Afternoon Pops and friends. Leon, you have no idea how much you're killing me with the water feature talk. Without pictures, I can imagine all kinds of wonderful. A tile mosaic bottom interspersed with gem like crystals shimmering in the sun. Grooves in the wall or shale like rocks sticking out to give the water something else to do on it's way down. Ceramic pots with exotic plants lining a side of the fountain. A slip and side section for fun. Then curling around to a fire pit. Time to appraise my back yard.

Morning, Pops and all ya all. Well, the weather cooperated. It was beautiful yesterday and I got my slab poured. I'll let it cure for a week before starting to stack the limestone on it. The back is a little tired and sore this morning so today will be a "no manual labor" day.

@ColoCowboy , that is a very tempting offer, especially if the work consists of design and implementing landscape and features. I just don't think my 74 yr. old back can take too much more so I'll have to pass. I hope your intention is to keep it mostly native to the area. Your place sounds beautiful.

@CouchCoach and @Xelda what picture hosting site do you use to post pics? I've tried copy and paste, and using the image insert function using a url on my computer, but nothing has worked for me. Instructions needed! I would love to post some pics although it won't be quite the shangri-la, that Xelda described. Coach, I love creating and this type of work is both therapeutic and satisfying. It fills a need in my life.

News: I've decided to make a more aggressive and promising effort to move out of New York State. It's a real hell hole here. I won't get into politics, but the new law that passed is the icing on the cake. Damn shame too. Western NY is one of the most beautiful places in the country.

I'd never really seen anything but the cities in NY state and like many outsiders, NYC was NY, until I had to drive from Harrisburg PA to Albany and saw some beautiful scenery.

I'm currently near Letchworth State park. It's insanely beautiful. If I'm moving it's most likely going to be Florida or Texas. Something like that.

Just saw an article that had Brownsville as a top 5 retirement choice from an economic standpoint and an hour from South Padre ain't too shabby either. I've only been there once, back in the mid 70's when I started travelling Texas, but I enjoyed seeing all of those citrus trees.

I'm currently near Letchworth State park. It's insanely beautiful. If I'm moving it's most likely going to be Florida or Texas. Something like that.

Watch Florida, the weather can be awful and they've got some species of insects that are only indigenous to that area like No Seeums. The damned things are so small you can't see them and they swarm toward your eyes and drive you inside. Then there's the black flies, they bite and are aggressive and will chase you for a hundred yards. The you've got the python problem and more old people than where I live. They should give some of those old people to the pythons for play toys.

However, neither state has the brutal winters that you've experienced. But if it's politics that's driving you out, I'd stay the hell away from Florida.

Agreed. I've been in most of the contiguous states, and IMO, the Rocky Mountain states are the only ones that compare.

Since the 70s many citrus orchards have been converted to retirement communities and rv resorts to accommodate the winter Texans. The winter Texans are mostly from the northern states and Canada. They come here to escape the harsh winters. Your dollar goes a lot farther around here. Many walk across the border to get dental work and meds. Many decide to make this area their home. Just google winter Texans in the Rio Grande Valley. Lots of activities.
After we dropped off my mom at the adult daycare this morning, my wife and I ate bfast at a local restaurant. We ordered 2 bfast tacos each and a coffee, it cost less than $10. Authentic home made My wife and I have discussed moving back here for good and living in one of the retirement communities but it’s really difficult moving away from the gkiddos. So for now we travel back and forth.

My problem is I moved here running away from something that I thought I could escape with a change of scenery, I didn't run to something. I am not happy here but have doubts I can be happy anywhere else. I do live in a pretty area and the Hill Country is the best part of Texas, imo.

Yeah, baby! We love living in Colorado, if for no other reason than, the shear beauty of the Rockies. I know there are a lot of desirable places to live, work and retire - this area just ticks all the boxes for us.

The biggest downside to Colorado is the influx of newcomers particularly, cashed-up Californians. Like many other places, we've seen a rise in home prices and property taxes and a decided drain on the water resources. Time will tell how it plays out. For now, we couldn't be happier.

@LeonDixson, we are trying our best to preserve the natural forest around our home by planting only native plants. We passed on the putting green front yard and, instead, planted range-land grass - not as pretty, but drought resistant.
