This infatuation with the idea that the Cowboys could get Payne is unhealthy and delusional. Know your Front Office.
Have to agree. And I know it’s fantasy but I messed around with the manage the cap simulator and it took an offer of 26m per to get him to sign. But before we laugh that off, top WRs got near that kind of money so not unthinkable that the top DT in his prime might want that neighborhood. We sure ain’t paying that. Not sure we’d pay a third or fourth of that.

You think they could afford that contract if they wanted too, with Lamb n Parsons coming up?

Yeah, let's sign our guys, and stay mediocre. No need to get better, maybe the NFC east will underperform again and get a break in the playoffs like the Eagles did this year.

We need to get a real GM, but that's not going to happen either!
The Cowboys basically went for it a few years ago and wrote out some huge backloaded contracts. The team didn't get too deep unfortunately and the bill is coming due now. I'm surprised this website doesn't discuss that more.

Regardless, I would absolutely love it if the team could just sign everyone. I just don't see it money wise. They are actually in pretty bad shape due to multiple bad contracts (Zeke 17m, Dak 50m, DLaw 26m, Gallup 13m and Lael 8.4m) are all big hits waaaaaay above their contribution.

You sound like the Jones' boys. We like our guys, there's better out there, but we like our guys. We want to overpay Diggs and Gallup, but not Daron Payne. We can use that money on Odigizua, or Golston. That is the thinking that will forever keep us mediocre.
I would personally take Payne over Diggs. If we sign Payne, we can use the money we get in two years from d laws contract to sign Micah. Then use galluis money to go toward Diggs. I know someone gigs will wavt more but it’s extra money. Plus sook, Tyron will be gone, that’s a extra 10 plus mill a year.

I think McCarthy doesn't value DTs much.

He wants rushmen on pass downs and a big NT on run downs. Class 4-3 DTs don't fit his scheme. He wants role players.

https://www.drafthistory.com/teams/packers.html

McCarthy's crew has drafted two interior guys in first round during his GB stint there ( Clarke and BJ Raji) .. and both were pro bowlers
they have drafted interior guys such as thorton ...worthy and Daniels., but they just did not pan out ..

Like a many ton of teams, they have always been successful drafting a gem interior guy.

- Frankly i think you don't force a draft for a position... just for sake of drafting one .
- and along with safety) is the most difficult position to successfuly draft a pro bowl level, impact playmaker in the very early rounds, much less first rounder

Stephen seems suited to be an office manager. I don’t know if he’s right for running a team.

I'd offer like $12M, $13M a year. I know that's not a competitive offer, but I don't want to compete for Payne. He's a better than average pass rusher at DT, but 11 sacks is not the type of dude he is. He's more of a 5-6 sack kind of dude. His prior track record, (dude's had four 2-5 sack seasons), PFF grade (below average this year, and he's hovered around average for 5 years), and pressures-to-sacks mean regression all point to him not justifying the kind of $20M/yr deal he's likely going to get.

Spoiler for some big graphs

I wonder if it would be worth signing Payne. He is going to cost a ton of money and the Cowboys have their own free agents, like CeeDee and Diggs to pay, not to mention Dak. The can probably get Tomlinson and Hankins for less than it will take to sign Payne and the DL would still be much improved. I just hope the Cowboys are willing to get some help on that area.

If the Skins plan on going with Howell, sink or swim, they could make the Payne situation work even with paying Allen as they can clean cut from Wentz this offseason and have a rookie contract at QB to keep the defensive side strong.

Who knows, but it would be poor asset management to simply let him walk. I think they'll tag him with the minimum expectation to at least try to trade him for 2023 picks.

Not sure about that. He drafted BJ Raji pretty high back in the day, and at the time, Raji (who obviously was a giant NT) was also seen as a guy who could get up the field as well. He was kind of a Vince Wilfork hybrid freak type that obviously didnt quite live up to that for the long haul.
