giving us that outside speed that let's our slot guys and TEs take advantage of what the defense has to give to contain the downfield plays.

Allen has injury concerns. I don't want another oft injured receiver.

Austin's hamstrings will make sure Williams sees plenty of playing time...trust me.

Look, I'm not trying to hurt your feelings. The things you previously listed weren't exactly screaming endorsements of the guy, nor were they very indicative of his actual play... prototypical size and speed doesn't necessarily mean he's going to play like Hakeem Nicks... take Laurent Robinson for example. Prototypical size and better than prototypical speed-- didn't do much for him for the majority of his career.

Anyway, back on topic. I've read the scouting reports but I just don't see the speed with this guy. He seems 'clunky' for lack of a better term. He seems to be slow in and out of his breaks, doesn't possess breakaway speed, doesn't possess many skills running with the ball either. I'm not saying that he's awful, but I just don't see anything he does better than Austin or Bryant.

Maybe the slower speed of the big XII never necessitated the need to play at a higher level, but I just don't see it with Williams. Hope I'm wrong.

No.

Realistically, you hope Williams shows enough progress throughout the 2013 season to show that he can take over the #2 WR spot for the 2014 season, allowing the team to feel comfortable in cutting Austin and his contract next summer.

Doubt he'll have to. He wasn't drafted to be #4.

I would say Harris vs Williams may be fun to watch this training camp, but in all honesty the one that should probably be concerned is Miles Austin in 2014. Williams was drafted to line up opposite Dez and Harris can transition to the slot receiver with no issues. Miles has 6/1/14 cap casualty written all over him.

Right now I like the fact we go into this season with Dez, Miles, Williams and Harris along with some of the other young WR. I doubt GB fans complain about having all those targets for Rodgers but here people are more interested in getting rid of players.

The two scouting reports I saw on tape both said one of his biggest weaknesses and route running...tends to start slow and not finish routes. Also likes to drift. Can you imagine if Romo throws a pick and its because the WR isn't finishing the route? Its happened over the last year. I see what you're saying about his speed but I think, and this is again from reports...its not straight away speed but speed in traffic after catch. The videos show him outrunning guys when behind them but when he catches short passes he doesn't have a burst at times. It should make for good competition but I think he will need to some adjustment time to the NFL speed and game.

He may very well be the #2 WR at some point due to injuries. But Williams more likely will be competing against Harris for the #3 spot. If Williams wins that job, then he plays on the outside and Miles plays the slot in 3 WR formations. I think his primary role this year will be as a deep threat.

I don't think his primary role will be a deep threat(although he will have those opportunities) since that'll go more to Bryant with his emergence since Austin seems to have trouble locating the ball deep. I think he will be more the intermediate guy starting out with some deep looks but will most likely get the #3 spot from Harris and play on the outside opposite Bryant with Austin in the slot(when healthy) like you have already stated.

Matt Ryan didn't get drafted until 2008 which was Robinson's 2nd year(drafted 2007) then 09-10 he was in St. Louis before he came here in 2011. It's not like he had alot to work with before he got here even with his size and speed as far as QB and teams that he played for. Dallas was the first good team he was on, talent-wise, for him to be able to thrive.......then he went to the Jaguars(dumb mistake for him, really thought he'd come back since he thrived so well here with Romo) so yeah there's that...

I don't think so.

I think it will be Williams v. Harris for the third string, hopefully Williams beats him out and produces while making Harris better so that we can comfortably move on from Miles after we lock up Dez long term. If we get in a situation in which Dez continues to explode and wants a $100m contract that we can't afford we would be better off going the Revis route and trading him and keeping Williams/Austin/Harris. I am a big fan of Miles Austin, I wouldn't mind him spending his whole career with us if he is able to stop getting injured constantly. Heck he is worth the remainder of his contract if he remains producing at 1k yards, 6+ td's everyyear.

Before the hounds come I don't mean to assume that Dez Bryant is as arrogant as Revis nor to state that I would trade him for a 1st and a next year 3rd round picks but that if he that situation did arise that I wouldn't be against it. The Jets did make the right call although I think they could have traded him prior to his injury and gotten a lot more in return (probably 2 firsts and a 2nd, heck we might have made the trade prior to getting Claiborne and Carr.) If Dez rises to that level and doesn't get an injury 2 first round picks + a 2nd/3rd is probably the expected return and I would take it as opposed to tying up that much money (100m) in a non QB position. Only exception to that is an all-time great LT/LB.

Lot's of possibilities, every which one is solely speculation at this point.

No one is trading multiple first round picks and a 2nd for a corner.

As someone else mentioned, they don't play the same spot. Williams and Harris aren't competing. Harris is a slot receiver. Williams will be opposite Dez.

Coming off a major injury and wanting a near $100m contracting they got a 1st round pick and a 3rd.

Prior to the injury when he was drawing comparisons to Deion Sanders left and right and in a league where a 31 year old Carson Palmer draws near two first round picks he could have easily gotten 2 firsts.

We traded a 1st and a 3rd for Roy freakin' Williams, we traded 2 firsts for... Joey Galloway.

It's possible.

It's possible.

You mean the $100 million dollar contract that has ZERO guaranteed money?

The only position that warrants multiple first round picks plus more is quarterback.

Even though they don't play the same spot, they are competing. The difference is that if Williams wins, then Miles moves inside in three WR sets.
