Arrington buys his freedom from the Commanders

By JOSEPH WHITE, AP Sports Writer
March 6, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- LaVar Arrington was so disenchanted with the Washington Commanders that he gave up money rather than stay with the team.

The three-time Pro Bowl linebacker and the Commanders parted ways late Sunday night in a deal that allowed Arrington to become a free agent while giving the team a needed break in its effort to get under the salary cap.

An official with knowledge of the transaction, speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said Arrington agreed to a buyout that relinquished more than $4 million rather than restructure his contract in a way that would allow him to remain in Washington.

During the past week, the Commanders have asked several veterans to restructure their contracts so the team could get under the NFL's salary cap. The team will need to slash some $20 million of cap money if there is no new collective bargaining agreement before the start of free agency.

The free agent market was originally scheduled to open last Friday, but it has been postponed twice while negotiations continue between the NFL and the players' union. It's now scheduled to start Thursday at 12:01 a.m.

The official told the AP that Arrington was the only Commanders player who refused to rework his deal. Arrington was disgruntled over playing time last season and wanted a chance to pursue free agency.

Yet the Commanders couldn't cut Arrington outright because it would have cost the team under the league's complex salary cap rules. He was due to count some $12 million against the cap in 2006, including a $6.5 million roster bonus.

So Arrington essentially agreed to give money back -- and forfeit the upcoming roster bonus -- to buy his freedom.

In a brief statement, the Commanders confirmed Arrington was to become a free agent but gave no details other than that his departure will provide "much-needed salary cap relief." The team said coach Joe Gibbs would address the matter at a noon news conference Monday.

Arrington's departure marks a sour end in Washington for the franchise's most popular player of recent years. Arrington was the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2000 and played in three straight Pro Bowls from 2001-03. He signed an eight-year $68 million contract extension near the end of the 2003 season, moved his family to the area and vowed to remain with the Commanders throughout his career.

But Arrington hurt his knee early in the 2004 season and played in only four games. In April 2005, after his second knee surgery, he criticized team officials for the way his injury was handled. He was also in a dispute with owner Dan Snyder over a $6.5 million bonus he claimed was missing from the final version of his contract.

The contract dispute was eventually settled, but Arrington then found himself unable to get on the field. He was a marginal player in the first six games of the season last year and didn't play at all in a loss at Denver. Coaches said Arrington was still recovering from his knee injury, but there was also the sense that Arrington, a creative player known to make big plays by freelancing on the field, wasn't a good fit in assistant coach Gregg Williams' disciplined defensive schemes.

Arrington eventually regained his starting job at midseason, but was not the impact player he had been in years past. He finished the season without a sack, and his only interception came in the playoff victory at Tampa Bay.

why? have you actually watched this loser play?

he makes WAY more knuckleheaded plays than good plays, and a great defensive coordinator like Greg Williams couldnt stand him...then factor in his injury status and his agents (Postons) and this is an easy "hell no"

As far as i remember he didn't get labeled as a freelancer until after his contract disputes, and it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that he was blacked balled by the Skins. Now his representation may be questionable, but I don't think his abilities are IMO.

Lavar arrington next to Bradie James and Demarcus ware sounds pretty good to me. I'd rather have him then TO, if his knee is healthy.

Several Eagle fans view LaVar as being a situational player. He's been caught out of position more often than not; causing unnecessary yardage for opposing teams.

Arrington may have some health issue since his last knee surgery. However, he would be nice to have for depth purposes -- he's have to win his position with the Eagles.

He was labeled a freelancer WAY before any contract problems. He had that label in college.

Lavar doesn't have the speed he used too, and he freelances in space. I'd prefer to move him inside and let him play downhill. Don't forget he played DE last year, when the Skins could have desperately used him at WLB if he was capable or still covering.

Yep. I agree. This helps the Commanders more than it hurts them--it was probably the second least bad of several very bad options for them. But they do take a big dead money hit this year and they would have rather him restructured. According to the article, he refused. Good for him.

He was labeled the most undisciplined played ever coached by a defensive guru. His name. Marvin Lewis. Not something I think BP would like.
Sounds just like Lawrence Taylor to me....if he's the answer at the other outside LB, then Parcells will learn to live with his gambling nature just like he had to learn to live with it with LT.

He had a big pick in the Tampa playoff game.
That ball was thrown right to him.

So let me get this straight, the fans want to sign the guy who danced on the star AND the guy who ended Aikman's career?

Seriously though, if he'd make the team better I am for it but I have the same concerns as others about the injuries.

I'm not a big fan of Lavar's. He makes great plays out of position and misses plays he should make. He runs top heavy and is injury prone. After the interception against Tampa in the playoffs he ran like an old man on a play he would have scored on 4 years ago. The only way he makes sense is at a bargain price. Lavar ain't no LT, LOL.

I would only want him if he's a pass rusher only....no coverage responsibilities....see the qb get the qb....nothing else

I don't want the Cowboys to reach for anyone who probably isn't worth it, but I can't tell ya how much better I think this team would be if they could just add one more great linebacker to go with Ware and James. I hope they find someone in the draft if they don't pursue a veteran free-agent.
