Coach, I will watch this season as I have for many years since I stopped letting the results of Cowboys games dictate my emotional well being in the 1980s. And I also keep a very pragmatic approach to any Cowboys player. I just want to win and whoever gives us the best chance to win is who I want playing.
One of the many intriguing parts of the QB position in Dallas is how much our fan base puts the success or failure of the entire team solely on the back of the signal caller. That goes all the way back to Dandy Don Meredith, who although he had flaws was surely good enough to win a championship. But the total team wasn’t good enough until 2 or 3 years after Dandy retired. Of course having Roger was big too, lol.
But whatever anyone thinks of Dak’s ability to lead this team, (I happen to think he’s good enough to win playoff games with the right support) unless this FO drafts or acquires another QB with the skill and upside to replace and/or improve what we’ve had with Dak, it doesn’t matter. Currently, there is no QB on this roster that gives us a better chance.
And sadly, for whatever reason, Jerry is averse to drafting a QB early in the draft with a QB on the roster he feels is a good enough starter. THAT is not a good policy in my view. Look at what the pats did even when they had Brady- they still drafted QBs as early as round 2. The pack drafted Rodgers in the first round in 2005, and he was a backup to Brett Favre for 3 seasons before starting. Not drafting QBs often is a mistake IMO. You never know when you might find gold.
As to whether Dak gets an extension or not, unless we acquire a realistic heir apparent, what choice does this team have? Jerry hates to tank to rebuild. If we don’t draft a really good QB or sign one in FA (won’t happen) that could realistically compete with Dak, why would we expect this team to go in a different direction at QB?
