Looking back: Was it a mistake not to go back to Romo

Switching to Dak when we did was a must. Romo's back was fragile enough by then to pop with one hit. It would've been an easy target.

Actually he took about 8 snaps in one series in the final game of the season. It resulted in him throwing a td pass.

You do remember that it was an 81 yard drive that included the following:
24 yard run by McFadden.
29 yard pass interference call on Dez.
Def. Holding call to convert 3rd down
A dink and dunk pass 2 yards past the LOS that McFadden ran for 11 yards and 1st down.
3 yard TD pass lol.

I didn't really remember the drive but after all the crazy comments of late, I figured I would check it out. Wow, it was pretty amazing what it has been transformed into..... especially being the inconsequential game it was.

I wonder how things would have played out in 2016 if Romo got his job back once he became healthy.

Perhaps he could have taken the team all the way to the Superbowl like he almost did in 2014.

Perhaps Romo could have played one more season and Dak would only have 2018 and 2019 as being a starter for this team. His value would most likely be worth less because 2017 was a down year for Dak.

Perhaps he could've got re-injured and Dak would've stepped back in only further proving Romo's durability issues.

But to this day I still think Garrett and Jones did Romo dirty by not giving him his starting job back.

The problem with Romo was durability. He played the best ball of his career in 2014. MVP level play. He looked very sharp in the one drive they allowed him. Hadn't played for months, and marched down the field for a TD. He was *already* paid for. Put him back in. If he breaks, you put Dak back in and you're back where you started.

This way we get two chances for great QB play. Dak wasn't going anywhere. If Romo doesn't still have it, move to Dak the next year, like we did. If Romo still has it, now you've got two franchise QBs. A good problem to have.

Dumping Romo let Garrett stick around longer. Moving on from Garrett (and lots of things) when Romo was done was an obvious move. By sticking with Dak, Garrett got a rationale to not rock the boat on the success with Dak.

Other teams: If Romo had anything left in the tank, the Cowboys would have played him in 2016.

Jerry kept trying to squeeze a draft pick out of Romo, and when most of free agency was done, Tony took a deal as the *lead* color commentator for CBS. Romo had a spectacular option in CBS, and Jerry holding onto Romo limited his options with other teams.

Some team would have certainly signed Romo with an incentive laden contract, but Tony didn't have to settle for "some team". He *shouldn't* have. Starting at the top at CBS was a *huge* opportunity. Only a handful of such positions exist, and most years, you don't even have an opening, let alone one that will take a newbie off the field. Without an offer at a serious SB contender, Tony shouldn't have even considered still playing.

The last anyone saw of Romo he drove the length of the field with a 134 QB rating. Didn't look done then.

Tony was broken. Good chance he couldn't last a season. But I took the question as playing Tony in 2016. Half a season. Already paid for. Tony still looking sharp. Play the man.

NFC championship game would have been in Seattle. Which Dallas won there early in the season. Would have crushed them too if not for a 7 point block and 2 bone headed turnovers.

Definitely could have beat Seattle to go onto the superbowl.

That play happened with 4 minutes left in the game. If that play had been a TD we give Aaron Rodgers the ball back with 4 minutes left needing a FG to win. We weren't winning that game

Rewatch that 2016 playoff game. You'll notice how the officials made unnecessary calls ALL GAME LONG against the Dak-led Cowboys and how it not only killed 4-5 drives but also took away 2-3 potential TD opportunities.

Romo had 1 bad call called against him in the GB playoff game of 2014. Dak had 7+ bad calls called against his Offense. That's not including the several "non-calls" against our Defense during that game as well that helped Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

It's not even a close comparison. Dak and his Cowboys BY FAR got bamboozled by the crooked officials in that GB playoff game in 2016 than Romo and his Cowboys did in their GB playoff game in 2014.

Also, Romo never threw for more than 2 TDs or even reached 300 yards passing in 6 playoff game attempts throughout his career. Dak easily accomplished both during his rookie playoff game. This pretty much should silence all of the "Romo would have performed better" during that 2016 playoff GB game.

Plus Dak tied the game twice in the last few minutes of the 4th quarter

Whilst you are likely right, with the points on the board it's a different scenario. It might have given the D a bit more juice to make a stop. They almost did but a tipped pass fell into the hands of a GB receiver rather than a Cowboys defender. If we had the lead then we might have been set up slightly differently and we make an interception. Who knows.

People comparing the Green Bay defense of 2014 and 2016 as being of a similar level...a week after overcoming the Cowboys in 2014 the Packers D had 4 Interceptions and 5 sacks on Russell Wilson in Seattle. They win the game but for horrific coaching by McCarthy during the second half and a couple of boneheaded plays late in the game. Compare that with guys off the street in the Packers' secondary in 2016 and after overcoming the Cowboys, the Packers D gave up 44 points vs the Falcons and it would have been over 50 if needed.

I largely agree re 2014 and the reality is that it was on Dez Bryant. I love me some Dez so I don't bang on about it but he knew the rules or should have known the rules at the time. He had control of the ball, he just needed to land normally in play to chew up some clock rather than focus on trying to score a TD! Yet people blame Romo for not throwing the ball to Beasley having slowed down the play to super slow mo and seen him open for a split second. Football doesn't work like that and when watched in real time the throw to Beasley just wasn't on. Romo would have had to loop the ball to him by which time Beasley would have got crushed by a defender. It's questionable if he even makes the first down and even more unlikely that he holds onto the ball. Yet some people blame Romo for Dez dropping the ball! Just shows how much people hate him.

I don't blame the zebras - the rule was the problem which has subsequently been changed and rightly so.

Blaming officials and decisions is a loser mentality. I remember the Lions blaming the play where the zebras picked up a flag in the 2014 play off game. They conveniently do not mention the countless incorrect decisions against the Cowboys in that game which were far more than against the Lions and officially documented after the game. Best team won on the day with a fantastic comeback. Loser mentality blaming officials.
