Mincey holding out

Not mad at him as he easily outplayed his deal and doesn't have a lot of career earnings left in front of him.

All that said his leverage is pretty sparse.
Dallas likely wants to get as many reps for the kids as possible in camp.

We discussed Mincey's holdout in our podcast. Puzzling. He's a 31 year old journeyman, on a team with a director of pro scouting and defensive coordinator that lately have been able to find and get the most out of journeymen.

The team also has a returning Tank Lawrence, highly-rated rookie Randy Gregory, and arguable best in football Greg Hardy at defensive end.

Lastly, by being released, the team can save $1.5M in cap space. A player like Dwight Freeney would surely come in and provide spell duty and take limited snaps for $1.5M, and probably happily.

I don't get it. I think it's a bad holdout.

What podcast?

There seems to be several assumptions involved here. Not so sure you're seeing this accurately but whatever.

Well of course there are assumptions. If we had a statement from the player there would be no discussion about the motives. The man can choose to do whatever he wants to do. If he feels holding out while negotiating for a new deal is the best approach, so be it. But what happens if Dallas refuses to redo his deal? Is he not going to play? He's not getting a long term deal so it's really a play for a quick 2 million dollar bump based on last years play and perceived value. I just don't know that you need to hold out to have that negotiation and doing so may actually work against him in this case if the Cowboys deem the other players as viable replacements, based on their camp performances, for a player who they don't want to extend past this year anyway.

what sucks for Mincy is he missed out on a $500 thousand bonus by 11 snaps last season.

Pay him but give him a year to year performance based option...

Here's an interesting statistic that might open some eyes:

JPP had 38 QB Hurries in 2014. He played 981 Defensive snaps.

Jeremy Mincey had 37 QB Hurries in 2014. He played 724 Defensive snaps.

One of those guys has recently suffered a serious injury and still has an offer of nearly $15 million on the table. Do we really want to cut our player and make him available to that 'other' team over $1 million or so?

That is an interesting statistic...

Though, I am curious how they compare in Sacks, Tackles for loss, tackles period, as well...because hurries are great but having similar numbers in that area doesn't necessarily mean you are getting the same player.

I don't have any quibble about him wanting a raise, frankly, he deserves it. He hasn't got much future left in the NFL, and he played for a very cap friendly amount last year. He doesn't need to get first tier money, just a nice raise, Ala Scandrick

I wouldn't give him a raise.

I would extend his deal for another year (through 2016) for a slightly higher salary and some bonus money that would be paid out now.

In some ways I would use his availability in 2016 as a slight hedge against Crawford leaving as a FA at the end of this season. While I do not see Mincey replacing Crawford as the starting #3 in '16 IF Crawford left, I do see Mincey getting quite a few snaps inside this season on passing downs and I would like to see his versatility to continue through next season.

And the guys a better than average player. Not good, but better than a JAG.

But I doubt very seriously that he is even the 2nd best on the line this year.

Maybe, maybe not. But he's the 2nd best 'proven' player we have there. And at this point, he's the most proven guy we have available for the season.

Heck, even if he's the 3rd best, he's still underpaid.

No, and I'm certainly not claiming anything like that. But hurries definitely make an offense's job more difficult and result in a higher chance of turnovers. It's an important statistic.

I think Pierre-Paul had double the number of sacks at 12. But for half the number of sacks, Mincey is set to make about 1/10th of what the now damaged JPP still could.

That's what I'm advocating. Give him a $1 million payment now and add another year to his deal for the same salary.

yup.........

LDE- Russell Ryan/ D-Law

3T- Crawford/McClain

NT- Hayden/Bishop

RDE-Hardy/Gregory

Let's roll.......:flagwave:

i'm not down on the guy, but he doesn't have leverage, and he has a chance to be part of a special team.

I saw he is the 70th highest paid player out of all DL in NFL

He is a Jim Jeffcoat on the early 1990s teams to me. If that and that may be insulting Jeffcoat.

If he thinks he is otherwise, cut him.

I know he was good lockerroom fellow, but he needs some perspective.

Ridiculous. We have several million in cap space. Bump his salary up this year a half mil or a mil and call it good.

He is a high effort, good lockerroom guy, and believe it or not we need him this year. You can never have too many pass rushers, and players get injured.

Yeah, he deserves a raise.

I agree but then I'm one who feels that player and team last year agreed on this current deal and I think it should be honored. I would not have an issue if the Cowboys extended the contract for an extra year or 2 but money would remain fairly the same. Maybe added incentive bonus

Silly kids.....you want to overpay the stars and cut the grinders.

Mincey signed for peanuts as a spare part. He became a starter; he will begin the season as a starter, and worse case scenerio is he will be a key member of the rotation throughout the season even if a youngster takes his starting gig. Personally, I think Hardy and Mincey are the starters at DE for the long haul with our skinny new kids getting some passing downs. I don't want to see Lawrence or Gregory playing every down at DE this year and certainly not on the goal line. Yes, we are trying to generate a pass rush, but we also need quality starting DE's who don't get eaten up by the run game.

I'm sure he doesn't want huge money, but a raise over the tiny contract he was signed to originally when he is a great fit in our scheme and a starting DE is warranted. They will get him signed, and he does deserve more money. A guy doesn't need double-digit sacks to deserve a raise.

Sounds like it's more about security, not a raise. And the Cowboys don't want to tie up money in future years at his age.

That's fine. I'm sure he wasn't facing the type of blocking that JPP was, though.

He's a JAG, but I'm not going to release him to prove a point, either. He'll show up eventually. Until then, more reps for Gardner & Russell!
