Is it just me that believes McFadden is starting RB?

1.Is it just me that believes McFadden is starting RB?

2. How did he really turn out? Do we honestly know?

3. He is still young enough to be feature rb for us so why not?

I am posting this thread because I would like to know what people really think about him as a player?

Real deal answers. Backed up with real info and serious analysis?

Thanks

I don't believe the other pin has dropped at the RB position. I believe McFadden is going to be part of a two pronged approach @ RB this year.

If the Cowboys have any ideas about McFadden being the starting RB as of right now just cancel the season. I'm not arguing that the guy doesn't have upside or that he was a bad signing. He's just a total flier and should be treated and thought of as such.

You could argue that right now we exchanged backs that are the same. Production-wise.

DMF could easily pile up yardage behind this line. As Murray did.
Up until last year both had injuries and missed games.
Both played in every game last year. I know DMF only started 12 games but he was in all 16.

If it wasn't a contract year then Murray probably sits out a game or two last year. Contract years do wonders.

In addition to both being DM's.
On the face of it we can have same production as we did last year with DMF and Randle/Williams or whoever.

This is interesting. This is the info I am looking for.

Yes, but the worry with McFadden is he didn't look good as other journeyman type RBs on the Raiders over a fairly long duration:
  • In 2014 Latavius Murray (5.2 ypc) averaged nearly 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.4 ypc)
  • In 2013 Rashard Jennings rushed for twice as many yards and 1.2 yards more per carry (4.5 vs 3.3)
  • In 2012 Marcel Reese (4.6 ypc) and Mike Goodson (6.3 ypc) collectively average 2 yards more per carry than McFadden (3.3 ypc)

Ok, so there is some concern.

Just wait and see, that the only thing we can do.
Let's not start putting winner and loser labels after the first week of free agency.
Several years back Washington was declared the big winner after they inked Haynesworth to big $$$.
How did that work?
How about Greg Jennings as a Viking?...or Mike Wallace as a Dolphin?
Those were positions of need for those teams, they threw money at it and look how it turned out.
Settle down, ladies and gents...let's wait see how things play out.
Draft day is coming too.Needs will be addressed too.

Unless we sign Peterson it's going to be open competition.

If everyone plays their best I can't see anyone outplaying McFadden unless we draft Gurley.

Agreed. Another side to this is that if Dallas can improve it's defense, it may not need a starting RB that carries the ball almost 400 times... or even 300.

If he stays healthy for 16 games he will surpass 1500 yards...my bold prediction for the week of St. Patties Day :)

Can someone explain to me how latavius murray is a journeymen?

He was not. That was his first season. Even if he hadnt been on the IR all of his first season, it would still have been completely normal for him to just be hitting his stride as a pro in his second year.

I think what is going on is you have a contingent that feels that Williams can be the starting RB, but they are not quite sure about his health based on his history and they are probably some doubters about his blitz pickup skills. Then there is likely a contingent that thinks Randle can start, but there is doubts about his off-the-field stuff and his explosiveness. Then there is probably a contingent, probably led by Jerry, that really likes McFadden, but there is doubts about how much tread is left on the tire and if he can stay healthy.

I see it mostly as a 2-way battle right now between Williams and McFadden and they'll let them battle it out. But between the 3, the cap hit is super low and there is a small cap penalty if they have to release any one of them.

To me, this is how you handle a situation like this. Provide competition and a real battle and let the best running back win.

Honestly, I am not really seeing the downside to this sign. He's guaranteed 200K. That's it. I mean, if he doesn't make it out of camp, then we are on the hook for a very small amount of money. I'd expect that by the time camp is over, we will know what he has and how he might work for us. As has been mentioned, he's probably a guy who will share the carries or be around for half a season or so.

Our future at the position is probably not on the team yet. Our future is coming out of the draft IMO. This is a bridge to get the guy we draft ready to start IMO.

And if he does make the team, he is cheaper than Dunbar. I like the signing as well, no downside in taking a chance on the player.

If you look at this from the perspective of drafting a guy like Gurley, who may not be ready till the later part of this season or even next season, then this signing makes all the sense in the world. It's a two year deal that can be a one year deal. Not saying that the Cowboys are going to take Gurley but if, IF, that's what they are looking at, then McFadden makes a whole lot of sense.

This is going to be the worst defense in the history of the nfl. Just cancel the season.

Understood completely :)

So I ask you... No benefit of the doubt from you for playing for raiders?

Playing for the Raiders had nothing to do with his injuries. I can see McFadden performing pretty well behind the Cowboys OL but I feel certain the team didn't sign him to be the starter. Is it possible he could start? Yeah, it's possible with Murray gone and nothing solid behind him but he certainly isn't going to sniff 300 carries even if he did stay healthy. He's never carried the ball more than 223 times and that was 5 years ago. He hasn't carried the ball more than 155 times the past 2 seasons so expect him to be part of a 2-3 back rotation until hopefully the rookie RB the Cowboys draft in April emerges and is ready to carry the load. The Cowboys want to keep McFadden healthy so even if he does start he'll be in and out of the lineup as part of a rotation/committee.

One thing that makes me thing it was the Raiders:

Pollack coached him in Oakland and I don't see how this went through, without Pollack's input. And McFaddaen did not put up good numbers when Pollack was hired. Maybe even Frank thinks the Oakland situation sucked.

Somebody would have to explain to me why the Raiders' run game was worse with McFadden getting the carries vs. the rest of the backs.

That's the little hang up that doesn't jive with the poor supporting cast defense.

Somebody also has to explain why they got him when he sucked and Pollack was coaching the Raiders OL and Pollack is now coaching in Dallas...

I know I wouldnt have paid him either. Career year for production and duability in a contract year. Coincidental?

Good comment.. Never looked at it this way. At the same time, two years ago, Murray took off his helmet angrily when he didn't get touches.

I am worried about the lack of Callahan's coaching on the running game frankly.

This, right here, is my biggest concern. We may think it's the loss of Murray, if the RBs don't perform, but what if it's Callahan being gone. Got to wait and see in the end...

If he's starter worthy, he'll be the starter.
