McClay fans

OK, but the point remains. Who we have at corner is irrelevant until we fix the front 7.
It wasn't irrelevant against Denver. Elam was a big reason that they gave up the big plays on the ground.

My bad, I thought you were talking about Jerry.

However, I don't think much of McClay either because either he's blown the last few drafts so badly that he deserves to be fired, or Jerry simply doesn't care what he has to say so therefor he is just window dressing serving no real purpose.
I dont think it's been as bad as people are making it out. Bad picks yes completely bad drafts no. Still better drafts than most teams

I'm so glad I decided to not engage with stupid people who don't pay attention to detail.

Is he? Is he the one that picked Mazi/Schooner/Kelvin/Trysten/Jaylon? Is he making decisions or not? Our D sucks due to poor drafting, is he responsible or not?
At the very least as VP of Player Personnel, former Director of Scouting he is researching the talent on the board.

So Will is directly responsible for his research and selections on the board as all in scouting and personnel are regardless if Jethro & Son are making the actual selections.

I promise you those Bozo owners aren’t doing all the research , watching film, etc.

I’ve said for years Will has been receiving entirely too much of a pass . The misses we have had in draft on defense this era is directly responsible for the lack of more success. Not to mention some of the other questionable early round picks like at TE.

Will McClay became VP of player personnel in 2017.

From 2018 to 2024, only two teams, the Lions and Ravens, have produced more Pro Bowl seasons from their drafted players.

From 2018 ton 2024 only the Colts and Ravens have more 1st team All-Pro awards.

In the undrafted free agent market, McClay has produced Pro Bowl kickers and kick returners.

However, he does not have the final say and it would be interesting to discover just how much Jerry deviates from McClay's advice.

As the Dallas Cowboys GM, Jerry Jones is responsible for their draft picks. With that being the case, it was reported in the past that he reviews the candidates in the war room with the staff members chosen to assist in that duty. It's routinely done by way of committee with Jerry having the last word. The player scouts make recommendations, in advance, concerning their preferences.

Also.
What happened to the philosophy ... we will draft football players, and adapt our scheme to what they do best ...
As opposed they used to draft a player and tried to change his play to fit the scheme. (Which did not work).
It's inevitable that football teams have to draft in terms of need, as well as best available player, due to the frequency of player injuries in pro-football and the high cost (monetary, trades) of acquiring even mediocre free agents.

Everyone knows the famous story about everyone in the war room having to convince Jerry that Zack Martin was a much better pick than Johnny Manziel. But hearing it told by Stephen really brings to light who controls that draft. Even when they win the argument, it's frowned upon to go against the King. Hate to say this, but if Stephen wasn't there, our drafts could be even worse. He sounds like the only one who can override dear old dad.

Don't forget though, we can't stop the run because of our CBs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard it right here, it must be true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I think so too.

I think McClay has been bailed out by extremely obvious picks falling into our lap: Martin, Parsons, Lamb, Diggs,Beebe. And then got lucky w/ a couple late rounders in Bland and............well crapp, can't even think of another one.

I started this thread originally to start a convo about McClay. I've never been all that impressed. He was simply better than what we had before, but that doesn't mean he's good.

I see incessant claims of how good McClay is at drafting. Starting this offseason, we will see exactly how good he is. We desperately need D help, and we need it yesterday. So, what's going to happen? More CB's and WR's and TE's?

If he's as good as some claim, then it's time to show it.
Kev, my understanding of what McClay brings to the draft day table is providing in-depth scouting reports to JJ and SJ then they make the actual picks.

No question McClay deserves some scrutiny and accountability. It’s just that he isn’t deciding who to pick and when. He apparently provides round grades and scouting evaluations. In theory, McClay keeps Jerry from playing fantasy football in each draft. Not sure how successful he’s been in that job.

Obviously McClay has overvalued or undervalued some people in previous drafts. But Jerry and Stephen are the ultimate “pickers” of talent in each draft.

That sounds right.

Yes they are. But who is setting the board of players to pick from? Jethro isn’t.
Will has to be doing the research .

Think there’s a reason Will has stayed put in Dallas and not entertained other offers cause he has the perfect situation with no direct accountability.
And the perfect puppet.

Maybe Will helps the situation with Dumb and Dumber but it doesn’t matter.

The end results he should have some responsibility as well and not receive a pass .

Le's just say you're right.... I'll go back to the example name and throw in a couple other names just for good measure..... Will writes down, Mahomes as #1, Rogers as #2, I'll let you pick for #3, Will Grier #4..... As I mentioned Jerry decides to wait til the later rounds to draft a quarterback because it's cheaper when it comes to renewing a contract so he picks Grier..

I'll ask again, Is that Will's fault... Yes he wrote down the names... But as I say time and time again, the final decision is Jerry's. Always has been always will be.... Jerry signs the contracts. Jerry signs the checks.... At the end of the day Jerry is who builds this team... I apologize if you're in denial of reality.....

I didn’t say Jetho wasn’t responsible for making the picks which I believe he is. I’m just saying Will is setting the board, does the research so he’s not completely free of accountability and criticism.
