The real story is they already new when they signed Sam Darnold to the $4.5M contract that Trance was going to be QB 3. They had no faith in him backing up Purdy or they never would have invested the $4.5M on a 1 year deal for Darnold. With everything they gave up to get him you would think they would have given him the duration of his contract to come around. You don’t see teams give up any player who they invested a top 5 pick on after only 2 seasons unless there’s a serious off the field issue with the player. Lance may have wanted out but the 49ers invested far too much in him to try and do him a favor. If they saw any hope in him he would still be in SF and they wouldn’t have parted ways with him for only a 4th round pick. No teams saw much hope in him or someone would have given up at least a second rounder. It’s clear the 49ers wanted to get at least something for him.
The Niners new very early that Trance was way over his head.
