With everything they gave up to get him you would think they would have given him the duration of his contract to come around. You don’t see teams give up any player who they invested a top 5 pick on after only 2 seasons unless there’s a serious off the field issue with the player. Lance may have wanted out but the 49ers invested far too much in him to try and do him a favor. If they saw any hope in him he would still be in SF and they wouldn’t have parted ways with him for only a 4th round pick. No teams saw much hope in him or someone would have given up at least a second rounder. It’s clear the 49ers wanted to get at least something for him.
The real story is they already new when they signed Sam Darnold to the $4.5M contract that Trance was going to be QB 3. They had no faith in him backing up Purdy or they never would have invested the $4.5M on a 1 year deal for Darnold.

The Niners new very early that Trance was way over his head.

Why? His throwing mechanics have been one of the biggest knocks on the kid since he was drafted. Typically you don't want to play around too much with a QBs mechanics in season so it makes sense if it's been an offseason adjustment.

If McCarthy thinks he can decrease his release time and increase accuracy with some mechanical tweaks what's the harm? I think you have to look at Lance as playing with house money at this point.
Right. Romo talked about how unready he was mechanically for the pro game before David Lee worked with him. Players get into bad habits that coaches don't worry about too much unless they are unsuccessful with them. Romo may have never developed into a starter if he didn't tweak his mechanics (and he kept tweaking them even after he became a starter).

It is not about him being a threat. He was never going to be threat to Dak from day 1. It is the fact that GM Jethro on his own stupidly, wasted a 4th round pick and $5.3M.

We could have traded last year for a LB.

We could have added Henry this year with that $5.3M.

We could have drafted a RB this year in the 4th round. Then we could have spent the $5.3M on a DT.
I got news for you…..even if Jerry didn’t give away a pick for him, none of those moves you suggested would have happened anyways with the Jones boys at the helm. The pick is gone, what’s done is done and time to move on to see if Lance can progress.

They way over drafted him. No one had the high grades on him SF did. At least one team had a third round grade on him. Jerry said the Cowboys had a second round grade on him. Once the 49ers realized they made a big mistake they wasted no time cutting their losses.

So we would not have drafted a player with the 4th round pick?

Shanahan wanted to stay our and draft Mac Jones. Shanahan believed he only needed an experienced bus driver with the team he had to win a SB.

Lynch wanted a race car driver, who was never in a race before.

It's his first year with the Cowboys and typically that's an offseason type of adjustment not an in season one. That's the downside of trading for a project player that late in the offseason. SF may have tried to make mechanical adjustments, but I don't really know.
Correction. It is his last year with the Cowboys.

It had everything to do with what Trey Lance did with his time while try to earn the 5th year option....Is there any doubt that Jerry Jones would have picked up the option if Lance showed his 2023 season thru 2024 OTAs tenure showed development and progress?

The workout videos showed me Trey Lance was camped out in Britt's office :lmao2:
Wrong.

Do you hear yourself? If the niners knew early on that he was way over his head, they wouldn't have drafted him.... :muttley:

I do trust MM when it comes to taking QB's and helping them. Even though this is his 3rd year in the league, San Fran, I highly doubt, took the time to develop him because of where he was drafted. He was expected to step in and be ready. He never had a chance in San Fran. He now has had the benefit of developing things slowly and lets see where he's at come camp.
