IMO he has a point about undermining the coach's authority, but was Jones really obligated to get Dak's okay for the trade? Every player in the NFL should know that it's a meritocracy, and that you start as long as you're the best player for your position. If someone else turns out to be better, then that player starts instead. That's how it is, and it's been this way for a long time. Dak got his job via the meritocracy. Romo had the job, but got hurt and couldn't do it until he healed. In the meantime, Dak played great, earning the job. Romo said as much in his press conference. It works both ways. If at some point Lance is the one playing the best football at the position, then he'll start. I don't think any player should ever be guaranteed his position no matter what. The starting quarterback is not part of ownership, management, or the coaching staff. He doesn't make decisions about signing players, so why would Jones consult him?

The head coach should be in on it, of course, but, if I understand it right, it was a case where the 49ers called about it, and Jones already knew that McCarthy had evaluated Trey Lance highly and they wanted him in that original draft. He could therefore make the deal already aware that McCarthy would be good with it. Plus, he would lose the deal to some other team if he let the 49ers hang up with no deal. At least that's how it went down if the media sources are reporting it accurately. It sounds different than the Terrell Owens deal where Jones just went out and got him, even though Coach Parcells didn't necessarily want him (if sources are to be believed).

I don't know, man. This particular deal doesn't seem to me like Jones was stepping all over his coaches toes like it seems he was in previous deals. As far as telling his quarterback, any player, quarterback included, should expect that someone might compete for his job. The game itself isn't the only competition. Players compete for positions. And, at this point, Lance is more competing with Cooper Rush for his job than he is for Dak's.
