I was at the game last night. He's terrible. Wide open guys, easy check downs, all missed.

Time to end the experiment.

Please lord let our staff realease this player........the drop off from Romo to this guy made me sick trying to pull for our offense which was offensive.

I think the San Diego disaster really crushed Vaughn's confidence. He does look terrible.

Noway he clears waivers, we can't afford to lose the next Matt Moore with an even higher ceiling. Please tell me Showers isn't getting cut. Weeden and Dummmarse suck.

He very easily could clear waivers, imo.

Nothing at all like the Matt Moore situation. Moore looked good and not like a project. We risked it and lost.

They could risk it and "lose" with Showers, but I think he chances of not getting picked up are better.
Now if he is outstanding in the final preseason game, all bets off.

Vaughn was a FAN favorite with a few last summer rivaling the drooling many did over Alex Tanney the previous summer. Every summer the Cowboys add a young QB that seems to catch the fancy of a few then they go on to lay an egg the following summer.

All bets are off anyway, someone would want him as a STs Ace on coverage at least. Leading STs tackler and best back up QB on the team, it would be a huge mistake to cut him.

He needs more experience but Jamiell Showers reminds me of an unpolished, young and stronger Tony Romo, albeit with much less accuracy.

There are claims in Chicago that the Bears may not play Shane Carden at all in the preseason and just stash him on the PC. They have Cutler

A guy that has not played special teams since middle school and just started doing it 3 weeks ago is now an NFL Special Teams Ace? He's better than guys that have been tackling people for their entire college career? He's better than guys like McCray that have made a living for several years now just playing special teams?

I would estimate that there is a 99.99999 percent chance that he does clear waivers.

I agree. People here tend to overvalue marginal players. If he doesn't clear waivers, there is probably an additional 99.99999 percent chance that his career amounts to little.

I didn't watch the game, but read many of the comments about how poorly Vaughn played last night.

So many are hoping against hope that we can develop the next Tony Romo. I'm not sure lightning strikes twice.

In comparison, how was Tony Romo is his second year with us? We had QC, Vinny T, and Drew Hensen at QB. So obviously, Romo didn't get any in-season playing time. But how did he play in the pre-season.

My first recollection of Tony Romo was during the 2005 preseason where he looked really sharp ... but so did Drew Bleedslow. But that was Tony's 4th year. Will Vaughn make it to his 4th year???

My guess is our backup QB is not on this roster yet. There are 3rd/4th string QBs on other rosters that are better than anything we are fielding at this point.

Vaughn is surely the one most upset about his performance. He just took a pay cut of close to $400K if he goes from the 53 ($510K salary) to the PS ($6K/week) for the year. And it just might be that he won't even be invited to the PS.

Early in camp, there were reports that Vaughn did not look good. He went backwards for some reason this year. For some reason, he has been staying in the pocket more this year than last year IIRC. I don't know if he has been told to do that or it is his decision. Maybe the team wants to see if he can make his proper reads and stay poised in the pocket under pressure rather than just bail ASAP.

This answers my question that I asked in the game thread. That is, were the receivers simply not getting open/separation or was he just not seeing the field and trusting what he was seeing. Thanks for the report.

He looked like a slow gun fighter stuck in Ground Hog Day...who continually slowly drew his gun from it's holster and ended up planted on the carpet.

I don't remember Tony Romo having a good pre-season in 2004.

I'd like to see Dustin Vaughan develop, but becoming an actual #2 would be more than fine with me.

Vaughan hasn't looked good the last two games and that brings his roster status into question.

There's so much that goes into QB evaluation, the pre-season games really aren't of great concern to me.

How is Vaughan wired? Does he take command in the huddle? Does he take coaching? Do teammates respond to him? What's he like in meetings and the film room?

There's all these things we just know next to nothing about that factor in.

What is known is the team had no intention of keeping three QBs last season and Vaughan forced then to do so.

More impressive than that, Vaughan managed to stay on the 53 the entire season.

That's no easy thing for an undrafted player in a luxury position on a roster that is constantly changing.

But has he progressed enough in year two to retain that spot?

My eyes say no at this point, but what do the coaches and front office truly think?

The real question is, who are we going to lose if Vaughan is kept?

Jameill Showers? A 6th WR (A.J. Jenkins)?

An 11th DL (Terrell McClain or Ken Bishop)?

A 7th LB (Jasper Brinkley or Keith Smith)?

A 10th DB (right now I have 9 including Danny McCray, who is churnable)?

The only player I really like out of that group is Ken Bishop, and I'm keeping him over Terrell McClain in my mock 53 because of the latter's injury issues.

I don't know if Vaughan will make the cut this year or not (or how long he'll last if he does make the initial 53).

And maybe there will be a surprise or two when the cuts start getting announced, but the roster looks pretty set to my eyes.
