Johnny Manziel and RGIII mega thread **merged**

If he was truly hyped up, then that means that the Cowboys REALLY SUCKED a lot more on defense than we originally thought. The kid has great skills - just needs to get his mind right. Reminds me of Steve Young coming to SF to back up Joe Montana is '87. The irony is that BOTH GUYS were 26 the season that they became back-ups to Elite QB's (or may become a back-up in RGIII's case).

I disagree, he is a 1 read QB who used his running ability and now with a couple of knee injuries I want no part of him. Sorry I don't see the Steve young comparison Young could read the field and make the throws I don't see RGIII doing that. I see him more as a Mike Vick at best.

The price won't be right. People keep assuming he is going to sign to be a backup and accept high end backup money. He will sign somewhere to be a starter and get paid starter money.

Where? It would take a very desperate and short sighted team to look at tape of Griffin from last preseason and sign him to be a starter and pay him.

I would rather return to Weeden before RG3. I dislike him that much

You may not value him but there is a reason why the Cowboys keep him around and other teams keep trying to interview him and he's turning them down.

Who wouldn't stay? Jerry is famous for paying non productive people who make few good decisions. The Cowboys are the best job any one could have.

Its relevant to his statement saying that we will just sign a player and be satisfied......when you make a statement like that I assume you are basing that statement on past events from this team? Otherwise why make the statement? Just a pure guess?

IMO, RGIII and/or Manzeil will have far more to work with here then they did at their previous spots. Both would have a elite receiver, solid running game, solid offensive line, solid tight end.......I personally believe with all that RGIII would be the more successful of the two. But i'm speaking strictly on backup roles. Not sure how I feel about either ever being a starter for us.

I don't want either of them. Manziel isn't talented and has major off field issues. RGIII has only had one good year when he ran the read option. I don't think either will want to just be a backup and I don't think we'd sign either with just that in mind. And I don't want the signing of one to influence what we may do in the draft. Last thing I want is for Manziel or RGIII to come here and be viewed as a possible replacement for Romo and us neglect taking a potential higher caliber QB in the draft. It is possible we could sign one and still look in the draft, but I think it'd make us think we have the situation solved and we'll look elsewhere and in a couple of years we'll still be needing a new QB.

I think RG3 is certainly the lesser of the two evils. Even if Johnny genuinely wants to be here in Dallas, I think RG3 can be salvaged and I believe he has the potential to be a good QB in this league based on his rookie season.

He could go down as another Vince Young, but you can't tell me that Goff or Lynch are definitively better options for this team than RG3 or Manziel from a pure talent standpoint.

Yes, a rookie backup, that'll win us some games if Romo goes down! Great thinking.

Are you new to the NFL? There are tons of QB's who started as rookies over the last several years. If we draft one, he sure as heck better be able to backup a few games if needed. Especially when drafted 4th.

Foles looked pretty awful his last year in Philly but he still received a short term contract making north of 10 million annually. The backup for the Bears that torched us a few years ago has got paid heavily for a few good games. QB is such an in demand position, I feel there will be a competitive market and teams giving him a chance to play.

The only time Griffin had any level of success was when he ran the read option. So unless Dallas starts running the read option, I would have no interest. And, if by some miracle, the Cowboys start running the read option, I'd take Kaepernick over Griffin.

You mean the exceptions, like the 2012 draft? Suddenly every rookie QB is Andrew Luck and Russel Wilson? They won't be the Gabbert's, Bortles, Mariota's, Smiths', and Manuel's that the league brings in at a higher rate?

Yep, two mediocre QB prospects are the answer at backup in the first round.

Because he SUCKS! that's why

Rookie of the year and leading his team to the playoffs was a fluke I guess!!.....He has more talent than the quarterback scrap heap that's been through this franchise the last few years put together....

I agree with your statement, but why do people keep trashing Blake Bortles? Guy threw for the second most TD passes this year.

Both Foles and McCown had strong years previously in pro offenses, not gimmicky rookie seasons and nothing since.

After that rookie season the league figured out the read option. RGIII has also had several knee injuries since then. As a pocket passer he doesn't have it. Signing RGIII would be more about Jerry the marketer than about trying to win football games.
