With Murray, we cant sign the Kraken and there was no way for them to know before hand that we would have gotten Gregory in the back of the 2nd round.

Again, Murray was a good back, but nothing special, and he would never have had another season like last year, and he was not worth the money and the contract he signed.

You want your cake and eat it too and you simply cant do that in the NFL anymore. I applaud the Cowboys for no longer just spending for the hell of it in areas they cant afford to. It was more the line than Murray last year. As was proven the first 3 years that Murray was here.

Murray was special last season and the year he had is the main reason the Cowboys surprised everyone having the solid season they had. He was the main reason Romo had the most efficient season of his career leading the league in passer rating and completion percentage. Murray and the running game was the main reason the defense spent an average of 13 fewer plays on the field than in 2013 which helped improve their play. A lot of things have the potential to go wrong this season if the running game takes a significant hit from losing Murray. Had Jerry decided not to pay Emmitt during his holdout in 93 that saw the Cowboys drop their first 2 games there would have been no back to back SB wins for the Cowboys or anymore SB wins and the team would have never been the team of that decade. One player can make a huge difference to the success of a team especially a player they're riding week after week. The OL never proved it was them the first 3 seasons because Murray was the only back that consistently produced behind those transitioning OL's. While he was averaging 5.5 a carry in 2011 as a rookie none of the other backs that had 70 or more carries averaged more than 4.5 a carry.

Two of the backs averaged under 4.0 a carry that season with 70 plus attempts. Murray was the only Cowboys back in 2012 to average over 4.0 a carry. Felix Jones had over 100 carries that season and averaged 3.6 per carry compared to Murray's 4.1. In 2013 Murray averaged 5.2 a carry compared to 3.0 a carry for Randle who had a career high in carries and had his only 2 starts. I don't applaud anything that cost you your MVP from the previous season. It was bad contracts signed by Miles Austin and Sean Lee that helped cost the Cowboys Murray. They lost Ware due to those bad contracts and their pass rush that could have beat the Packers in the playoffs went with him. Jerry should have waited on Lee to prove he could stay healthy before resigning him. He could have signed him for much less had he waited and signed Dez first. He would have gotten Dez much cheaper. As I've said without Murray it's up in the air where the Cowboys are despite their defensive additions. With Scandrick lost for the season, Hardy gone for the first 4 games and McClain gone for at least several games the defense still has some issues and if the running game isn't as consistent as last season it's going to add more pressure on Romo and the defense.

I love watching this debate. All sides make some really good points. However, you should make sure you present facts that are actual facts. We could have signed Murray and the Kracken if we wanted to. We offered Murray a contract that was only 1.5 to 2 million less than what he got from philly. Plus Romo could have restructured before he did and that would have created room. So what you are saying isn't true. In fact it's been said to you before and you continue to ignore the facts and replace real facts with your version of facts.

Then you say it was proven to be the line the first 3 years MurrY was here.....yet Murray averaged more yards per rush in 2 of the first 3 years than he did last year...

The main difference between the previous years and last year was our coaches commitment to the run game. In the past years we would roll off 10 straight pass plays...last year we changed that. We ran first and threw second.

I get it that Randle, McFadden, Joe Six Pack and every back out there can have some success behind a dominant line...the main thing that concerns me and the thing that made us special last year was our ability to run even when defenses stacked 8 in the box. We were very successful when teams tried to take our run game away last year...Murray may have ran out of bounds often or ran without the top end in the open field..but he was a bruising force inside when the box was stacked and we needed to run the ball play after play. Not flashy or dashy but very effective and chrurning out tough yards.

I hope we can have the physical presence this year to keep running effectively when the defense is trying to take it away from us. I don't want us to go back to taking what the defense gives us...I loved the swagger from rolling over defenses and beating on them until they broke.

yah, we could do whatever we want, but it wouldnt have been prudent. And your facts also need to include the

Could have and should have are two different things. And your facts should also include 5 years of that salary. Did you analyze who was coming due in the next 5 years? We could probably do anything we want. Restructure Romo for another 4 years and keep pushing it. But obviously management has smartened up and they arent paying injury prone, good backs like they are all world for one great year out of 4.

You can mince words all you want between, could and should and what was prudent, but they made the right decision financially and in the long term. And they recognize that the running game is more about the line then the back and that putting assets towards the defense was the RIGHT thing and most needed thing to do.
Which has left the short term thinking, over hype Murray fans complaining about it. For my money, I love what they did with Murray. I just dont like they didnt draft a back in this years draft. Had they done that, most of the Murray lovers wouldnt be complaining.

I do share many of your concerns and completely agree that Garrett was one of the big reasons why Murray didnt have more success in prior years.

Relying being the key word.

I want DMC to produce more then anybody. But I hate the fact that he will have to produce in our RBBC approach to give us a shot at winning;

When it gets down to Dunbar and Gus splitting carries with Randle...... Its going to hurt us. Cost us.

For my money, I would like Duke Johnson or some other similar rookie back and Randle battling it out for the starting spot with possibly McFadden on the bench and in some passing situations.

Err.....Read it and weep.

After leading the NFL in rushing yards with 1,845 and a whopping 392 rushing carries and 57 receptions, some in the NFL world were worried that Murray, at 27 years old, would burn out from the heavy workload.

Chip Kelly told SI's Peter King that it is something he's concerned about, and is limiting Murray's action consequently:

"I think there is a lot of validity to it. But how do you manage him going into a season? Our plan all along was to get another running back with him. I wanted to have two running backs, and that’s why we got Ryan [Mathews]. I don’t think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful. We’re going to run it a lot—we always do—but we’ll have more than one guy doing it."

