Irving is playing DT and TCrawford is playing DE. Collins and McClain are the starting DTs.

It's easy to poo poo on players when we are when based on youth and hunger. I'm not interested in building a team with some guys who've had their time. Give me hunger over a aged veteran any day Of the week.

Make no mistake I'd take a older veteran in this team with skill and in his prime. But if we had Freeney our record wouldn't be any better. Freeney has one more sack than Mayowa and you guys keep latching on Freeney just to bring up a negative this team made his offseason. We spent no money and had arguably the best offseason of anyone in the league and you guys keep latching in to.......Dwight......Freeney and his 3 sacks.

There's not. All you can do is hope and pray you hit on a Von Miller or Demarcus Ware and build your defense around them.

If they cut him after the season it will be a 1 year, 4 million dollar deal. They are paying Jeff Heath almost 2M per and have paid backup OLinemen over 3M in the past. It's a trivial amount considering that they didn't have to give up any draft picks to give him and shot.

I would prefer to miss on a 1/2 dozen of these deals than to miss on Randy Gregory in the 2nd round.

I don't think they are mutually exclusive.....we can sign a Freeney and be fiscally responsible....in fact his contract couldn't be any more team friendly..... I don't like that we don't even consider it

I have no problem with the Cowboys taking a chance on a Benson Mayowa - it was a relatively low cost signing that had some upside. He needs a lot of work on using his hands, and also some needed time in the weight room. Missing on a Mayowa doesn't hurt the football team.....

....unless he was the only addition made to bolster the pass rush. This is where the Cowboys failed. Anyone expecting Mayowa to be a 10 sack per season player was crazy. It was doing nothing else to fortify the position that has caused the lack of pass rush that the Cowboys roll out each week.

Lack of strength is definitely his problem. He has a good burst but can't finish because he can't disengage and can't Bull-rush.

Marinelli's scheme and coaching is a little odd in that he really does not like DE to rush wide and deep into the backfield (The DWare style). He likes them to go more straight at the OT (Not actually straight at him, but more so than many pass rushers). The trade-off is that he allows them to pass rush immediately and not read-and-react to play the run. By not rushing wide and deep it keeps them more in line to defend the run despite coming off the ball as if they are pass rushing.

Having said the above, he does give them a full go occasionally on 3rd and long.

The end result of this style is that speed rushers can struggle. Marinelli's DEs need some power especially with their hands and Mayowa just doesn't have that type of strength/power.

It makes me wonder if a drug-free Randy Gregory would struggle in this scheme also. IIRC he did struggle when he played.

Mayowa is listed at 6-3, 240.

Ryan Davis is listed at 6-2, 260 (He looks bigger and probably is considering that he was played DT in the past).

All of the other DEs are 270 and over.

that explains why TCrawford is having success with the move to SDE

Yup which is exactly why I wanted Bosa so bad. He is a prototype for what Marinelli does.

Because he goes away from what this team is building towards. They took a shot on Mayowa and failed. That doesn't mean they should stop taking flyers on guys. They took a flyer on Dak and that paid off.
 
We are 8-1 and are already scary. You can't be great at every position, no team is. We are young and building a dynasty, everybody just chill

Bosa has 4 in just 6 games. Anybody paying attention knows the circumstances with him.

He'd certainly be a welcome addition to the current Cowboys group.

And Leonard Floyd has 5 sacks in just 7 games.

Nobody is saying there's an "easy answer", but it's impossible to fix with nothing more than a token effort.

I admit that I had concerns about Bosa and wondered if he had 'maxed out' at the college level. While you were definitely one of his biggest advocates. Point to you on this one. It looks like you were absolutely right about him.

Not at the price of a Top Five pick. I haven't watched the last two but in his first game with two sacks, one was a coverage sack that came a full ten seconds after the snap. The second was pretty meh.

In his last two games Bosa has one tackle and zero sacks in each game. A guy like Ogbah will end up being a better player and come at a far smaller price.
