Seriously, you can't turn around and block a guy who is in pursuit of a runner? That's a head scratcher.

A receiver can't circle back against the grain anymore and coldcock someone. It is a rule change.
I think it came about because Hines Ward was an expert at it and too many injuries were happening. He had some crushing hits.

I'm not sure, but it may even apply to special teams plays.
Not saying I agree or disagree with th rule, but it there as of this year (or maybe last year).

I thought they could still make crack back blocks but just can't hit the defender low or high.

Surely the NFL would not want player safety rules to be interpreted as it was in this instance... One player led with the crown of his helmet in a violent blindside hit to the head, but they flagged the player who lightly pushes... It's nonsense...

I think the reason this block was illegal probably has to do with a rule change 6-7 years back after Warren Sapp did the same thing to Chad Clifton after a tampa bay int. Sapp destroyed Clifton who was in a defenseless position about 20 yards away from the ball. Clifton I think suffered some serious injuries but did return the following season. I'm pretty sure a rule change was instituted some time after the play occured (think it happened in 2002 when TB won the Sb).

The difference here was the Lee was close to the ball and in pursuit. I'm not sure what the rule is exactly but I seem to remember a rule change being instituted after the Sapp/Clifton play regarding a defenseless player.

Didn't Sapp go after Clifton's legs or ankles. Sapp's hit on Clifton was more malicious I believe, I can't remember.

Find a new board to post on. There are too many people here that know what they are talking about.

Maybe in circle time the teacher will let you say dumb stuff, but you will get called on it here.

Illegal block -- probably.

Dirty? Heck no. I didn't see one iota of dirty in that block.
Lowering his head to spear him in the face isn't dirty?

LOL, your quite the emotional one. First of all it was a question to all the knowledgeable people here and not a statement.

Maybe in circle time the teacher can enlighten the refs because obviously they are stupid too.

I'm sorry. My comment was uncalled for. I should not take my frustrations out on fellow fans.

It's a textbook penalty under the new and revised rules effective May 2012.

"The foul is forcibly hitting the defenseless player's head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, or shoulder, regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him; and lowering the head and making forcible contact with the top/crown or forehead 'hairline' parts of the helmet against any part of the defenseless player's body

looks legal to me, could be a blindside it-- not sure those are still legal. The 15 yard penalty for the push was ridiculous. The replacemnt refs have to go. They as a group had a very-very bad day yesterday.

 That looks legal to you? A guy's helmet right underneath the other guy's chin. No that's not legal.

in the past that was the stick of the night and on the yearly Greatest "Hits" video put out by the league. So yeah, it is illegal now. But to be fair so was the late push going out of bounds.

The block was illegal but I don't think it was dirty.
