If you are a defensive player, do you target Rodgers' calf?

Do you target rodgers calf?

I would. It would definitely be in my mind when tackling him, at the bottom of a pile, whatever the situation may be. I'm not saying do anything that could draw a flag, but between the whistles, go after it. This is nothing mew, guys have been going for romo's back. It's our turn, stakes are too high not to test that calf.

Sounds like you're hoping the Cowboys pull a Suh.

So, no.

We don't play for Buddy Ryan. Concentrate on plAying your best football and individual matchups not worrying about someone else's calf for crying out loud.

Can't even imagine the tears and crying this place would go through if teams targeted Tony's back.
You play to win by all means necessary. But don't play cheap.

It depends on what you mean by target. If I have a clean shot on Rodgers and the closest part of his body is his torso than his calf, I'm going to hit him at the torso. I'm not going to purposely drop to his calf to tackle him and let him complete the pass. That's stupid.

But ... if I get to wrap him up on a sack, and it's a continuous motion play, I'm going to bear hug him and put my full weight on his body towards his calf and make support his weight on his calf.

I don't have any problems with a team targeting Tony's back and long as it's not a cheap shot and it's within the rules. If they bear hug him and put their full weight on him to where his back feels the brunt of that, that's perfectly within the rules. I may not like it as a Cowboy fan, but I'm not going to be calling it a cheap shot.

That's why I said "Target" I think targeting a players injury puts players in the same class as Suh. Cheap.

I guess I needed clarification on what "target" means to each person. What Suh did was OUTSIDE of the rules. If Suh had wrapped Rodgers up on a sack then slide down to his calf in a continuous motion, and Rodgers hurts his calf, I wouldn't consider that "targeting." It happens within the play.
And, really, all players do that. If a player has a hurt shoulder, a defender is going to try to "target" that shoulder. Not outside the rules of the game, like Suh did. But within the rules of the game. If I know a quarterback just hurt his throwing arm, I'm going after that arm - LEGALLY. But the play comes first. If I can sack him while on the ground before he throws the ball, I'm not going to jump back to my feet and sack him by pulling his hurt arm. He may have gotten the pass off by then.

The situation dictates how I "target" him, but always within the rules and as not to hurt my team with a stupid, indefensible penalty.

The way I read the OP he means target as in extend the injury if that makes sense. Rodgers is playing hurt so if it gets worse that's on him.
But to go after his calf by going low when you don't need to is cheap in my book. Like some one trying to drive an elbow or knee in Romos back every chance they get. I haven't seen any one do that to Romo.

Well, it's my understanding that you can't target a player below the knees anyway. So if a player does that, it's likely going to be a penalty. You can tackle him around the knees, but if you do so, that means you're probably on the ground anyway, having been knocked down by an offensive lineman. And that essentially means you got whipped anyway.

There's really no way to injure Rodgers other than tackling him legally and letting the chips fall where they may.

But, no, I don't favor cheap shots.

You would probably cause his calf more harm chasing him then actually tackling him but he would probably just throw it away or go down...

Agree. Anything to create pressure/torque on the calf should cause him to be off, but also he's got the arm strength to still deliver the ball.

That play where he is falling down with the injury is a great example of that.

That said the probability of that being repeated over and over is low....

Send corners and LB's after him..

I pressure him early and often. I make him run and run and run. I hit him high. I knock him down. I make him use that hurt calf as much as possible in the 1st half........He will eventually have to wear down.

Also, I control the clock on offense, to make him stand around in the cold and really hurt the effectiveness of the leg.

But, I don't sweep the leg, Johnny. Just as I don't want anyone trying to hurt Romo's back.

You people are as bad as Suh. Why can't you just play football and beat the guy you line up against.

I think it was Chris Carter who was saying that todays players don't have respect for the game or their opponent when talking about Suh.

We can't beat them, so lets injure them..

Think for a minute.

Do you want the Cowboys to win the SB on questionable calls, beating teams with limping stars, and teams over their head like the Panthers?

In the 60's and 70's Cowboy haters were pointing out they had an easier time getting to the big game compared to the AFC.

Let them lose giving us their best shot.

Targeting the leg isn't going to do anything to his calf anyway. You just want to flush him out of the pocket and make him run. It's going to be cold and the calf isn't going to respond well to that.

Making him really uncomfortable isn't 'targeting'...

And what makes Chris Carter an idiot?
His opinions. I haven't met one person that thinks cris carter is an insightful analyst.

"Calvin Johnson, he’s very, very good at Madden and Tecmo Bowl or whatever they’re playing now. But on film, when I watch film, and I break down the film, he’s not to the point of these guys yet...We’re trying to determine greatness and impact on the NFL game. Calvin Johnson, you don’t have to double-team him to take him out of the game"

I want them to win the superbowl. Period. I don't care one bit if there are questionable calls or what players are hurt. I just want them to win it. It's been so long, why would you care how it's done? Winning the superbowl means something. I'll still take it if an opposing qb gets knocked out. It won't make it any less joyful.

Are any of these "one persons" NFL players? NFL coaches? Or just average Joes? I've found his comments very insightful, particularly as he explains coverages and insights into what makes a good wide receiver.
