The Schoonmaker pick is already a bust. Massive reach and waste of a premium draft pick.
He’s been hurt, so too early to say bust, but doesn’t like there’s any drop off from Schultz to Ferguson. We know what Hendershot can do and he has a rookie clone now with Stephens. McKeon is a solid blocker. So it does feel somewhat like a wasted draft back. I know they were targeting some of those tight ends that went earlier, and I think that was the only pick worth it. A truly phenomenal TE. This felt more like a ‘better get someone now’ pick because they were determined to have depth at TE. Seems like we should’ve used that high round value on offensive line depth. I read all these articles on how every team is suffering with offensive line depth, well, maybe that’s a sign that you should be drafting them earlier!

Back to the original OP, way too early to make that judgment on Mazi. Someone mentioned this on another thread, and it’s a good point: It is a position that takes a while to develop for most rookies. It’s also a position very easy for fans to say isn’t making an impact because it’s not glorious at all. Reporters kept going on in TC about how he is going to learn to pass rush and was underutilized in that role which never made sense because he wasn’t brought in to do that. Unless he has permanently bad knees, I don’t see any bust signs yet.

A bust after a preseason game? Who did YOU want at 26?
nolan smith , Georgia edge rusher. A big miss . Cowboys needed someone to augment and replace some of the overpaid and underproducing edge rushers we have. Mazi seems too slow and limited . but let us see how he does in the next few games.

There are more reaches in this post than at a 6th grade basketball game.

Mazi Smith looked a lot like Jordan Davis did last year. The R1 NT pick last year whose team went to the Super Bowl....

I'd argue Dallas hasn't advanced in the playoffs largely because they have never built a core than surrounded them with quality veterans via trade or FA.
They've played it safe and relied on the draft which has produced quite nicely and kept them in 1st or 2nd in the division for most of the last decade.
But with a bunch of young guys and very little playoff winning experience they never quite got the job done when it mattered most.

Now as to the draft itself.
Mazi is a huge man who is mostly going to eat blocks. It was never meant to be a sexy pick but at some point, they needed to fire off a round 1 shot at nose tackle.
Colleges are now playing two very large run stuffers with 2-3 pass rushers and 5-6 coverage players.
The fewer big guys you put in the box the bigger role the DTs will have in stopping the run.
Schoon looks big and fast at TE. Will he be another R2 fizzle that shows great potential but never reaches consistently high level play? Quite possibly.
But anyone arguing after a single pre-season game that they know much about the draft class is cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

John Ridgeway is nothing more than a body he was what a 5th rounder . I wouldn’t mention him in a Mazi Smith rant . Smith has had one pre season game too early to start trashing .
If Ridgeway beats out Payne or Allen, then Dallas really should be embarrassed. That would mean he is an All-Pro type player.

Mazi Smith is already better than Ridgeway.

Um, they have the best edge in the game and Sam Williams to do exactly what you’re asking for. Nolan Smith would not see the field

That's what I was hoping but I looked him up and he's started 5 games the last 2 years and played in a bunch of others. So that doesn't make him some kind of world beater, but he's probably at least a serviceable player.
It’s his ex teammate at Georgia. The guy was a bum. I’m confused to why Carter only played 2 snaps though?

How can you tell an apple tree is actually an apple tree? ( whistling.........) Answer: By the fruit it produces. Another way of saying the cliche, talk is cheaper, show it.

When the Cowboys drafted Mazi, the sell job was " he is a great athlete". The Cowboys will coach the NFL into him. Well, a meanless preseason game and training camps, the Dallas Cowboys staff is not producing the fruit they were selling....so far. The staff couldn't do it with John Ridgeway after selling him when he was drafted. Dallas cut him and was picked up by the Commanders, who is a starters for them now.
Not giving up on Mazi, nor did he have a bust game, but being a #1 pick, the 1st showing was somewhat yawning.

And your 2nd round pick --right now --- looks like your 3rd string TE.

Want to see why Dallas can't sniff a NFC Conference game in 30 years, the groceries are bought from ALDI store
(Side note: OL was B-A-D and if just one starter goes down, look out )

Who the hell are you to say he sucks?

OK I want to ask you guys a question. Let's say Mazi and Schoonmaker are BUST, Then why is it that the Cowboys get NO credit for Overshown , Deuce and Stephens

Guys that NOBODy predicted would do a thing ? People just B and moan to have something to B and moan about. But they're just keeping it REAL or being objective. SCREW THAT!!!! If that's being objective, then objectivity

is severely overrated as a virtue

Let's get after it Go Cowboys

I'm not one to overreact or expect every position to be immediate stars but it is concerning that he doesn't seem to be "noticeably different" than much less heralded players.
Here’s a “fan” who expects a rookie DT to hav 3 sacks and 15 tackles in his first preseason game. Hey McFly, great DT’s don’t get many stats. They plug holes and let the LB’s and DE’s do their thing. I suggest getting NFL Football for Dummies.

This was a first preseason game. Meaningless for Smith. Way too early to bash him. I think he is going to be fine. If you want to vent, vent about the missing HOF G. Jerry needs to pull his head out of his arse and fix that.