And the Eagles are indeed exercising caution with Murray.

That proves nothing. They wanted two TBs right at the start of free agency. So to argue that they added a 2nd TB specifically for Murray is silly and wrong. Kelly wanted two RBs in free agency and Mathews was the one they wanted to pair to Gore. Anyone with a brain can follow the timeline in free agency.

Matthews was contacted BEFORE Murray was even an option and reached out to Philly. They had contacted Mathews over the weekend when they also reached a verbal agreement with Gore.

You're just wrong.

LOL....read the article my man and stop going off on a tangent.

FACT: Murray is not capable of handling a full load like last year all the time. They wanted two backs to split up the carries. So Murray, like McFadden and Randle are in a RB by committee tandem. So Murray was overpaid for what he is gong to be asked to do.

And over paying for injury prone back is just plain stupid. When Gore took a hike on them they had to get desperate because Mathews is also INJURY prone. So they had to over pay for Murray.

." I wanted to have two running backs, and that’s why we got Ryan [Mathews]. I don’t think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful"

This is Chip Kelly slapping you up side the head and telling you like how it really is. Whether they signed one before the other is inconsequential.

It proves that you are 100% completely dead wrong. When the coach that signed him tells you he is incapable of being THAT kind of back, you are flat dead busted.

All you Murray lovers are claiming that Murray is a 1800 yards stud RB and Chip Kelly, who just signed him is telling you point blank that he is NOT.

Nothing to impress. He was injury prone in college and injury prone in Dallas. Those are the facts. If you dont think that is injury prone, then you just dont understand what injury prone means. Your are either incapable of understanding the nature of the term injury prone, or you dont want to admit it based on your stubborn cry baby nature. :)

You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink. Murray has been injury prone, that is 100% fact.

The cowboys knew it, and his new employer knows it. Whether you know it or not is completely inconsequential.

cry baby nature? lol You think too highly of yourself but then most loud mouth do. You telling me or anyone you are going to educate us get over yourself you views are just that your and means nothing to me as you mean nothing to me.

Yah, Im not on this Philly bandwagon. The Cowboys defense will be much improved and the pass rush will trump anything we lost in the run game.

McCoy was better than Murray. In my opinion, they downgraded at RB.

You're assuming a lot that the pass rush will trump anything we lose in the running game. Hardy won't be around the first 4 games and once he gets back it could take some time for him to return to form. Gregory is going to have a lot on his plate with Hardy gone so there's going to be some growing pains. If the Cowboys lose a lot in the running there's going to be issues that will affect Romo's play and the defense if they're forced to spend a lot of time on the field. As for Philly downgrading at RB far from it they upgraded in my opinion because they added 2 very solid backs that might fit Kelly's system better than McCoy. McCoy has more speed, is shiftier and is a better perimeter runner than Murray but Murray is a better downhill runner who can push piles and wear down defenses.

McCoy dances around a lot while Murray lowers his head and runs over defenders. He breaks more tackles that McCoy and he seems to fit Kelly's system better. The combination of Murray and Mathews will give Philly an excellent one-two punch provided both backs stay healthy. Having a 2 headed monster led by a couple of 1000 yard backs has given Philly some real punch and should take a lot of pressure off Bradford. Instead of McCoy Philly ended up with 2 solid backs and a very promising young LB that has a chance to become an elite player if he can return to the form he showed in Buffalo.

I don't think the pro Murray and anti Murray sides of this debate are really that far from each other. I agree with you that most Murray fans are as upset with how we addressed the position as they are with the fact that we let him leave....I didn't love letting him go but I understood it because I believed we had a plan to fill his role with a player that would allow us to continue our style of success we had last year. I never would have believed that we would replace Murray with McFadden and Randle...I love McFaddens burst and I love Randles wiggle and vision. Both guys do bring something to the table that is at least intriguing. However, neither guy runs the way Murray does. Not saying in 100% of the cases Murray will be the better fit. But in the way we ran our offense last year Murray or Murrays style seems like a better fit than either McFadden or Randle.

maybe Randle will explode through the defenses and command the respect from the league the way Demarco did...maybe we will have the same swagger we had last year going into Seattle and lining up and out physical the tough defenses. At this point we have to make the best with what we have. But I just don't see the need to diminish Murray when he is a quality back no matter how you slice it...I told my eagles friends they picked up a quality strong back and a good teammate in Murray..I stand by it.

I could care less if you have no clue about Murray. The Cowboys understand and that is what was important. And clearly the Eagles understand. So I will take the opinion of his last two coaches over your opinion.

Exactly and Kelly said as much when the let McCoy go. McCoy is a fantanstic RB but a different style of RB and Kelly feels Murray fits what he wants to do.

Wow, you didnt mention Mcfadden. Ok, I will bite.

Let me just roll out the fact for you and tell me where you disagree:

1. Murray is a very good back
2. The Oline is more important that Murray was in the success of the RG
3. I dont like the current RB situation
4. Randle, if he can stay healthy will have success behind this line
5. I wanted a top rookie back in the draft
6. Murray is NOT worth the contract he got.
7. Although we could have made it work somehow, the money is better spent on the D and the pass rush.
8. McFadden sucks as a lead back

The running game was led by Murray and the back matters. Once a back gets past the OL it's all on the back from there.

Never said the back didnt matter. And the RB doesnt get past the line without a hole.

Just answer this one question for me:

What is more important to a running game the Oline or the back?

A. Back
B. Line

All I can tell is to go Root for the Eagles then.

Thanks for not resigning Murray Jerry. WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!!

I never said McFadden sucks he's an average back and average doesn't mean a player sucks.
