TRMM is the Boondock Saints based off the book by the same name?

Can you provide me with a link to the book? I'm having trouble finding anything on it.

As far as I know, the script was an original one by the first-time writer/director, and if there is a book by the same name it's probably a coincidence.

Way to dig up an old thread. :laugh2:

This was a surprisingly good movie. I saw the trailer a couple of times but thought nothing of it. My wife and I later rented it at Blockbuster and found it hilarious! Very quirky style, but never boring.

I added it to my Netflix Queue back in January, and it finally made it's way to the top last week.

When I finally watched it, I was trying to remember how I put it on my queue in the first place, and then I remembered this thread, so I figured I'd dig it's old bones up. :D

One of my favorite Netflix picks so far has been Pan's Labrynith... another foreign film, but very good.

My wife really wants to see that. I've only heard good things about it.

We have a lot of movies we've bought that we haven't even got around to watching yet, but it's somewhere in line when we get around to it.

Boondock Saints is another movie I'd highly recommend, more in the vein of Tarantino/Guy Ritchie crime movies, about two Irish brothers who get involved with the Russian mob and decide to clean the streets of Boston. Great supporting role by Willem Dafoe.

I've been recently looking for past movies I might have missed over the years and I rented this one. I absolutely loved it. Dafoe was great.

I've been looking for Shichinin no samurai to watch next but I can never seem to find it.

Seven Samurai is a classic. It's been remade and remade again in other movies (Magnificent Seven), but I believe it was a remake itself when it came out. I first saw it with a friend years ago, but that was when Blockbuster still carried old movies.

Saving Silverman...Jack Black and Steve Zahn are freaking hilarious in that one.

Steve Zahn is awesome and has the ability to carry what would without him be mundane movies (see Joy Ride).

Looking at some of the movies mentioned here, I'd think this thread was for overrated movies, not underrated.

Yeah, but he was even funny in Aliens.

Animal House tops my list of best comedies

Ya have to include "Airplane" in any list of top comedies.

Other good Flicks:

Office Space
  • Go
  • PCU
  • 12 Monkeys
  • Return of the Living Dead (If you really loved me, you'd let me eat your brains!)
  • Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Life of Brian and Meaning of Life as well)
  • Army of Darkness (see my avatar)
  • Caddyshack (of course)
  • Deathrace 2000 (Sly Stallone's best performance)
  • Blow
  • Kentucky Fried Movie (predecessor to Airplane)
  • True Romance (written, but not directed by Tarantino)

Anything with Bruce Campbell in it is worth watching, in my opinion.

Gardens of Stone... James Caan, James Earl Jones, DB Sweeney, Angelica Huston... set at Arlington National Cemetery, the Old Guard, assigned to the burial detail, back during the Vietnam War... a powerful look at the times, it rings true with what I remember from back then...

Leap of Faith... Steve Martin, Debra Winger, Liam Neeson, Meat Loaf... Martin plays a cynical traveling evangelist, a good old-fashioned, honest to Gawd revival preacher... the music is brilliant, Steve is brilliant... it was something different for him, some moments of comedy but basically a straight drama...

I'll probably think of others, but those are the first two that come to mind...

Sideways, Garden State, Detroit Rock City, Walk the Line, Traffic, Blow, Jackie Brown, We Were Soldiers, Catch me if you can, Mystic River, Leaving Las Vegas, Clerks, Chasing Amy, Reservoir Dogs.........

just some of my favorites I think were underrated.

Couldn't agree more about "We Were Soldiers"... I really enjoyed Sam Elliott as the gruff old Sergeant Major... I also found the scenes of the Colonel's wife back home taking over the job of delivering the messages notifying spouses that their soldiers had been killed to be compelling...

Kiss of Death... Nicholas Cage, Helen Hunt (briefly), David Caruso, Samuel Jackson... Cage made a great psycho, Caruso is one of my favorites... a really good gangster movie, the scene where Cage and his crew put on rain slickers before beating a guy to death was both funny and scary...

For those that enjoy the likes of 40 Year Old Virgin, you need to check out Grandma's Boy...absolutely ridiculous.

One of the all-time great movie lines:

"My grandma drank my pot"...

Quick show of hands here-- how many of have not known a Dante in your life?? For that matter, how many of you WERE Dante, in another life??

One of the Batman topics reminded me..

See The Machinist, thats a clever and wildly original film that not many people appreciate.

Another one is Layercake, which has Daniel Craig as the star. Another creative and interesting story that doesnt get the recognition it deserves.

I agree with Godfather one and two...three was just terrible, I actually liked the second one the best.. I also like Pulp Fiction (duh). What about goodfellas?

Shogun - Love the book more though, which is usually the case.

Band of Brothers
Saving Private Ryan
The Great Escape
Kelly's Heroes
The Dirty Dozen
The Devils Bridgade
Where Eagles Dare
(what can I say, I love WWII movies)

Little Big Man

Amadeus

Ok that is over 10:laugh1:

1-- Braveheart-- the best movie ever
2-- Scarface-- the best gangster movie ever, Pacino was beyond brilliant... the chainsaw scene in the motel bathroom is still scary to me...
3-- Cool Hand Luke-- the best old movie ever...
4-- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid... the second best ever...
5-- Heat-- Pacino, DeNiro, Kilmer... this one gives a good THX sound system a real workout...
6-- Mystery, Alaska (which should be on my underrated list as well, but having mentioned it once, there's no need to bring it up again)
7-- Tin Cup-- the best golf comedy ever, great soundtrack too...
8-- Leap of Faith (already mentioned as one of my underrateds)
9-- We Were Soldiers (another of my underrateds)-- the best war movie ever...
10-- Twister-- loved the special effects, loved the camaraderie of the crew... another movie that really lets you enjoy a THX sound system...
11-- Casino-- the second best gangster movie ever, I can never get enough of watching Joe Pesci get beat to death... and I never fail to laugh at the infamous torture scene with the guy's head in the vice...
12-- Silverado-- needed a western on the list, and I always enjoy catching this one when it's on one of the premium channels...

Hey, if you can cheat, I can too...

Goodfellas begs to differ.

But honestly, I see too many films that were high grossing and that a TON of people liked on these lists. Lets get creative, I dont want to get recommendations about movies I have allready seen.

Another movie is Glory Road about a basketball team...I found it very good.

"About a basketball team"??

Remind me not to hire you to write PR for any movie I might make... you might mention that it was the 1966 Texas Western Miners, the true story of how they came from literally nowhere to win the NCAA championship... legendary coach Don "Bear" Haskins became legendary that day, simply by starting an all-black starting five (and the only two reserves who played were black too) against Adolph Rupp's all-white powerhouse University of Kentucky team...

Not that I'm biased, or anything... most folks don't realize that Haskins had a cameo role in that one, he played a gas station jockey filling the tank of an assistant coach's car one night as that assistant called back to El Paso to report on his recruiting trip... had one line, was dressed in overalls... that really was the Bear...

Crossroads...Ralph Machio, Joe Seneca and Steve Vai at the very end. I only give the cast because there is some chick flick with the same name.

Hey, I liked that one too... Ry Cooder actually did most of the guitar work that Macchio was supposedly playing... there was some GOOD Delta blues in that one...
