One positive thing I have heard lately from Wilbon (Washington media) was that Turner is a classy guy. He (Wilbon)mdidn't discuss Turner's qualifications as a coach but clearly some in the business view him quite differetly than has been portrayed here.

The assassination campaign continues from the ABN crowd.
You can be classy and still suck as a HC.

Seems Norv's been able to accomplish that. He should've worked harder towards being classy and a good HC.

Think of it in the classic good cop/bad cop. Dungy's good cop is successful because Polian is a jerk and is willing to be the jerk. Turner's good cop didn't work because there wasn't a bad cop in either of his previous situations.

Jerry Jones would be a much more effective bad cop to Turner than he was the good cop to Parcells.

Hey, you can use whatever works to make a Norv hire palatable.

I just can't dig that deep.

I agree with this and it sums up my reservations concerning Turner as HC. The coordinators MUST be able to maintain the discipline necessary under Turner. The whole setup of the coaching staff needs to minimze Norv's known weaknesses and permit him to use his known strengths.

Norv Turner = false hope.

Hes the king of allowing other teams to comeback in the 4rth quarter. The King of all blunders.

Some coaches get their point accross in a quiet demeanor like Dungy. But Norv is lazy and careless when it comes to player management. Hes so much into the Xs and Os that most of the time he never gave a damn about whats going on with the players.

hahahahahaha the word false hope, and having a name like mark brunell. thats amazing

I'm not high on Turner myself, but I just wanted to touch on this Jerry Rice quote. First off, Jerry Rice only played with Turner 6* games before going to Seattle and had a total of 5 catches with the Silver and Black that year*. He was upset because he was no longer the focus.

When he went to Seattle, he talked Steve Largent into unretiring his jersey number so he could wear it for all of 25 receptions in 13 games. To me, sounds like a selfish guy at the end of his career, but that's just me.

Turner inherited a team that had gone from 11-5 and the Superbowl to 4-12 in the old folks home. They were on the wrong side of old and decrepet when he took over.

I just don't want to gamble on it just being poor talent to work with.

Edit*

He may well have been a bitter guy at that point, but are you suggesting he was so bitter he fabricated the stuff about Charles Woodson and others out of whole cloth?

I suppose it's possible ... but it's consistent with the things that leaked out of Washington's locker room over the years. The sense by the time he finally got fired was that he'd long since "lost" the locker room and the inmates were running the asylum. That's not based on just a couple of incidents or rumors, it's based on years worth. Generally, where there's a whole lot of smoke ...

Again, Norv was (and I assume still is) a VERY classy guy. I doubt you'll find anyone in the industry or any fan of one of his teams to dispute that. Personally, I got to meet him at training campone summer and found him to be humble, engaged and sincerely friendly. The problem seems to have been that that personna followed him into the locker room, a good thing in general ... but when a firmer hand was required, as it always is at some point in professional sports, he simply didn't have it in him.

The mantra among Skins fans back then was that the team had no soul. That it lacked leadership. That when punched in the mouth, it didn't always seem disposed to fight back. If it's true that a football team takes on the personality of its head coach ...

Basically all I am saying is that Rice requested to be traded because Turner started taking a 40 year old receiver out of the gameplan. Rice made comments at the time that he was not told that his role was going to be dimished and wanted to be traded to a team that would give him more playing time. He went 3 games without a reception and was done. He could have said anything at that point, not that he would. The fact that he would convince Steve Largent to unretire his number just so the legendary Rice could wear his number shows that he is capable of being greedy and prideful. Would he then point fingers at Turner, who knows.

Edit: I'm not saying that Rice disrespected Largent because Rice puts Largent on a large pedestal all the time in interviews etc. but I am saying that he needed to have his old number because he wanted to go out on top in his own time, but Turner was doing it for him.

Im not quite so sure that i really care what Westbrook and Rice have to say about Turner and i really am pondering what significance Robiskie and Drasner's comments have.

As has been mentioned before Rice hated Turner because he had the guts to do what Marriucci never could do and made Porter the primary receiver. The following season both Moss and Porter played problem free for Turner and it was only after Turner left that those two started witht he holdouts and talking of not being respected.

Charles Woodson hearsay from Rice? Give me a friggin break. Woodson was/is one of Davis' favorites and its Davis' culture that causes these issues not Turner's.

That basically leaves Kang and Sims comments as having any credibility. First thing you need to do is put them into context. This was right after Turner was fired in the middle of the season because Snyder did not have the guts to do what he wanted to do. The press new he was a lame duck, the coaches knew that he was a lameduck.

What exactly do you do when your boss who is to be fired at the end of the quarter tells you to do something you dont want to do? Whats he going to do fire you?

Make no mistake, Jerry Porter apparently likes the man. Here is where he says in reference to Turner's firing, ""Everyone knew the history," said Raiders receiver Jerry Porter. "It was unjust."

It should be no coincidence that the following season Porter refused to play for the Raiders anymore.

And I do not believe that Turner's time in Washington was fairly represented. His first two seasons there he went 9-23 in the rebuilding process. Following those two seasons he went 40-36-1. This also despite Snyder's first two years, the first of which he figured fantasy football can work just like the real thing and the second where Turner was hung out to dry.

Snyders first year was Norvs best year in Washington, and his second year the Skins lost something like 6 games in a row after a decent start. Hung out to dry....right. Thanks for playing.

I said his last year he was hung out to dry. And yeah he wsa hung out to dry. Snyder decided the previous year to ditch Trent Green and then he brought in Jeff George. When Turner wouldnt go along with George, Snyder undermined him.

Of those 6 straight losses 4 were under Robiskie.

Thanks for demonstrating reading skills.

That was Snyders second year. Snyder bought them in May of 99, they won they division in December of 99, Turner was fired in December 2000 after a long losing streak . Get a clue before you start talking...please.

Or it could have been 7 straight years of ineptitude that pushed management over the edge.

i revised my post as i misread your the first time go read it and im well aware of the timeline.

snyder in his second year decided that it was alright to start meddling. you are aware that most of those losses were on the kicking game and there is a famous story of snyder saying it had to be easy to kick field goals and was shanking kicks with casserly holding.

he wanted jeff george and turner didnt so snyder let everyone know that turner was out of favor. his ego couldnt get him to accept that thte kicking game and not his guy was the problem.

Sure ignore the entire George scenario which was well documented.

he won three games the first year and six the next. the remainging record was 40-36-1.

Sorry a winning record after rebuilding is not ineptitude. His missing on Shuler was his biggest downfall but to his credit he made something out of both Frerrotte and Johnson.

Im not saying he was god at washington by any means but your mindless hyperbole is neither fair nor true.

Norv was famous for losing the close games in Washington, blaming the kicking game is par for the course. Norv was as much a part of the problem as anyone. 1 playoff appearance in 7 years, he was lucky Snyder diddnt fire him on the spot the day the team was bought.

Trying to claim that his record was only 40-36-1 is a prime example of cherry picking stats to try to prove your point.

1 playoff win or appearance in 7 years as a head coach is ineptitude.
