It makes sense. They don't pick the players anyway.
They might get a little cute every now and then, such as Jerry wanting Manziel, but they pay McClay to be the guy to tell them who to draft. I'm unsure what the coaches' role in that is, other than maybe telling him these positions are what they need the most and this is the type of player they like for their scheme. And I don't think the Joneses really do much more than sign off on the picks (although I'm sure they are in on the discussions about needs and give their input).
Like last year, I think McCarthy and Quinn both wanted a big DT. Don't think that was a Jerry and Stephen thing at all, except maybe in agreeing with them. McClay's team identified Mazi as the top one with the potential to be more than just a 1-tech, but knew we would have to take him in the first round based on their projections if we wanted him. Like with Tyler Smith, they saw enough promise with Mazi to take him there, even though some draft "experts" questioned if he should go that high. It worked with Tyler but hasn't yet with Mazi. Of course, defensive linemen can be slower to adjust to this level than offensive linemen, so who knows how it will turn out. I think the team wanting to Mazi to get his weight down to try to help his get-off was a bad decision, but I wouldn't think that's on McClay.
