So the start of camp will be about 2 1/2 years since the injury. I'm not a doctor (don't play one on TV either), but it would seem to me that his recovery should be complete, or nearly so. Remember they said the nerve would regenerate, if it was going to, at a rate of about an inch a month, so unless the man's lower leg is 3 feet long, the nerve has had plenty of time to grow back. Of course he would have to get the nerve all the way back to be able to practice fully, so that might be a factor.

I'm just going to wait and see...

That is only half the battle. Once the nerve regenerates to the muscle it has to reinnervate with the muscle. Some of the old interface can be used and others have to be formed anew.

The science behind nerve regeneration is understood extremely well and can be predicted accurately. The study of the biomechanics and biochemistry of reinnervation is still ongoing which leads to uncertainty.

How is it him trying to convince himself instead of him giving an update on how he's feeling? And if he's "obviously" better, why does he need to convince himself? IMO, the reason he probably said something is because his injury is a huge part of his story and would just like to address it by letting fans know that he's back, because some people might not think he's at that level.
DC.com released the video of him making that statement later in the day. It adds context to how he was spurred to make that statement. I'm glad that video was released because, without it, the article left out the questions and just made it sound like he was saying it out of the blue. Like he thought the general public had some doubt about it or was trying to convince himself. Thanks to the video it's clear that is not the case.

If Jaylon completely gets his lateral agility back and he learns to recognize plays quicker( he’s got a great roll model in Lee) he could really help this D this year. Our LB’s have some serious potential to be ELITE as a group.

Calling it now...they will be trend setting. Smith, LVE and Lee... if they all can stay healthy. Will be great to watch.

So we have no idea what would be the anticipated time to get to "full" recovery? How long should we wait? 3 years? 4? 10? That's the question the Cowboys need to answer...

So in other words, your rant was misplaced and you jumped the gun?

Many have taken the position that drafting LVE was a reflection of JS's performance to date (or, some might argue, his lack of performance).

I have a slightly different take. Much like the OL focus, I think the team saw an opportunity in this draft to lay a foundation for a great LB'ing Corp. The LB'ers were exposed last year (and, quite frankly, in previous year's as well) when Lee was out. The departure of Hitchens provided the impetus to draft a LB in the early rounds.

While debatable, I suspect the Cowboys would have drafted a LB in the first 3 rounds even if Smith played to the level we saw at Notre Dame.

Personally, I think drafting LVE goes beyond the debate of whether Smith lives up to expectations. I think the team is clearly preparing for life without Lee. If that is the case, then kudos to the team.

Smith was a unique talent pre-injury, the only question is can he keep improving like he has and become a strong part of the defense
hes only 22 plus hes on the roster either way
this is the year he has to show if he was worth the patience since no brace, healthy and plenty time to learn the defense he wont get the leeway he did so far

the upside is if it does keep getting better, he could play for another 10 years for all we know
maybe not in Dallas but the point is hes still young
younger than some of this years draft picks

What if he's not "reinnervated"? If that's the case, then we can't judge this year either.

Again, how long do the Cowboys wait?
like i said, the brace being off and him being healthy should mean this year
if he doesnt look much improved i suspect you will start getting little soundbites from "unnamed sources"
at least thats the way most teams start devaluing and or cutting ties with a guy

but Jaylon is extremely driven i wouldnt bet against him

Imho, if it doesn't, I'm not wasting a roster spot on him. After over 3 years since the injury, don't care how driven he is, it most likely won't ever fully recover...

I was wrong because the article didn't include the full context of his statement within the larger interview. The video released later in the day was much better at showing all that. I'm done with this.

Jaylon Smith expects to be “better than Notre Dame 100 percent”

No longer in need of an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) brace for drop foot, Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith has no more reminders of his devastating knee injury from two years ago. Instead, he sees only a bright future.

“From the start, people thought I’d never be able to play the game again,” Smith said, via Kate Hairopoulos of the Dallas Morning News. “I’ve been able to accomplish that and each and every day I’ve gotten better. Last year, each game I improved.

“I’m getting there. I’m going to be better than Notre Dame 100 percent. My overall knowledge of the game has improved each and every day, and [I’m physically] going to improve as well.”

Smith’s knee injury in the final game of his Notre Dame career — on New Year’s Day 2016 — severely damaged his peroneal nerve. He sat out all of 2016 in a redshirt season of sorts before playing 16 games with six starts last season while becoming one of the rare NFL players to play with an AFO brace.

He doesn’t expect to need it this season.

“I’m happy,” Smith said. “There’s a great chance that I won’t have to play with it this year. I haven’t wore it since the offseason training began, [and I] want to keep it going.”

Cowboy Jaylon expects to be better than College Jaylon... wow! Imagine that. So what have the Cowboys been getting from him up until now?.... High School Jaylon?

We need to ask ourselves this:

What would Belichick do with a player with never-ending rehab and an extremely high opinion of himself?

First off I absolutely love the guy, great person, and I hope he becomes a dominant force for us at LB.
However, I never saw him as that special of a player at ND honestly. Good sure, great athlete, speedy, but not a taker of blocks and power guy. Just a go find the ball run and hit guy. I never understood the top 10 draft hype about him. So far he’s been utterly terrible with a ton of late season improvement. I’m sure the combo of a major injury plus red shirt year set him back a long ways but based on my impressions of him in college and pros thus far, I’m going to be excited if we can get him up to “good” level at LB from “liability”.
