Looking back: Was it a mistake not to go back to Romo

I largely agree re 2014 and the reality is that it was on Dez Bryant. I love me some Dez so I don't bang on about it but he knew the rules or should have known the rules at the time. He had control of the ball, he just needed to land normally in play to chew up some clock rather than focus on trying to score a TD! Yet people blame Romo for not throwing the ball to Beasley having slowed down the play to super slow mo and seen him open for a split second. Football doesn't work like that and when watched in real time the throw to Beasley just wasn't on. Romo would have had to loop the ball to him by which time Beasley would have got crushed by a defender. It's questionable if he even makes the first down and even more unlikely that he holds onto the ball. Yet some people blame Romo for Dez dropping the ball! Just shows how much people hate him.

I don't blame the zebras - the rule was the problem which has subsequently been changed and rightly so.

Blaming officials and decisions is a loser mentality. I remember the Lions blaming the play where the zebras picked up a flag in the 2014 play off game. They conveniently do not mention the countless incorrect decisions against the Cowboys in that game which were far more than against the Lions and officially documented after the game. Best team won on the day with a fantastic comeback. Loser mentality blaming officials.

Definite mistake I that he was on fire when healthy, bit this organization at that point wouldn't have won with an all pro at every position. Not with their coaches and and management decisions

Yes that was the flag that they picked up. There were a few big calls that went against us as well.

Romo would have pulled a wentz and been hurt on the first drive. So no. It wouldn’t have mattered. His body was failing him at that point and he had to decide between growing old with his kids on both his feet or in a wheelchair. Any father makes the same decision.

I would have let Romo finish his career as the starter for the 2016 finals series but I don’t think the choice to play Dak was necessarily wrong. I just think it was close enough that playing Romo was the right call.

And for the record I am in favor of giving Dak his contract now.

We would have had another disappointing loss like usual.
What have we sen from Romo's career in the playoffs or big games that makes you think he would have take the team to a SB?
2014 was the year to beat the Packers. Rodgers basically had a torn calf and Romo couldnt do it then.
Tough pill to swallow but Romo was a good QB in the league when you needed to be great.

Manning, Brady, Brees, Favre, Rodgers, Big Ben, Stafford Matt Ryan, Eli, Rivers, Later on Wilson, Andrew Luck, Newton
Where would you honestly put Romo on the list above? I would say he is better than Eli only. I would rather have every other QB on the list above.

First off the Romo lead Cowboys of 2014 didn't get any further in the playoffs than the Prescott led Cowboys in 2018 did. They both lost in the divisional round. There are different views of whether to have had Romo get is job back. There has been a lot of coaches in just about all sports that subscribe to ride with hot hand for as long as it lasts. A lot of coaches have made the same decisions to not change things while they are winning. At the time the Cowboys were on a 9 game winning streak. That streak lasted for another 2 games before losing the 2nd and last loss of the entire season. Another thing is Romo had been off for a long time and there was the thought that he may be a little rusty and that could cause a loss.
I'm not saying it was right or wrong to not go back to romo, but what I'm only saying a lot of coaches would have done the same thing Garrett did.

Absolutely horrible call at the time and cost this franchise a possible superbowl and more. Romo wasn't allowed to compete for his job because he was doing more in practise with the 2nd string than Dak was doing with 1st. That last drive against the Eagles.. I realise everyone wants to think the Eagles were laying down.. they weren't. You could find at least 10 Romo drives with the same effortless calm and precision.

Romo was fragile in the end.. the result of being behind a woeful line for many, many years. When we FINALLY built a line.. got it healthy.. and then got a RB to replace Murray (why why why didn't we go in hard in 15?!) we hand the keys to a 4th round rookie.

Dak looked good that year because teams had schemed for Romo.. they started to work him out.. but Dak had Sanchez and Romo in his ear driving the plays.. and we had a very simplified offence that meant Dak was the ultimate dink and dunk bus driver.

Romo would have driven that team all the way to the Lombardi.. no doubt in my mind. I'm still fuming.. not that I was a huge fan of Romo's but because it was such a golden opportunity and we blew it.. why? Because Dak sold more merch??? Because he didn't change plays in the huddle and point out that Carrot was a moron? The NFC sighed with relief when we 'stuck with the hot hand'.. I reckon they would still be getting a laugh out of it.

After coming back from surgery and throwing pin point spirals with an amazing TD drive against Philly? absolutely not. Cowboys wanted a QB that throws wobbly passes above, at the feet of, and behind the receivers.

This same healthy line was the one that got Romo knocked out of the game the year Dak took control and the year prior. How would Romo have driven that team to the Lombardi when he hadn't been any further in the playoffs his entire career?

Yes, based on every NFL measurable outside of legitimate ones like health, and non-legitimate ones like "riding a winning streak". But we know it was latter and not the former. It was a stupid decision by a stupidly run organization based on ignoring historical statistics and some wild belief in a miracle. Not really. Sometimes you can only make these decisions after you have the benefit of time.

In 2016, I was a strong proponent of staying with the hot hand. In fairness to Dak, that loss in the divisional playoffs was not on him; it was on poor coaching and bad defense.

So I’m going to say no, Romo still wouldn’t have won that game.

2016 remains, to me, the best year of Dak’s career. I’m not looking at passing yards, which reflects changes in the NFL over the past 4 years and the benefit of being in a Kellen Moore offense. I’m talking about touchdowns to interceptions and making good decisions, running with the football, etc.

Healthy, Romo was FAR superior to Dak in 2016.

Saying it was or wasn't a mistake is revisionist history, but Dak never really showed the capacity for that drive against Philly until the back 9 of the the 2018 season.
